Starflyer 59 Return With New Single via Velvet Blue Music

Starflyer 59 have hooked up with Velvet Blue Music again and will release a brand new single titled “This Recliner” on May 14th via the label. This one has that classic sound of their past efforts wrapped up in a warm, smooth package ready to be enjoyed by the masses. This sounds like the perfect continuation of “Young In My Head”, an album released last year on Tooth & Nail Records. I’m so happy to see Jason Martin continuing on with this project and releasing more new music.… Continued →

Left Neglect (Ft. Members of The Merbabies, Roadside Monument, Focused, Pedro the Lion, and Blenderhead)

A worthy new band has arrived on the music scene – Left Neglect and they are garnering the kind of critical acclaim that bands years deep into their careers dream about. This band features members who have played in bands like The Merbabies, Other Desert Cities, Roadside Monument, Focused, Pedro The Lion, and Blenderhead to name a few. What comes immediately to mind on “Children”, the title track off the band’s 6 song Ep is Chris Bowden’s knack for connecting with a listener through a sonic blast of melodic, indie-leaning, sometimes off kilter rock n’ roll.… Continued →

Five EPs From 2019 You Can Download for Free

Streaming is great and all but it’s not for everyone. At least that’s the impression I got last time I wrote about albums you can download for free. So I’ve got five more free EPs that released during 2019 you can add to collection. 1. Roelant – The Narrows This 5-song EP is a contender for my best albums/EPs of 2019. Roelant first crossed my radar in 2015 with their album Music to Change the World but failed to making a lasting impression. That all changed when I heard the lead single “Wrong” from their new EP The Narrows earlier this year (check it out below).… Continued →

Song of the Day: Bloomsday - Tuesday to Thursday

Bloomsday’s debut “The Day the Colors Died” was brilliant, if a little disjointed. The trio ambitiously covered indie rock, shoegaze, jangle pop, slow-core, lo-fi, and emo all in the span of 10 songs. Amazingly, 20+ years later it still holds up. But it was their second release, this time an EP, that really caught listener’s ears and held them in a death grip. It was much more focused this time around–emotionally charged indie rock that somehow managed to merge emo and shoegaze into a singular, cohesive unit that was both of those things and yet neither of them entirely.… Continued →

Song of the Day: Starflyer 59 - Dual Overhead Cam

To commemorate the deluxe vinyl re-issue of Starflyer 59’s legendary sophomore album, Gold, our Song of the Day has to be a pick from that timeless release. The first time I heard this song was also my first time catching the band live. It was the very first Tooth & Nail Weekend at the Where-House in Bartlesville, OK. Also on the bill was Focused, Unashamed, locals Mr Bishop’s Fist (if you know, you know), Wish for Eden (whose van broke down en route so they were unable to join, unfortunately), Chatterbox, and Plankeye.… Continued →

Unwed Sailor release new single (FREE for limited time)

Instrumental indie rock/post-rock supergroup Unwed Sailor have just released a new single, and for a very limited time it’s a “pay what you want” download. The band had this to say about the track: “Gone Jungle is a stand-alone single that we recorded shortly after mixing our latest record, Heavy Age. It’s a nice mid-point between Heavy Age and what’s to come musically from Unwed Sailor.” Download the track here, and throw ’em a buck or two if you can afford it: www.unwedsailor.bandcamp.comContinued →

Song of the Day: Starflyer 59 - We're the Ordinary

Remember “Cooler Than Me” by Mike Posner? That song used to be really cool in 2010 and was popular enough to be played at shopping malls. But maybe, perhaps, you thought yourself cooler than Mike Posner, despite his single having a lot of pizzazz and swagger. Fair enough. Well, I hate to break it to you, but Starflyer 59 is actually cooler than both of you. “We’re the Ordinary,” taken from The Fashion Focus (1998), is cool enough to freeze a hipster shopping mall on a blazing summer’s day.… Continued →

REVIEW : Leem of Earth - Chapter 1, Chapter 2, and Chapter 3

Atmospheric, floating, literary and lush. Leem of Earth has completed their trilogy with the June 7th release of Chapter 3,  the third EP in their belletristic series: Chapter 1, Chapter 2 and Chapter 3. In all three efforts, the band from Pensacola, Florida, creates a fragile wall of sound that hearkens between the fuzz and soundscapes of 90s 4AD shoegaze bands and the ethereal charm of Mazzy Star, The Sundays, Cocteau Twins and The Innocence Mission.

25 years of Starflyer 59! (over a dozen contributors)

As you will no doubt have heard, the mighty Starflyer 59 have just released their 15th full-length studio album (not counting dozens of other releases–EPs, 7″ singles, limited edition vinyl, box sets, live albums, etc.) making them officially the most prolific Chrindie band who ever existed.  Their stellar debut album, officially untitled but affectionately known as “Silver,” also turns 25 years old this year.  You can read the IVM review of their latest “Young in My Head” here.  The 15th album/25-year anniversary seemed too grand an occasion to let pass, so .… Continued →

REVIEW : Starflyer 59 - Young in My Head

Starflyer 59 are back. But, what does even mean when they never went away? Christian indie rock’s most prolific band have just released their 15th full-length album (not counting their 9 EPs, 4 live releases, 3 box sets/collections, numerous vinyl singles and LP variants or compilation appearances—I didn’t even mention the side projects: Pony Express, Bon Voyage, Dance House Children, The Brothers Martin, White Lighter, Neon Horse and Lo-Tom) making them probably the second most prolific band in all of indie rock (second only to Guided by Voices, who are at something like 100 releases).… Continued →

Starflyer 59 Release Upbeat New Song "Young In My Head"

Starflyer 59 drop the title track off the upcoming new full length effort “Young In My Head”, which releases on April 26th through Tooth & Nail Records. The song is an energetic, upbeat jam featuring a driving drum section, slight synth elements, and that classic Jason Martin guitar tone. If you’ve never heard of SF59 and somehow missed out on the past 25 years of legendary music making, give these two new songs a listen then go back and listen to the classics. Are we really calling Starflyer 59 “classic rock” now?… Continued →

Well loved and critically acclaimed 90’s alternative rock band, The Prayer Chain, have come out of retirement to announce a pressing of “Shawl” on vinyl for it’s 25th anniversary and 1 Live show which will take place in California this summer. The band has set a couple of stretch goals which will include another live show (Nashville, TN. in August) and a professional live audio and video recording if they hit $30k. Introducing: Shake It Up

I am introducing you readers to a new ep from Shake It Up. A few of you long time readers may recognize this project because we had posted about various singles in the past. Well Daniel Nothe and his band Shake It Up are back with their debut Ep titled “Everything That Makes You Wonder”. It is a spacey, garage rock type project that would please fans of 90’s bands especially those on Tooth & Nail back in the day. The production is surprisingly on point for an independent group and I am completely captivated by every song start to finish.… Continued →
