Band: Sleeping at last

CD title: Keep No score.

Review by Kyle (as the fall breaks)

Sleeping at lasts newest CD, which came out in the summer, is a very emotional record. I don’t mean emotional in a cheesy way. This was done right. The band has produced 3 full length cds, one of which was released on Interscope records (their previous CD “Ghosts” was on Interscope).

While I had heard Sleeping at lasts music (I got “Ghosts” a year or so ago) I wasn’t very big on their music. I mean sure they wrote music that was good but for some reason, it needed more for me. After “ghosts”, Sleeping at last dropped their major label support and became an independent band again. Even though the band no longer had a label backing them, they decided to write a record. That record is “Keep No Score” which is their best work yet.

The CD kicks in with violins and then changes to a soft guitar line and the singer’s great vocals. Then they add the full band with violins included. This sets the tone for the record, in which 8 out of the 12 tracks feature violin accompaniment. Sleeping At Last has soft songs and some rockier songs, but what really did it for were the added violins and the lyrics. The songs can stand well on their own because the singer’s voice is quite amazing. However, the violins add another layer to the music and give it a very nice touch to the overall excellent music.  The lyrics talk about heaven and what we are truly made for in this life. This is the best thing Sleeping At Last has made. It has made me a fan of a band that I thought wasn’t that good(which is a shame I thought that before). It has made me want to go back to their previous works. Check out this CD. Its one of the best CD’s of 2006.

9/10

Here’s a quote from Ryan (the lead singer) -“Our appreciation and passion for songwriting becomes so much greater with each record”.
They proved that with this CD.

Lyrics from “Needle and thread”:

When the world welcomes us in,
We’re closer to Heaven than we’ll ever know.
They say this place has changed,
But strip away all of the technology
And you will see
That we all are hunters,
Hunting for something that will make us okay.

Here we lay alone in hospital beds,
Tracing life in our heads;
But all that is left
Is that this was our entrance and now it’s our exit,
As we find our way home.

All the blood and all the sweat
That we invested to be loved
Follows us into our end,
Where we begin to understand

That we are made of love,
And all the beauty stemming from it.
We are made of love,
And every fracture caused by the lack of it.

“You were a million years of work,”
Said God and His angels, with needle and thread.

They kissed your head and said,
“You’re a good kid and you make us proud.
So just give your best and the rest will come,
And we’ll see you soon.”

All the blood and all the sweat
That we invested to be loved
Follows us into our end,
Where we begin to understand

That maybe Hollywood was right:
When the credits have rolled and the tears have dried,
The answers that we have been dying to find
Are all pieced together and, somehow,
Made perfectly mine.

We are made of love,
And all the beauty stemming from it.
We are made of love,
And every fracture caused by the lack of it.
