We Shot The Moon is a piano driven indie rock band from California. For those of you who are not familiar with them, they are a result of Waking Ashland breaking up. The lead singer, Jonathon Jones, was encouraged by a member of Sherwood actually, to start playing music and again and We Shot The Moon was formed.

Out of this comes a nicely crafted piano driven album full of songs that range in content. From the happy pop-rocker “The Brightside” to the ballad-like “Amy” which is about a girl that WSTM met on tour.  There are some great hooks in the songs, especially the softer indie-rocker “Candles”. There are some parts in it that actually remind me of a worship song that I can’t seem to place.

The album is, as I said, very diverse in content. There is a song that is distinctly different than the others titled “Red Night”. It is a more of a rocker and lacks the distinct piano and guitars from the rest of the album. It says, “If this world should end tonight, I’ll be by your side”. It is pretty much God telling us that no matter what happens and when we are in our desperate hour, he will come to our side. “In Good Time” is a song about love. It talks about a girl and basically how much love means to her saying, “Her friends all married young…”, give it a listen tell me what you think.

The album seems like it will end slow, with softer beginnings for most of the songs, but “Amarillo” actually turns into a pretty happy song saying “we’re gonna make it”. It does have more of a mellow sound compared to the rest of A Silver Lining but is just as good. “Amy” is a softer song though and is the only song that specifically mentions God saying “God break the spell”.

“Candles” starts off with very happy sounding keyboards but breaks into another good, but mellow indie pop-rocker. It actually progresses through and ends up with some nice work on the electric guitar. This song is probably one of my favorites and proves that mellow can still be good. Be sure to check out A Silver Lining!

Overall:

We Shot The Moon releases their sophomore effort and is another band who isn’t affected by the dreaded sophomore slump. Heavily piano driven, this band has a bring future ahead of them. You should at least check out A Silver Lining and leave your thoughts.
