REVIEW : Katharos - Stay My Captain/Warrior (single)

Katharos is yet another project from Fire (Elgibbor, Fire Throne, Nuclear Blaze) on vocals and guitars, this time with help from drummer Taberah.  There is also some collaboration from former Frost Like Ashes members Sebat and Azahel for live dates. This recording is a single and ‘b-side’ and what we have here is no-frills, raw black metal.  No ‘atmospheric’ or ‘symphonic’ keyboards.  No overdubs or anything of the like.  This could easily pass as a release from the mid-90s Norwegian BM scene.  Appropriately lo-fi with hissed/snarled vocals and trebly guitars, this is great if you like first or second wave black metal.… Continued →

David Tamaoka (Pennylane) - Ephesians 2:1-10 (Song)

Pennylane guitarist and vocalist – David Tamaoka, has recorded some “solo” music under his own name for the past 10+ years, ever since his band went on an extended hiatus. His studio output has been slim to none as he has worked steadily on building his family and working with his Church there in Hawaii. Well I am excited to reveal that he has finally emerged with some “live” recordings (with more to come hopefully) and you can hear one of them below. There are rumors of a Pennylane “reunion” and a new release but we’ll just leave it at that.… Continued →

Oh, Eternity Release Brand New Full Length "I Exist"

You all need to give this new release from rising indie pop-rock band Oh, Eternity a chance. It’s an insanely awesome album filled with unforgettable melodies, vocals you can sing along with, and just enough “pop” where it’s not too overbearing. So many influences shine through on this release but if you were to make comparisons I’d say imagine a combination of Academy Is.., Plain White Ts, Edison Glass, Hearts Like Lions, My Epic, and Walk the Moon. It’s a diverse set of songs and an album I’m sure that many of you would welcome into your stereos.… Continued →

Scene and Unseen: Flyer Art For The Lansing Underground

A really great new book has been released titled “Scene and Unseen: Flyer Art For The Lansing Underground” written by Alex Delavan. The book chronicles the many shows that took place at The Lansing Underground (Michigan) from the late 90’s until 2003 when the venue held their last event. A lot of bands you may recognize as having played this venue as well as a bunch of indie acts that probably should have gotten more notice. I was sent the promotional materials for this wonderful book and from the looks of it, seems to be very well detailed an informative piece of work.… Continued →

REVIEW : The Beckoning - The Desolation of War

Canadian progressive death metallers The Beckoning have been making noise since 2010.  This release combines two earlier demos—Desolate (2014) and War (2012) into one remastered full-length.  Truly progressive, this 4-song clocks in at over 29 minutes, making it either a very long EP, or a full-length with only 4 songs, depending on one’s perspective. While the formula has been done before—screamed/growled vocals + clean/operatic vocals + heavy riffing + melodic leads—it works well here.  Founder/drummer/vocalist Roy Turple pulls off the screamed and clean sung vocals, and when he chooses the latter approach, resembles Jimmy Brown or Eric Clayton. … Continued →

REVIEW : coopertheband - Kingdoms

The press release labelled this as “Indie Folk Rock.”  And while that is mildly accurate, it certainly doesn’t tell you all you need to know.  Full disclosure: I’m a bit of 90s slacker kind of guy.  So indie rock to me means loud guitars, dissonant riffs, punk attitude and band photos that make it look like the members are made up of blind golfers.  Back then, Nirvana had come in and changed all the rules.  Alternative rock had overtaken the airwaves and become mainstream.  Indie rock was an even deeper underground version of alternative. … Continued →

Medic - Wander artwork

Medic Announces Their End...Or Have They?

Indie pop group Medic have announced they will be calling it quits. However, this all follows the group’s move to Nashville and the release of several singles (with hints at even more music). Other bands have made similar announcements before rebranding under a new name and optimists think there’s a chance that may be the case here. However, it’s still too early to tell. In the meantime, the band has cleared out their Facebook page apart from this announcement, which you can view below. Continued →
