Song of the Day: Painted Orange - You Walked

Synth-pop is sort of the illegitimate child of alternative rock and disco. Although it’s not obvious, its roots like in experimental forms of music like krautrock and post-punk. As new wave splintered further and further away from punk, and added more and more synthesizers, synth-pop was being birthed. In the mainstream, acts as diverse as Kraftwerk, New Order, and Pet Shop Boys were solidifying the sound. I loved 90s synth-pop, or simply “techno” as we called it then. It was fun and danceable, dark and poppy, all at the same time.… Continued →

Wind Words and Yearling Release 'Splitsville' Split Album

Florida-based Wind Words first made it into the public eye due to his connection to Mark Nicks of Cool Hand Luke fame. And while a couple auxiliary releases have surfaced over the years (including a spoken word project on the minor prophets), this split album is the first full-instrumentation effort we’ve seen from Wind Words since his debut LP in 2017. Joining Wind Words is Yearling, an emo/post-rock project from West Virginia. The three Wind Words tracks were recorded by Brandon Shattuck at Parafonic Studio. You may remember Brandon from Polyvalent or Cora, and both he and Mark Nicks lend their talents on these songs.… Continued →

Rob Ray Releases New Single "Tacky"

Georgia-turned Kentucky-turned Georgia again songwriter Rob Ray has returned with a new album eventually on the horizon. “Tacky” shows his aptitude for blending humor and levity with the substance of faith. In some ways, it’s counter to the deconstruction movement – Ray acknowledges and embraces some of the kitschy qualities of 90s youth group culture but points listeners past this to something far more substantial. “I found things to make me feel better. They never made me feel better,” he notes. Material and easy solutions are not at the heart of enduring faith Musically, this is one of Ray’s strongest offerings yet – upbeat drums, soothing keys and synths, and buttery bass make this an upbeat indie-whatever song that is primed for coffeehouse playlists.… Continued →

Teddy At Night - Stole Your Lover (New Song Out Now)

Yes, Teddy did steal your lover but don’t cry, you have some great music to wipe away those tears and wash those blues away. The artist known as Teddy At Night just dropped his brand new song under the title “Stole Your Lover” (see what I did above?) and it is available through all digital networks and streaming sites now. It’s spicy and drenched in sugar pop, enough that it’ll be stuck in your head for hours. Check out the song below.… Continued →

Song of the Day: The Souls Unrest - Rising

Brace yourself. The Souls Unrest has one of the more complicated histories in all of Christian metal. The roots of the band lie in old school punk band Spudgun, who released one album on Bulletproof Records (a division of Gray Dot). That band got heavier and darker, changing styles so much that a new name was warranted–World Against World. That version of the band also released one album (an amazing album at that) for Bulletproof, before morphing again. A short-lived project called The Orcrist followed, but released no official recordings.… Continued →

Song of the Day: Driver Eight - Cheers

This band was the epitome of one of those all-too-common scenarios in 90s Christian music: the frustratingly great one-album wonder. Driver Eight released Watermelon via Tooth and Nail Records in 1996, to high acclaim from fans and critics alike, and then disappeared into the . . . well, that’s just it–we don’t know what happened! The album featured a highly-effective mix of alternative rock styles including Britpop (even though the band was American), quasi-shoegaze, and jangle pop. It seemed that they were channeling equally such disparate influences as Smashing Pumpkins, Catherine Wheel, R.E.M.,… Continued →

Song of the Day: Corpse Under Construction - Worms of the Underground

Danish experimental grindcore band Corpse Under Construction only recorded 14 tracks in their short existence–and at grindcore tempos and song-lengths, that’s just over 10 minutes of recorded material. They were released on the split CD 4-Way Noise Explosion, which also included Eternal Mystery, Rehumanize, and Long Suffering (2008 on Sewersound Records). What made the band particularly interesting–to me, anyway–was that the band consisted of just 2 members, brothers Martin Svinth on vocals and David Svinth (also of post-hardcore band Magtesløs) on vocals and programming. That’s right, just 2 guys and a drum machine–no ‘real’ instruments.… Continued →

Song of the Day: Dwayne Omarr - Anointed One

We’re digging deep into the archives for this one. For those not familiar with electro-funk, it was an underground genre in the 1980s that bridged electronic dance music and hip-hop. In fact, in many ways it was a predecessor to the proliferation of rap music. The genre was known by a variety of names: electro-funk, techno-funk, and simply electro (not the goth/industrial version from a few decades later). In the mainstream scene, some of the most well-known names were Newcleus, Shannon, Egyptian Lover, Afrika Bambaataa, and some of Midnight Star’s mid-80s material.… Continued →

Get Texted....by IVM

Trying something new and testing a feature out. I have begun an IVM SMS Text List through a company called Simple Texting (via WordPress). Right now you can text the word INDIE to (855) 737-1974 and you’ll be able to join the list. I’ll try to keep it short and simple. Mostly news about IVM site activities and maybe some band news from time to time. Basically, news items we want to push out into the world and onto your screens. This is a trial run so I’ll see how it goes.… Continued →

Nate Parrish to Release New Single "God Knows" (Feat. David Bunton of The Showdown)

I bet you didn’t see that coming did you? Yes sir (or ma’am or whatever), Nate Parrish is BACK and with a vengeance, a most righteous, glorified vengeance of the melodic punk rock n’ roll variety. He is releasing his first new single of 2022 titled “God Knows” which features David Bunton of the great band – The Showdown (Get Snake Bit) lending his vocal talents. You might not know this but David also was a melodic punk band years ago before The Showdown so this pairing is absolutely perfect!… Continued →

Song of the Day: The Warning - Condemned to Hell

If you’ve been around the Christian punk/metal/hardcore/indie scene for any amount of time, you will likely have heard the name Burrito. Not his real name, of course–the man David Villalpando was a legend in the underground scene. Sadly, the man that many called a friend passed away this week from covid-related illness. For those who didn’t know him, it is difficult to overstate his impact on the scene. From a musical standpoint, while none of his projects ever achieved mainstream success or financial prosperity, they were always on the bleeding edge of innovation.… Continued →

David Villalpando ('Burrito') 1960-2022

A legend, long time musician, songwriter, scene supporter, and a Faithful servant of the Lord – David “Burrito” Villalpando, just passed away yesterday. The man who may have been controversial at times for his direct and often times bold, in your face message, was a Faithful servant of the Lord all the way up until the very end. I had chatted with him a few times over the years and followed his social accounts for continuing posts and updates. He had been a part of some very early Christian hardcore, metal, and punk bands during the 80’s like Moral Majority, and The Warning, and went on to start several other bands through the next decade including the band Eightball Cholos, 44Evergiven, and Grace for the Fallen.… Continued →
