Song of the Day: Starflyer 59 - We're the Ordinary

Remember “Cooler Than Me” by Mike Posner? That song used to be really cool in 2010 and was popular enough to be played at shopping malls. But maybe, perhaps, you thought yourself cooler than Mike Posner, despite his single having a lot of pizzazz and swagger. Fair enough. Well, I hate to break it to you, but Starflyer 59 is actually cooler than both of you. “We’re the Ordinary,” taken from The Fashion Focus (1998), is cool enough to freeze a hipster shopping mall on a blazing summer’s day.… Continued →

Introducing: AsFireFalls

Dont ask how I came to find these guys, because the truth is, I still have no idea. Nevertheless there were certain things said if them that drew my interest and I was happy it did. AsFireFalls is a hard rock/techno/metal band from Boise, Idaho. The 4-piece is currently independent, but strike me as the type that could get snapped up by a fortunate label out there somewhere. So, look em up on Facebook, spotify, amazon, Instagram…whichever social media site we’re all clamoring off to these days and follow em.… Continued →

Pathway Music - King of Glory

This past May, Jason Dunn (Aid & Effect, former Hawk Nelson) accepted a position at Pathway Church as their music director. The first song from Pathway Music, called “King of Glory”, released just a few days ago. Check it out below and leave your thoughts!… Continued →

Song of the Day: Benjamin Hamilton - heartbroken.

I’m going to be honest, I don’t really know anything about Benjamin Hamilton, I just stumbled across “heartbroken.” while I was searching for new music on Spotify this weekend. I saw that The Good Christian Music Blog had playlisted some of his previous songs and figured it was worth checking out and threw his new single into my playlist. Well, it ended up being one of those songs where every time it would come up in shuffle I would have to stop what I’m doing and pull out my phone to see what I was listening to.… Continued →

Mainsail - Blue Skies (Official Music Video)

Don’t sleep on this new music video from one of the fastest rising pop-punk bands in our scene. Mainsail are back with a brand new music video for their new song “Blue Skies” and it’s a total winner. As much as this is a throwback to that early 00’s sound there enough newness to keep you on your toes and entertained throughout the entire length of song. This is a good one folks and a band that’ll be huge in no time at all.… Continued →

Release Recap - July 2019: Rock & Metal Edition

Last night I decided I would skip my regularly scheduled Song of the Day post in favor of a monthly recap post. As it turns out though rock is far from dead and my recap post end up being entirely rock and metal releases. Ain’t nothing wrong with that right!? The month started off a pair of new singles from Sweden. After 8 years of silence, Blindside returned with a new song titled “Gravedigger” and Narnia dropped their second single off their upcoming album From Darkness to Light due out August 2nd.… Continued →

Song of the Day: The Devil Wears Prada - My Questions

I became a fan of The Devil Wears Prada in 2011. There were many reasons for this: peer pressure via a friend, the positive review in HM Magazine, and Dan Seagrave’s dark and mysterious artwork. Dead Throne made me realize what I’d been missing out on. It’s near impossible to choose a favourite song from a near perfect album, but in my iTunes library, “My Questions” has the most plays. To my knowledge, the band has never played this song live, but the mesmerizing guitar work and depressing bridge echo in my head often.… Continued →

NF - Leave Me Alone

NF released his fourth studio album, The Search, this past Friday. Track two, “Leave Me Alone,” now has a music video which you can view below. The song focuses on the artist’s personal psychology; particularly, how it relates to his career in the music industry.… Continued →

REVIEW : Skillet - Victorious

I got my first taste of Skillet in the early 2000’s just after I came to know the Lord. I was drawn to their raw, gritty, heavy sound because, musically, I heard some similarities to Marilyn Manson, a band I’d been a tremendous fan of in my B.C. days. As the years went by, as is to be expected, the band’s sound changed a bit, mellowing here and there, adding string sections, adding electronic sounds (or at least making them a bit more prominent), having a much more produced sound, songs that are more radio friendly…the list goes on.… Continued →

Song of the Day: Altar Boys - You Are Loved

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: this is one of the greatest songs our scene has ever produced! It gets straight to the heart of what it’s all about: “Hey I’m talkin’ to you/Yeah, I’m trying to get through/God cares about you more than think . . . You are loved! You are loved!” It was the first song I ever heard from the Altar Boys, in the late 80s. Ironically, it was on a metal compilation where I first heard them. Though the song is nowhere near metal, it has that late 80s post-punk/power pop sound from SoCal that has loads of energy.… Continued →

REVIEW : Wolves at the Gate - Eclipse

Coming off of their undeniably best album to date, Wolves at the Gate is back with their fourth release. Eclipse begins with “The Cure,” which was the first single released for the album. Already, lyrics are beaming from the album. “I can taste the misery, spitting out the remedy. All I’ve been through, all that I’ve seen, these eyes, this heart still can’t dispel the lies.” The opening song serves as what to expect for the rest of the album in respect to the lyrical tone.… Continued →

REVIEW : United Harvest Workers Union - United Harvest Workers Union

Although this was released around Easter of 2019, I only recently stumbled across this gem while perusing the Zap Records page on bandcamp. As it turns out, its history is even deeper than, having been recorded and self-released in 2010. Hailing from Pittsburgh, the band has roots in the punk scene in that area, but UHWU is a completely different animal. The union was formed to create “authentic church music . . . devoid of hype.” So I guess you could call this a worship band, but it’s not what you think.… Continued →

REVIEW : A.Duff - One Life

A-Duff is no Calvin Harris; and coming from me, that’s quite a compliment. Well, at least my perception of Calvin Harris – I’ve never really given him a fair listen. In any case, there’s enough cheese-ball EDM in the world to go around. Some of A-Duff’s material could be on the radio (e.g. “God is Real”), but he clearly values creativity. Opening track “Don’t Stop Believing” kicks things off with an optimistic mood and some groovy brass, while “Block Rocking Flammable” reminds me of playing SSX 3 on PS2.… Continued →

Song of the Day: Shane Newville - Roll Out

Remember Syntax Records, the label that put out awesome underground hip-hop like RedCloud, the Night Owls compilations, and Sackcloth Fashion? Well, sometimes the label released music from other genres, too. This included rock bands like Green Olive Tree and Olivia the Band, and on other occasions, electronic music. Today I’d like to share a song from Formless (2007) by Shane Newville, titled “Roll Out.” It is seven minutes of D&B bliss and perfect for an epic high speed car chase, should you find yourself in such a predicament.… Continued →

We Are Voices

Song of the Day: We Are Voices - Disappear

No one really knows what happened to We Are Voices apart from their 2017 take on “O Come, O Come Emmanuel”. Prior to that, the band was set to release a series of smaller releases over the course of the year. Sadly, this plan didn’t make it past the first iteration, titled Year I. The band’s site is still active which seems promising, but maybe if we make enough noise they’ll put out some new songs? Continued →
