There used to be a fairly well-known release formula for SF59. Step one: release full-length album. Step two: release EP of similar material within the following year (or even later that same year). While the formula has been tweaked over the years, it still more or less holds. Whereas She’s the Queen was the counterpart to Silver, Miami functions that way for Young in My Head.… Continued →

Song of the Day: The Prayer Chain - Fifty-Eight
I had this song on my mind the other day as I was thinking about what song I was going to choose for this week. The modus operandi: Ruminate on a song and make a choice. Find it on YouTube. Listen while I’m writing. Dang. I’ve loved this song for years, but was still surprised at how good it sounded more than 2 decades after it was recorded.… Continued →

Song of the Day: Starflyer 59 - Dual Overhead Cam
To commemorate the deluxe vinyl re-issue of Starflyer 59’s legendary sophomore album, Gold, our Song of the Day has to be a pick from that timeless release. Song of the Day: Starflyer 59 - We're the Ordinary
Remember “Cooler Than Me” by Mike Posner? That song used to be really cool in 2010 and was popular enough to be played at shopping malls. But maybe, perhaps, you thought yourself cooler than Mike Posner, despite his single having a lot of pizzazz and swagger. Fair enough. Well, I hate to break it to you, but Starflyer 59 is actually cooler than both of you.… Continued →

The song is an energetic, upbeat jam featuring a driving drum section, slight synth elements, and that classic Jason Martin guitar tone. If you’ve never heard of SF59 and somehow missed out on the past 25 years of legendary music making, give these two new songs a listen then go back and listen to the classics.… Continued →

REVIEW : Lo Tom - Lo Tom
This is a fun record, that’s really easy to listen to. It’s not really ground-breaking, just straight-forward indie rock with really warm guitar tones. While there’s not a lot of distinction between the guitar and bass, for some reason that’s not a bad thing, it just adds to the simplicity.
Most readers probably already realize Lo Tom is basically an indie rock supergroup, featuring: David Bazan (Pedro the Lion, Headphones, solo), TW Walsh (Pedro the Lion, The Soft Drugs, solo), Trey Many (Velour 100, His Name is Alive, Liquorice, TW Walsh), and Jason Martin (Starflyer 59, Bon Voyage, Dance House Children, White Lighter).… Continued →

The Mystery That is Lo Tom
The alt-rock and indie scenes are no stranger to mystery, and Lo Tom is no exception. The band has actually been around for a few years now, but with no recordings, samples, or videos to date, we’ve been wondering what they sound like. Their tunes will no doubt be amazing, as the line-up is none other than Jason Martin (Starflyer 59, White Lighter), David Bazan (Pedro the Lion, Headphones, Overseas), Trey Many (Starflyer 59, Low & Behold, White Lighter, Velour 100), and TW Walsh (Pedro the Lion, The Soft Drugs, and mastering engineer).… Continued →

Best of 2016: Ian DeVaney
2016 was a great year for Christian music, so great in fact that I found it difficult to keep up with all of the releases coming out! These are the albums that I found myself listening to the most over the course of the year though, and after spending a few days listening to the others that I missed, I’m quite comfortable saying that these are the best releases of the year!… Continued →

5 Christian Metal Bands You May Not Have Heard Of (80's/90's Version)
Today, I am posting a list of Christian Metal bands from the old days that aren’t mentioned very often when talking about Christian metal. Most of them tend to be Nu-metal, ironically, even though the 90’s was the time for Nu-Metal/Rapcore.
5. Oficina G3
Oficina G3 is a Christian prog metal act from the late 80’s.… Continued →

REVIEW : Starflyer 59 - Slow
How many artists can you name with 14 studio albums? There probably aren’t too many. Jason Martin, the man behind Starflyer 59, not only has 14 LPs under his cosmic moniker, but he’s also released and contributed to numerous other projects such as Bon Voyage and Neon Horse. His “blue collar” approach to music (as notated in all his albums) has resulted in a prolific 23-year run in the music industry.… Continued →
