In the mid- to late-90s when all of the other Christian hardcore bands were doing new school/chugga chugga style hardcore with increasingly metallic influences, Bakersfield’s Chasm were drawing on earlier inspiration. These influences came mostly from the 80s British hardcore punk/d-beat sound (Discharge, Conflict, etc.), although somewhat ironically this track has elements of early black metal in the guitar riffs (a la Venom or Bathory). Nonetheless it’s still filtered through a hardcore punk sound. While Gospel music to most probably represents tradition and preservation, there is also a strong undercurrent of experimentation and the avant garde. Allen Odell released a brand new song titled “Are You Okay?” back in January and it is a magical, beautifully dynamic yet simple, new song. I’m loving the vocals and soft guitar strumming from Allen. This song has some soft beats in the background adding layers to this already great sound. It’s like a mix of Matt Kearney, Jon Foreman, and David Bazan with a little Snow Patrol thrown in (vocally). Wow, what a great band, with such potential! Sadly, Beloved released only one EP (originally for Vindicated from the Deep Water and later re-issued by Solid State) and one full length. That first EP rocked my world. I got to see the band live 2 or 3 times in this era and they were rapidly becoming my favourite emo-core band. So maybe a handful of people actually tuned into the Grammy Awards last night to feel the full brunt of relevance that awards shows have actually turned into (sarcasm). Well surprisingly enough but not really, considering the mass appeal (and star power) coming from one such winner in the “Contemporary Christian Music Album” category at the Grammys last night. WOW!!!! I guess it was sometime last year or maybe the year before I first came across these guys. When I did, the first material I heard of theirs was really heavy hitting stuff, really good, really promising. Then, at some point things seemed to get far more melodic and tame. At the end of 2020 however, the band released a new track called “Your Misery” (see the video below). This track took everything I’d heard from them to this point and blended it PERFECTLY. “Your Misery” has its melodic feel to it, but it also punches you right in the face with how heavy it can get.… Continued →
