REVIEW : Andy Hunter - Presence, Vol. 2
The piano is, like many instruments, simultaneously loved and loathed. The player will tickle the ivories even when others prefer silence. On Presence, Vol. 2 Andy Hunter’s DJ equipment starts to sound strangely similar to a piano. The instrument is present on just about every song, not to mention other orchestral instruments ranging from a pizzicato to a violin. Of course, the electronics are still here, most pronounced in “Light” which has a mid-tempo drum and bass beat, but this album is just as orchestral as it is electronic.… Continued →

REVIEW : Phinehas - Dark Flag
You probably didn’t realize it, but Phinehas has been around for nearly 18 years. Although they only rose from obscurity in 2011 with their debut album Thegodmachine, Phinehas has now put out another reason why they are becoming the giants in the genre.
Freshly signed to Solid State Records, the California metal band puts out their most technical and stunning release to date. Dark Flag is a concept album that doesn’t necessarily tell a story, but follows a theme of struggle in a violent and oppressing regime.… Continued →

Support BrokenFM GoFundMe to Repair and Replace Burnt Equipment from the Nor Cal Fires
Please support my friends Tim Hopkins and Chris Kuhner in getting the incredible independent Christian alt-rock station BrokenFM back up on the air. I absolutely love this station and support their efforts at putting positive, hopeful music out there in the world. BrokenFM lost their transmitting towers/equipment. BrokenFM has been kind to IVM recently in playing tracks from some of our artists both on air and through internet streaming. It’s a tragedy what happened back a month or two ago with those fires up North.… Continued →

Dystopian Futures - "Fear" Now Available via ZAP Records
ZAP Records has just released this new 3 song ep from eccentric noise-punk band called Dystopian Futures. It’s like some strange mix of Blenderhead “Muchacho Vivo” (album), Fugazi, The Locust, Sonic Youth, Frodus, Don’t Know, Showbread, Roadside Monument, and kazoo punk rock (seriously!). Through all the noise and advant-garde weirdness, there is this strange punk rock calling to my soul. I’m not usually a fan of the extremely indie noise punk stuff, not knocking it just stating that it doesn’t necessarily end up in playlists but I’m feeling the music here.… Continued →
