Silage was an alternative rock band from Grass Valley, CA. Their debut album, Watusi featured an upbeat blend of power pop, pop-punk and even ska. The band focused on silly, fun lyrics that were rooted in Christian faith but proved that they never took themselves too seriously. The album was filled with songs about the temptations of road rage (“My Car Makes Me Sin”), our culture’s obsession with celebrities (“Drop Some Names”), and relatedly–our own tendencies to want to fit in, as the title track “Watusi” suggests: And I go on and live my life and Hide away From you and you or me Or whoever wants to believe What I am singing and No I don’t wanna be this way Or see this way Or believe in my intention to be cool While some critics might argue there wasn’t much substance behind the band, in a very literal sense, the joke is on them.… Continued →

Forming first as Spud Puddle, this band from southern California changed their name just prior to the release of their second album. Partly due to confusion with punk band Spudgun, but more so due to a change in styles–away from the pop-punk of their debut, and into alternative/indie rock on the self-titled Quaylealbum, the old band name just didn’t fit anymore. With a sound that touched on alternative rock, power pop, and just a hint of emo, Quayle wowed listeners with a sound that was both raw and melodic at the same time.… Continued →

So a new friend or acquaintance finds out you’re into music. The inevitable question follows: “what kind of music do you like?” How honest are you? Do you simply say, “I like a little bit of everything?” You know that’s not true. You can’t stand Matchbox 20. Do you try something a little more honest, but still generic, like, “mostly rock stuff.” No, that won’t work either–they might think you mean Lynyrd Skynyrd. Or are you blatantly honest with them, knowing they are unlikely to have a clue what you mean: “my favorite genre is probably shoegaze.”… Continued →
