30 Of My Favorite Albums From 1996

This is my 30th anniversary tribute to albums that released during the year of 1996 (and/or presumed to have released during this particular year). It was a monumental year in underground, indie music and one that was ignited by artists sharing a similar Christian Faith (not all the below listed albums are "Christian" releases but they are some of my favorites from that year). While the rest of the world was consuming their Michael W Smith, or Newsboys***, Audio Adrenaline, DC Talk***, Amy Grant, Rebecca St. James, Jars of Clay, becoming panheads, or even that guy who wrote the Butterfly Kisses song, we on the indie circuit side of things were rejoicing with a newfound optimism. Our passions ran deep and our association with Christianity was nearly unshakeable. This year, that decade, was a fire starter, a year of immense joy and unforeseen challenges. Without diving too deep into the undercurrent of what was and what may have been, let's just take a look back on some of my favorites. These are some of the songs blasted from the comfort of the old Teal green Camaro in 1996 (or that Blue Chevy truck). (***These artists haven't aged the greatest, sorry, not sorry).

Song of the Day: Pushstart Wagon - Affection

This quirky alternative rock band has members that are still in the music industry after all these years. I had this one on CD back in high school. The opener (no pun intended) Open was pretty popular on Christian rock charts. This SOTD reminds me of what happens when we remove God’s intended plan for love. And be sure to check out my website www.castingsuchathinshadow.com and my pre-recorded radio show on Ripper Radio aired on Sundays 5-6 pm EST. Continued →

Song of the Day: The Faith - Outshined

This rarity hit Christian rock charts in 1996 per an e-book I recently bought that covers Christian rock radio from 1983 until 2002 when the chart first started. It has become my pastime to review all the music that has evolved into what we have today. I had never heard of this band and the music imho is unmemorable. From my search, it looks like the record label only released 2 projects with the other being an AC artist. This SOTD is the one that went to radio & reminds of the quirky bands that Christian rock had to offer in the late 90s/early 2000s.… Continued →
