Song of the Day: Andy Hunter - Radiate

You might be familiar with a couple of Andy Hunter’s songs. “Go” and “The Wonders of You” have been featured in video games and movies like SSX 3, Need for Speed Underground, and The Italian Job. However, 2002s Exodus is far from a one-hit wonder; every song on the album is brilliant. Today I’d like to share a personal favourite, “Radiate”. While the song clocks in at over eight minutes, it does not drag on at all. Ultimately, it’s an encouraging meditation on Christ’s life which lives in us and through us.… Continued →

Song of the Day: Smoke - Saylavee

Emo is not limited to rock; it can be hip-hop, too. Here is a song from an album that has remained far under the radar – even for underground hip-hop – since its release in 2006. Smoke is a member of Oldominion, a Northwest collective with over 20 members. While Oldominion are outside the margins of Christian music, Smoke’s solo release Bleed is more Christocentric in its lyrics. “Saylavee” focuses around those difficult thoughts and feelings that are inevitable in human life; the lyrics are dense and the sound is wistful.… Continued →

REVIEW : Chris Bernstorf - It's All Joy

Chris Bernstorf is the poetic equivalent to a bowl of jelly beans. Well, unless you study those jelly bean guides, but that’s beside the point. Opening track “Swing” lives up to its name, offering a dizzying array of topics from water parks, to The Mentalist, to online classes, all pointing to the theme of overcoming personal vices. That probably sounds random – which it is – but that’s precisely what works for It’s All Joy: the negative “without rhyme or reason” is turned into a positive.… Continued →

Reading is Listening and Listening is Reading

I’ve enjoyed listening to music much longer than I’ve enjoyed reading books. Reading has only been an interest of mine for the past five years, especially subjects like philosophy, religion, and sociology. What I’ve found through reading books, though, is that it complements listening to music. The relation between books and music in terms of their content, especially lyrically, is undeniable. Even musically, there seems to be room for reading to influence listening, with pictures derived from words being transformed into pictures derived from sound. We end up with snapshots of the sublime and we meditate on them time and time again.… Continued →

Brinson Announces New Album

On Friday, April 26, Brinson will be releasing his new album Reversing Tomorrow. No stranger to the hip-hop scene, this will be his 9th solo project; his first album, Escaping Me, was released in 2008. The press release includes some more information about the sound and lyrics: The song “Aqua Drip” taps into both the author’s affinity for comic book culture and the superhero mythology of the Marine Marvel. Its trap-heavy track blends an ocean’s worth of water references into a believer’s anthem about the confidence the Holy Spirit brings to one’s identity.… Continued →

Rawsrvnt - Get Away

Rawsrvnt just released a video for “Get Away,” an introspective song that focuses on being discontent with one’s immediate surroundings. The press release reads: The lyrics to “Get Away” find the singer (who is currently in the process of a divorce) speaking directly to his former spouse, his heavenly father, and himself. The words express disappointment, bewilderment, dependence, and still… hope. “It was important that my videographer Joel Davis (aka Geek formally of the group Surf Gvng) captured some smiles amidst the sadness,” Rawsrvnt said. “It’s been a difficult season for sure, but I know my Savior is still right by my side.”… Continued →

REVIEW : Heath McNease - Be Clean Again

Be Clean Again feels like a Sunday. The weather is somber, you’re feeling introspective, and everything just seems rather slow. Very little of Heath McNease’s latest effort (save for “Believe”) could be deemed upbeat from a musical or lyrical standpoint. This album is 54 minutes of slow hip-hop meets folk, never lacking in sincerity or seriousness. While McNease is most proficient at handling this task – being the guitar playing and singing, yet thought provoking rapper, that he is – Be Clean Again made my eyes (and heart) feel a shade heavy.… Continued →

James Gardin to release "Sweet Jesus" this Friday

James Gardin will be releasing a new EP on Friday – so make sure to sport your floral shirt if you have one! Sweet Jesus will be available on all digital retailers, but on Illect’s bandcamp the instrumentals are also included. It’s looking to be a grand ol’ time with Gardin and his posse. Here’s some more information from the press release: Sweet Jesus! By no means is that anyone taking the Lord’s name in vain. Think of it as more of a proclamation of excitement and expectation of the brand new EP by Illect’s James Gardin.… Continued →

REVIEW : The Drowned God - I'll Always Be the Same

I’ll Always Be the Same is a tiring listen. For an album that focuses on negative thoughts and emotions, the lyrics really accentuate the music. Human psychology is paradoxical in the sense that even when emotions and thoughts seem to repeat themselves, they can never actually be the same qualitatively, since they occur at different points in time. The music of The Drowned God is an effigy of consciousness, for the song structures are entirely unpredictable, even when there is repetition at either the lyrical or musical level.… Continued →

Die-Rek Signs to Illect Recordings

Toronto-based hip-hop artist, Die-Rek, has signed with Illect Recordings. He has been a staple in Canada’s underground scene, so be sure to check out his past work on bandcamp. The emcee and producer had the following to say about the signing: There’s a lot of legacy on this label. Tunnel Rats, L.A. Symphony, Scribbling Idiots, Lojique, Phat K.A.T.S. and Deepspace 5. These are household names that will live on in the culture, and that’s the aspiration.  It sets a standard for me and puts a confirmation in my heart that I’m in the right place.… Continued →
