REVIEW : Take / The Forerunner - The Beginning of Sorrows

This split LP is a vinyl release featuring two hardcore/metalcore bands from Las Vegas. It appears from the photos that both bands also share some members. One of the first things you’ll notice about this 12” is the provocative cover art and exquisite packaging. Liner notes are printed on a full 12” booklet with glossy printing. It’s very similar to the booklets that have traditionally come inside CD packaging, except this is like 4 times the size. I don’t know if this is becoming a trend in vinyl packaging, but I’ve never seen anything quite this extensive.… Continued →

Pipe Bomb Releases Mind Bending, Explosive Debut EP "Stomp"

Chaotic, and heavy, this one man project known as “Pipe Bomb”, just dropped the explosive (no pun intended) debut many of us have been waiting for. The 6 song ep titled “Stomp” is out now on all digital networks and streaming sites. It’s tough to describe this project and it’s one of those things you just have to listen to and draw your own conclusions. It can’t be summarized into a nifty little “review” that as they are, can be quite subjective. This is heavy and chaotic and if you listen, any traits of a typical “one man band” kind of sentiment will wear off quite quick.… Continued →

Lightworker Shows Us All How Heavy and Melodic Can Intertwine With Expertise

Lightworker return with their first new song in several years. The song is titled “First Light” and it’ll be appearing on the band’s new album “How The Beautiful Decay” which is out April 19th on Solid State Records. Imagine a Howard Jones led Killswitch Engage crossing paths with For Today, Phinehas, and Bleeding Through but even more spectacular. This band shows real promise and potential and I can’t wait to hear what album number 2 sounds like. Check out the music video for the song right here at IVM, below.… Continued →

Song of the Day: Archetype's Collide - My Own Device vs Fade Away (After Hours)

This crossover band’s sound totally reminds me of Wage War. I really like them as their vocalist is actually the creative director at his church. Check out these lyrics from another of their earlier songs. Follow this band as they are doing big things. I’ll shout Your name, for You alone are King. And I’ll sing Your praise, ’cause You reign in me. Though I stumble and stray from the path, You never cease to love me with open hands. Though I may falter, You never alter.… Continued →

Song of the Day: System Failure - Cry To Heaven

This “metal/hxc core” band hits hard. I first heard about them through a darn good comp called Battle of the Bands released by Rugged Records back in ’99. Appears they were from Nebraska & disbanded in 2003. They stood out from other bands as the bass guitar stands out & you can understand the vocalist mostly. Check em out.  I have also added live distorted footage from another great song of theirs called All Is Silent. Akissforjersey are back!

AKFJ is a post hardcore/metalcore band that hasn’t released much new music since 2014 until now! You might remember them for Oh, Infamous City or II that I saw working their way around “Christian” metal radio shows back in the day. A video was also made for War from their 2014 release New Bodies. Check out this new one & also their prior discography along with their reimagined work. Continued →

Song of the Day: Cast in Stone - You Can't Hold Me Back

Cast in Stone was a hardcore band from California, who recorded their first cassette demo in 1998. Their early material was that old school meets new school subgenre sometimes called “tough guy hardcore.” It’s no surprise then that some of the members also did stints in Sleeping Giant, xDEATHSTARx, mainstream Bleeding Through, Point of Recognition and hardcore supergroup Dodgin’ Bullets. They recorded an EP for indie Warfare Records in 2000, a 3-way split release with Point of Recognition and Torn in Two for Facedown in 2001, and then a final cassette demo in 2001.… Continued →

Introducing Spiritwalker (mini album review included)

Wage War. DTGL-era Underoath. Confide. These are but a few of the names that readily spring to mind when I listen to Spiritwalker’s debut release, “Heretic”, which dropped this past July. The independent release is extremely well written and well produced, easily standing shoulder to shoulder with other well-known bands of the genre that have been at it for years. The project, based out of Asheville, NC, is the sole effort of one man, Brandon Marlowe.   The album is unashamedly direct about matters of faith, touching largely on where our hope and purpose lies, expressing the frivolity of seeking such things here and focusing our gaze to God, where we’re found in the fulness of all these things.… Continued →

The Rumors Are True Podcast

We don’t often ‘advertise’ or publicize other industry platforms, but in this case it’s appropriate. The Rumors Are True is a podcast that focuses heavily on the Christian indie/punk/alternative/whatever scene. Hosted by scene veteran Jeremy Alan Gould, the show has featured conversations with individuals connected to Exeter Flud, twothirtyeight, The Throes, Living Sacrifice, Norma Jean, Fine China, and the list goes on and on. Check it out on your favorite streaming platform, or follow one of the links here: The Rumors Are True PodcastContinued →

Song of the Day: Chalice - Lacerate

This band released one devastatingly heavy album in 1999 for indie upstart Takehold Records, and then like so many other metalcore bands, disappeared after only one album and one split (with fellow-Floridians Set Apart) never to be heard from again. A few members turned up elsewhere–some in the mysterious metal band Yeti, while drummer Nathan Warshowsky served as a studio drum tech for artists as diverse as Forever Changed, Underoath, Day of Fire, and even Paramore. Deathmask Grin came out just as metalcore as a genre was really taking off, and it was a significant contribution to the genre musically, despite it being heard by so few people.… Continued →
