While it might feel like it was just the other night we celebrated stopping into 2026, the fact of the matter is that we’re now halfway through the year. So let’s take a look back at some of the albums that dropped during the first half of the year. I’m going to TRY to refrain from offering opinions at this point and just give descriptions. Floodlit is a band from Los Angeles that covers a wide swath of all types of aggressive and heavy music and does so exceptionally well. If you’ve yet to check them out, you’re in for a treat. The debut 10 track release really comes out swinging and is based on the singer’s time spent living in Myanmar and the conflict that has been ongoing in the region for some time. North Carolina's own pop-punk band by the name of Splitcast are back with a killer new album out this year called "Day/Night" which is actually both of their new EPs put together on one complete album. These guys play fast, furious, sometimes metallic, and altogether poppy, punk rock music. Their lead off single on the album is called "2000's Pop Punk (Jimmy Ate The World)" and it's everything you love about this genre. Solid tongue in cheek lyrical mastery mixed with a heavy dose of nostalgia and reminiscing about youthful days of the past which if you're anything like me, seems like ages ago. These songs are so darn catchy and they go hard. I haven't been so impressed by a new punk rock album in quite a while (well I'm actually lying because new stuff from Super Sometimes, The Paradox, New Found Glory, Light The Way, Brave Days, Protect Your Heart, Jason Dunn, Nate Parrish, etc is just perfect summer tunes). The songs are filled to the brim with fast beats, positive and hopeful messaging, meaningful tunes about life, love, and fatherhood (When She Finds You). These guys kind of remind me of a a mix between American Hi-Fi, SR-71, Sugarcult, Ten Foot Pole, Chaser, Hawk Nelson, No Use for a Name, MUTE, and Millencolin. All the greatest guitar solos, fast punk drumming, slow ballads, and loads of harmonies. Even "Worthy of the Calling" has some heavy digging with some deep guttural screams. Splitcast are the biggest sounding band you've never heard. They have solid chops worthy of any major radio/streaming airplay and I hope we will be a seeing a lot more of them in the next year to come. Splitcast "Day/Night" out now on People of Punk Rock Records and I give it a solid 5 out 5! Catch the band at the Breaking Darkness Music Festival on August 1st!

Metalcore band, Then It Ends, have dropped a new track, “Alone”. The song acknowledges the inward battle many of us face, but reminds us that through it all, we’re never alone. The track comes at you from all angles, featuring heavy riffs, a good range of screams, and a melodic chorus with some great sounding clean vocals. Somewhere around a year and a half ago, Sevendust guitarist Clint Lowery came to a place of faith in Christ. Since then, he’s been vocal about his newfound faith, encouraging others and sharing the hope we have in Jesus. A new band that I’m not sure has gotten much coverage by IVM (my apologies) but is entirely worthy of exposure is… HOPE DEFERRED. The band are releasing their debut full length titled “Darkness Remains” next week. The band is comprised with members of Embodyment and The Showdown including Showdown lead vocalist David Bunton who also fronts this new band. Check out their new song “Brethren of Blood”, below! Demon Hunter have released one of their most gut punching, emotionally raw and spiritually connective albums to date. To say it’s a timely release is an understatement. There is just something truly special and remarkable about this album. Maybe it’s the grief connection, something I think many of us in this country and across the world really are feeling in light of the death of an influential young Christian and activist, Charlie Kirk.
