Four Years of Writing for IVM: A Reflection

By in News | 2 Comments

Unbeknownst to me, apart from a Facebook post, I’ve been writing for IVM for four years now. That’s long enough to get a college degree, or a Master’s. And in some ways, that time feels like a drop in the bucket. In other ways, it has been stressful, tense, uncertain, even insurmountable at times.

But in the midst of that, there have been pockets of joy, wonder, and passion. I got to tour with American Arson. I’ve had reviews shared by Facedown Records. I’ve covered bands that got big; elsewhere, I helped put a few artists on the map. None of this is to brag. In fact, it’s all very humbling that I have an outlet for my writing and I’ve made some friends from fans and bands alike in the process. I don’t take any of this lightly.

But as a volunteer strapped for time, it’s frankly easy to feel this doesn’t have an impact. Some posts get very little engagement. Sometimes the writing process is second-nature to life, and it’s a struggle to push through.

All that said, I’m grateful again for the experience here. It’s been an interesting four years (and really, shouldn’t this year alone count for several?), and I’m eager to hopefully continue to be involved here.

I’m well aware I typically write thousand-word reviews but this will be short. If you have any questions for me or anything you’d want to let me know, I’d love to hear from you.

Congrats on four years! I’ve always appreciated your writing here, I think it was your review of Whale Bones a few years back that caught my eye and I’ve been keeping my eye on your posts since then
