James Koan III Releases Long-Awaited "Overthinker"

Multi-talented singer-songwriter and Porchlight network member James Koan III has finally released “Overthinker” after several years of fine-tuning the track. This time around, Renew the Arts partnered with Still Small Sound to bring this final version of the song to life. Even though the song has existed in a “live” format for some time now, Koan was committed to his artistic vision for this complete form of the track.

Lyrically, the song is in line with its title; it abounds with common questions of saying the wrong thing in a conversation or accidentally leaving the oven on. There’s a playful surface to it, augmented by Koan’s pseudo-musical piano chops. But beneath it all, he speaks not just to general awkwardness but to the larger social shift of a post-social world – one which thrives off social media, remote work, and food delivery services. How do we communicate? What about when neither part knows how to navigate the gap? Are we actually weird, or are we living in a weird version of the world? Maybe I too am an overthinker. Maybe you are, too. But you won’t need to overthink to recognize Koan has once again delivered on all fronts with this song.
