Song of the Day: Scott Blackwell - Day by Day

Scott Blackwell was a well-connected producer and DJ who brought house music to CCM, and played a huge role in the advent of Christian-themed electronic dance music. He founded N*Soul Records and later Myx Records, both of which saw releases in subgenres like house, techno, rave, breaks, and more. Besides his important roles in the Christian music industry, he’s also worked with mainstream artists as diverse as Joe Diffie (country), Debbie Gibson (pop/top 40), Book of Love (synth-pop), The Gap Band (funk). Song of the Day: The Echoing Green - Defend Your Joy

This synth-pop powerhouse hailed from New Mexico, and was spearheaded by Joey Belville. They debuted in 1994 with a light, upbeat, joyful and relatively simplistic take on synth-pop with the aptly-titled Defend Your Joy. Produced by Ronnie Martin (Joy Electric, etc.), the album oozed of positivity and an almost naive optimism. And yet, it never came off as cheesy, disingenuous, or otherwise off-putting. In fact, I think the title track is a great song to kick off a new year with. Song of the Day: Jyradelix - Out for Love

For a brief moment in the early 1990s, it looked like electronica (or techno, or rave as it was being called at the time) was going to take over popular music. It had a huge following in Christian alternative music for a good two years.
