Most of you will know that Ronnie Martin has been making music since the late 80s (at least) with Morella’s Forest 1988, Dance House Children, and most famously Joy Electric, not to mention a host of side projects like Ronald of Orange, The Foxglove Hunt, The Brothers Martin, and so forth. While there’s a lot of history with Martin’s expertise in making quirky, electronic pop music, in a sense none of that matters. Not that the history isn’t respectable–but what we really want to know is, is this record going to be good?… Continued →

Song of the Day: Tony Vincent - Must Be the Season

RIP Michael Bloodgood and Kaleb Luebchow
It is unfortunate news I bring you all today. Our music scene just lost two tremendous musicians and faithful servants. Michael Bloodgood who is the namesake and founding member of a legendary heavy metal band called Bloodgood that had quite a few huge albums release during the 80’s that shared Truth and Faith in a very real way through their songs and music. The band made a return about 10 years ago and released the fabulous, epic Christian Metal album “Dangerously Close” in 2013. Michael suffered a hemorrhagic stroke back in February and subsequent brain bleed that followed.… Continued →

Song of the Day: Vaakevandring - Some Day
This Norwegian band formed in 1999, and sadly by 2007 had called it quits. Hailing from Nannestad, just outside Oslo, they played a formed of atmospheric BM that appealed to many who heard them. While their lifespan was short, their impact was huge. You can still read accolades from fans on music-related social media pages, and band members have also been associated with a number of other, more well-known bands including Antestor, Frosthardr, and Grave Declaration.
“Some Day” is taken from their 3-song self-titled demo CD, which was also re-issued a few years later by Momentum Scandinavium with an extra song as Vaakevandring.… Continued →

Song of the Day: Icon For Hire - Cynics vs Critics Vs Get Well
Icon has been on the scene for a few years now. Their first LP released on T&N. I heard of them as I had worked at a TV station in Decatur, IL where they are from. I know they have moved away from their Christian scene, but these songs are still really good. Also check out their latest song Ready For Combat which has landed on mainstream radio.

Song of the Day: Joy Electric - The Cobbler
I’ve been listening to Ronnie Martin’s music since the late 80s, when he and brother Jason (of Starflyer 59 and many others) were known as the duo Dance House Children. That group reveled in synth-pop, but with a super quirky edge. There was nothing in the Christian nor secular markets quite like it. After two underrated albums, the pair split. Jason started the legendary indie rock monster Starflyer 59, while Ronnie carried on with synthesizer-created music in the form of Joy Electric.
Picking up where Dance House Children left off, Joy Electric took the quirkiness to extreme new levels.… Continued →

Becoming The Archetype are on a roll. Not only did they just release a music video for the first single “The Lost Colony” but now they have put out single #2 – “The Remnant” through all digital networks and streaming sites. This absolute beast of a new album is shaping up to not only be the band’s best work but quite possibly one of the best METAL albums of 2022 (disclaimer: it’s possible the word ‘best’ could be outweighed by words like ‘insane’, ‘mind blowing’, ‘smashing’, ‘beast mode’, ‘slapping’, ‘award winning’, ‘critically acclaimed’, or an ‘underrated masterpiece’ and we are not responsible for misrepresenting Becoming The Archetype by undercounting the ferocious nature of said “masterpiece”).… Continued →

Song of the Day: Red - Ordinary World
I remember when this band first started, they were on a rock show hosted by Sonia Vannest. I found out about them & Evanescence on the same show. We all know the directions that the bands took after. This SOTD is in hopes for more Red music. They have done a few covers but this is my fave from them as I loved this song as a kid when it was originally done by Duran Duran.

Best of Psalm 46
This summer my church is doing a sermon series on Psalm 46. It’s something we’ve been doing every summer for the last few years—picking a Psalm and reading through it every week. Naturally as a music lover I enjoy looking to see what artists have made a song based on the Psalm that we’re studying. This year I might have gone a little overboard though. Do you know how many songs titled “Psalm 46” there on Spotify? Yeah, neither do I. As it turns out Spotify’s search function stops at 1,000 songs.… Continued →

Song of the Day: Circle of Birds - Circle of Birds
I haven’t yet featured any post-rock on the Song of the Day series, so it’s time to remedy that. Circle of Birds was a one-off collaboration between members of Ester Drang, Unwed Sailor and Lasso. The vast ensemble (encompassing nine members!) allowed for a true spirit of improvisation. The resulting 3-song EP is entirely instrumental, but it’s a very satisfying listen. Characteristic for the genre, 2 of the 3 songs clock in at over 7 minutes long. Check out the title track here.… Continued →
