Best of 2023: Rob Jensen

1. Lacey Sturm – Kenotic Metanoia: This November Lacey Sturm released her first album in nearly 8 years. To say it was worth the wait is an understatement. If it’s going to take 8 years to release a new album, this is the caliber release you want to shoot for. Lacey sounds as good as ever and has dropped an exceptional album here. It easily outshines her previous release, Life Screams, and is, in my opinion, her best work to date, including her material with Flyleaf.… Continued →

Introducing Spiritwalker (mini album review included)

Wage War. DTGL-era Underoath. Confide. These are but a few of the names that readily spring to mind when I listen to Spiritwalker’s debut release, “Heretic”, which dropped this past July. The independent release is extremely well written and well produced, easily standing shoulder to shoulder with other well-known bands of the genre that have been at it for years. The project, based out of Asheville, NC, is the sole effort of one man, Brandon Marlowe.   The album is unashamedly direct about matters of faith, touching largely on where our hope and purpose lies, expressing the frivolity of seeking such things here and focusing our gaze to God, where we’re found in the fulness of all these things.… Continued →

Nu metal band Relent has released their newest offering, “World War Me” on Rockfest Records. New Collington Track, "Fighting For Me"

Collington began writing and performing while attending college. What began as a batch of self-produced demos has grown into Collington working with producers such as Eric Owyoung (Hillsong United/ John Foreman) and Bill Scheniman (Bruce Springsteen/ Mick Jagger). Major press took notice of the 2020 release “Against The Wall” and Collington was awarded “Next Big Thing” by NewReleaseToday.   Fast forward to the present, Collington has enlisted producer and former Sanctus Real member Jake Rye for his next release. Working in Rye’s Adrian, MI studio, the collaboration has yielded a song collection that portrays a new found intimacy for Collington’s music.… Continued →

Song of the Day: Subseven - Emotion

Subseven was a rock (some say emo/screamo) band from Oklahoma that signed with Flicker Records in 2003. The band would release “Subseven: The Ep” and the full length “Free to Conquer” before calling it a day in 2005. This Song of the Day, “Emotion”, hits hard and fast with a chorus sure to stay in your head all day. Don’t miss it!… Continued →

REVIEW : Wage War - Manic

Wage War hit the metalcore scene with a ferocity in 2015 with the release of their debut album, “Blueprints”. Prior to this, they were known as Empires and had an ep called “The Fall of Kings” which is quite impressive! The first two albums, “Blueprints” and “Deadweight” were very well received by fans of the genre, however the third, “Pressure”, which was released a little over 2yrs ago, had something of a mixed reception. While ardent fans of the band’s previous material thought they were getting too poppy or mellowing out, others applauded some of the new directions the band was branching out to.… Continued →

REVIEW : Relent - Heavy

Relent has been around and making music longer than most realize; most likely myself included. A 2 song ep in 2016, the Heart Attack ep (2019), the re-release of the Heart Attack ep (2020), with 2 new tracks, and now a full length, aptly titled, “Heavy”. And yes. Yes, it is. From the first listen to these guys a number of yrs ago, I was hooked. I’m a sucker for downtuned guitars with well constructed grooves, thunderous drums, and a mix of rapped/sung/screamed vocals. So this band has really checked all the boxes for me since day 1.… Continued →
