Indie Flashback: Blood and Water

A little known independent band by the name of Blood and Water from Nor Cal splashed onto the scene towards the end of the last decade with a few indie releases (one of which can be found here) before signing with upstart new label Eden Records and releasing their label debut “In Character” in 2010. This critically acclaimed and fan adored full length has come to be accepted as one of the finer independent releases of the past decade. It’s incredible how much connects people and this band did just that. Although they didn’t tour much outside of California or top billboard charts, their music certainly won over fans like me and the impact has been felt. With captivating energy, uncompromising passion, and all around good vibes, you can’t help but be mesmerized by the music of Blood and Water. They had this certain likeable quality and a sound not easily replicated. In fact, their genre bending pull on alternative rock music was one of a kind. This music was certainly “commercial” enough to be accepted by the masses but like all good stories this one came to an abrupt halt after just this album (and song ‘Traffic’). While some people embrace the music of Talkie (featuring members of Blood and Water), I’ll forever be connected to this band and pray for a time that these guys will reunite to bless us all with an undeniable good time. Check out some of their music below and reminisce about the time you first discovered this band. Continued →

Thumper Punk Records Comes to An End 2008-2018

David has announced an end to the much loved and adored Christian punk rock label, Thumper Punk Records. He started it as a music site in 2008 and we all watched it grow as a record label the past 10 years. Him and his label will be sorely missed but we commend him for wanting to devote more time to his family. It’s tough in this scene and I know exactly how he feel coming from my perspective. With my experience the past 18 years I can tell you honestly that I have thrown in the towel a few times, wanted to a few more times, and have been battling personal doubts about my work even more times. It isn’t easy managing full time work, family, and trying to keep expenses under control. We all do it out of love for the scene and deeply feel drawn towards sharing our piece of hope with a crowd that isn’t so welcoming these days. That’s the point though, to share in times of darkness, doubt, and disbelief. Anyway, I thank David for the years of support, the years of awesome underground punk rock music with a real message, and for giving these bands a platform when so many others in the “industry” look the other way for more desirable returns on their investments. We all know that’s not the purpose and David is real proof that risk taking is more important than safety. JCHC for life! Read the full statement below and a little teaser by me. Continued →

David Tamaoka (Pennylane) - Ephesians 2:1-10 (Song)

Pennylane guitarist and vocalist – David Tamaoka, has recorded some “solo” music under his own name for the past 10+ years, ever since his band went on an extended hiatus. His studio output has been slim to none as he has worked steadily on building his family and working with his Church there in Hawaii. Well I am excited to reveal that he has finally emerged with some “live” recordings (with more to come hopefully) and you can hear one of them below. There are rumors of a Pennylane “reunion” and a new release but we’ll just leave it at that. Check out the live song based upon Ephesians 2:1-10, below. Continued →

Oh, Eternity Release Brand New Full Length "I Exist"

You all need to give this new release from rising indie pop-rock band Oh, Eternity a chance. It’s an insanely awesome album filled with unforgettable melodies, vocals you can sing along with, and just enough “pop” where it’s not too overbearing. So many influences shine through on this release but if you were to make comparisons I’d say imagine a combination of Academy Is.., Plain White Ts, Edison Glass, Hearts Like Lions, My Epic, and Walk the Moon. It’s a diverse set of songs and an album I’m sure that many of you would welcome into your stereos. Check it out here. The band have released this album via New Vine Records. Continued →
