Relent has been around and making music longer than most realize; most likely myself included. A 2 song ep in 2016, the Heart Attack ep (2019), the re-release of the Heart Attack ep (2020), with 2 new tracks, and now a full length, aptly titled, “Heavy”. And yes. Yes, it is. Cry Mercy was a groove metal band hailing from Australia signed to Steve Rowe’s record label. I remember hearing them on a compilation put out by Rowe Productions & loved this song. Wonderfully noisy, and delightfully obscure, The Lonely Now only released 3 full-length recordings in their short career: —Captive, 1986, Narrowpath Records (cassette only) —Original Intention, 1987, Narrowpath Records (cassette, LP) —Honest Tear, 1990, Narrowpath/Refuge (cassette only) While all of their releases are somewhat difficult to obtain, ironically their final album–the only one with national distribution through Refuge–is the most difficult. The men of “Boise Boys” are back on HGTV with a brand new show called “Outgrown“. Outgrown is a show essentially about families who have outgrown their current living arrangements and have to expand and/or remodel to make it bigger to suit the families’ growing dynamic. I watched the first episode yesterday and it was really good. Like a mix of Extreme Makeover Home Edition, Hometown, and The Gaines family shows. I think they have a bright future ahead of them. The annual Harvest (Crusade) event is back and is a one day event taking place October 3rd at the Angel Stadium of Anaheim here in sunny Southern California. The event is FREE like always (additional parking fee by the stadium) and will feature music by For King & Country and Phil Wickham plus a message by Greg Laurie. Skillet, have just released their brand new song titled “Surviving The Game” and there is a music video to accompany the track (check it out below). This song continues in that same current Skillet sound tradition and their sound is complimented by high end production as well as musicianship. I really think Jen’s background vocals give this track an extra layer of oomf that further compliments their already classic, rock sound. Swiss band Morgarten are back with a new full-length album, this time on Inner Wound Recordings. The album is called Cry of the Lost and was released in June. While the band still plays in the folk metal genre overall, the new material is heavier than their debut, and features more prominently the elements of black metal and some of the fantasy/epic battle elements of power metal, as evidenced by the accompanying music video. Slight warning: while the band’s lyrics clearly use battle stories to paint an allegorical picture of spiritual warfare and Christian spirituality, there are some moderately graphic fight scenes in the video.… Continued →

Living Fire recently dropped a new ep, titled “Mercy Between Love & Hate”. This release was different than what I was expecting, but a in a really good way. The new ep shows the guys leaning in a much more hard rock/nu metal direction and they pull it off quite well. I’ve given the release a number of listens since it dropped and have yet to find a song I feel the need to skip or that feeling of wearing any of it out, so, to me, this release has great listenability (yes, I just came up with that, shut it, haha) as well as repeatability.… Continued →

Akeldama is a Christian arena rock band that released their self-titled release in 1996. Think Warrior, Blood & Fire, Krush or Laudamus to get a feeling. Anyways, had a really hard time finding their music, but was able to speak with the bassist/vocalist on social media who subsequently sent me a few of their songs. “Akeldama” is actually the Aramaic name for field of blood which is where Judas hung himself after betraying Jesus. Anyways, this song speaks of a girl who is going the wrong direction away from YHWH & the singer is crying out for her to wake up & come back to Jesus.… Continued →
