Song of the Day: Good Saint Nathanael - Making Repairs

Good Saint Nathanael is the alter-ego of Nate Allen (Destroy Nate Allen). Whereas DNA was quirky and sometimes frantic acoustic punk, the saintly version is subdued, still quirky, but much more poignant indie folk. Last year’s Hide No Truth was filled with ardent reflections on life, God’s grace, and themes of spiritual abuse and the need for healing. While the video for “Making Repairs” was filmed last spring, it was only released last week. And it couldn’t be more timely.… Continued →

REVIEW : United Harvest Workers Union - United Harvest Workers Union

Although this was released around Easter of 2019, I only recently stumbled across this gem while perusing the Zap Records page on bandcamp. As it turns out, its history is even deeper than, having been recorded and self-released in 2010. Hailing from Pittsburgh, the band has roots in the punk scene in that area, but UHWU is a completely different animal. The union was formed to create “authentic church music . . . devoid of hype.”… Continued →

REVIEW : Good Saint Nathanael - Hide No Truth

If you’re reading this review, chances are you’re aware of Nate Allen. Released a ton of folk-punk albums with wife Tessa as Destroy Nate Allen. DNA was energetic, fun, and although there was always a message, it was generally focused outward (“Jesus, Keep us Safe from the Cops” and “Boobie Bar” come to mind). Good Saint Nathaniel is Nate’s latest project, a solo outing, in which he turns inward to personal reflection and resolution. And the results are surprisingly good.… Continued →

New 3 Song Acoustic Ep From Jimmy Sisco (Absolved / Platoon 1107)

Today is the release of Jimmy Sisco’s contribution to the 3 Song Acoustic EP series. As the singer/guitarist/songwriter for ABSOLVED and Platoon 1107, Jimmy has released some of the biggest, most aggressive music on Thumper Punk Records. For his 3 Song Acoustic EP, the music is delicate, balanced and soulful, with one track of 70s era folk and two readings of Old Testament scripture over ambient backgrounds. The first song “Son of the Wind” was written by country-western artist Jim Sisco, Sr.,… Continued →
