Song of the Day: Stavesacre - Gold & Silver

By in News, Video Flashback | 8 Comments

I’m starting a new feature here at IVM that’ll focus on a beautiful, important, and defining song for a particular band. Let’s start this feature off right and put the focus on the music of Stavesacre, particularly the song “Gold & Silver”. I remember 20 years ago hearing this album (Speakeasy) which had this almost “ballad” like track named “Gold & Silver” then being struck in the heart heavily by it’s somber melodies, inspired lyrical delivery, and that unmistakable voice of Mark Salomon. This is beyond just a typical ballad you’d hear in a grocery store, shopping mall, etc. This is simply put, one of the most powerful songs the band has written and something that instantly connected with me. The song has this certain melancholy, a heart on the sleeve, emotional telling of a broken-hearted soul that has found comfort in God and seeks solace from the pain. The song may have been written from the perspective of a musician in our scene but it goes well above that, further showcasing a rock band not afraid to reveal their sensitive side. Stavesacre really hit the right notes on this song and connected with a whole generation who continue to hold this band in high regard. Check out the song below and read the lyrics as well. “Do I see God in all of this. And simply not as strong. It’s just that we’re so small. And feathers made of gold. Strong like wings of silver. To cover all our helpless souls”. Thank you Stavesacre.

You slipped from my arms; I knew you had to go,
Such a heavy heart, who could hope to hold?
And I know where you’re going, and that’s the hardest part,
No matter where tonight ends, you won’t escape your broken heart.

Stay awhile,
Stay awhile,
Stay awhile.

Helpless for the words, and it tightens up the air,
It’s not what you deserve, it’s not for lack of care,
Inside of me is screaming out; I’m praying for my prayers,
Distracting and unworthy of each and every burning tear,
Seems insincere.

Do I see God in all of this?
Maybe, all along, it’s just that we’re so small and simply not as strong,
Strong like wings of silver, and feathers made of gold to carry heavy hearts, to cover all our helpless souls.

To cover all of us.

Under wings of gold and silver, (If it were mine to give)
Sometimes we have to hide, (I’d give you your own time)
For shelter from this bitter winter, (turn it back or forward)
At least tonight. (whatever you decide)
At least tonight,
Under wings of gold and silver, (If it were mine to give)
Sometimes we have to hide, (I’d give you your own time)
For shelter from this bitter winter, (turn it back or forward)
At least tonight. (whatever you decide)
At least tonight.

Stay awhile,
Stay awhile,
Stay awhile.

One of the best ballads of all time. So much emotion, so much depth in the lyrics. Even as a metalhead I can‘t deny the power of this song. Pure art.

Great song from a great band. However, I dunno where that lyric transcription came from, but it’s all messed up, with many lines out of order.

This song will always be one of my favorites. I have so many memories that I made with this song and it’s still inspired and a cut above the rest to this day

One of the best songs off one of the greatest albums ever! Every time I come back to it, Speakeasy still blows my mind. How is it 20? One of the reasons I became a musician.
