Today's Thoughts on Marketing and Social Media by Brandon Jones

Good morning everyone and Happy New Year! Just thought i’d post a little blurb about an alarming “trend” I have seen in recent months. A few artists/bands have hooked up with some marketing firms, more like infomercial style marketing if you are looking for a definition. Anyway, I have been blasted with these ads for whatever reason on Facebook due to my young teenage demographic that I so lovingly belong to. I’m almost 40 going on almost 20, am I right? I have nothing against promoting art/music/products on social media and the web in general, I’ve done it myself for IVM and friends/labels do it for their bands all the time. What I take issue with is this infomercial style barrage of marketing where it sort of amounts to a gimmick. I am not about to attack any one artist (cough cough Manafest cough cough) or call people out for this brand of “hype” but I just wanted to gather everyone’s opinions on this. This does not amount to DIY ethics nor does it promote open and honest dialogue with fans. You can’t “buy” fans or followers on social media. You can “promote” your brand (do we call it that?) and share what you do with people who may have never heard about it but we don’t go beyond that and say “Check out IVM for $49.99 but if you act now we will DOUBLE your offer for same price of $49.99 (you pay shipping and handling). You’ve heard it all before on TV and Radio so let’s leave it out of music. See below for examples of what I’m talking about. Continued →

Pyramid Park - Fall On Me (Audio)

I’ve mentioned the artist known as Pyramid Park late last year and I just wanted to share one of his songs off the most recent full length “Vulnerability”. This worship centered UK based indie artist would fall somewhere between Bastille, Foster The People, We Shot the Moon, Two Door Cinema Club, and even a tad bit of Delirious. Pyramid Park’s refreshing take on faith based indie-alt-rock falls right up there with today’s hottest bands while establishing a road all their own. If you dig great music period then please give Pyramid Park a listen today. You can find “Fall On Me” in audio form, below. Purchase on bandcamp right here. Continued →

Squad 5-0 Begin Working on New Comeback Album, Say What?

With all these new reunions fresh in our minds and the rivers of nostalgia running deep, it was only time before the mighty Squad 5-0 came back and dropped a new album on us. According to the band’s official Instagram page (sorry I’m not aware of any Facebook pages that are current), they may be working on a new album and teased with like 1 second guitar clip. Whether or not this is true remains a mystery much like the band themselves. Let’s hope for one more rockin’ ruckus of a new album. The band last released “Late News Breaking” in 2004. Continued →

The Prayer Chain Announce Vinyl Release of "Shawl" and Live Show

Beloved Southern California 90’s alt-rock band, The Prayer Chain, have just announced a new campaign to fund the vinyl pressing of their much loved debut full length “Shawl”. The band crossed all barriers and industry confines to write songs that conveyed emotions which the general “Christian” market just wasn’t prepared to deal with at the time. Their music transcends all labels and tags that may be associated with the band to truly be recognized as the powerhouse rock act that they were. This and “Mercury” were the band at their finest. They were powerful, pioneering songwriters that were a step above all the rest. Check out the campaign here and let’s push them to that level where we’ll get one chance to see them LIVE again. Rival Choir Calls It Quits

According to the band’s (FKA Mouth of the South) most recent post on Facebook, the band is packing it in, but not before one last hurrah in Denton, TX on January 26th. If you can make it out, I have no doubt it will be well worth checking out to say farewell. Continued →

About Chris DuPont

Chris DuPont is a singer-songwriter from Ann Arbor, MI. who mixes stylistic elements of indie, folk, and ambient.
