mewithoutYou Announces the End

By in News | 8 Comments

Sad news today, as legendary band mewithoutYou has announced on their Facebook page that the following year will be their final one as an active band.

Their message reads, “To whom it may concern, we have decided on next year as our last as an active band. We nevertheless have many plans in the interim, the details of which are forthcoming. Thank you, mewithoutYou”

We’ll all have to be in the lookout to see what they have planned. If you haven’t experienced their live show, I strongly recommend trying to see them before it’s over.

Unless band members actively hate each other, in this day and age, there’s no point in breaking up. Hope this just means they are changing their status to “hiatus.” I saw them a couple months ago, and they were as great as ever. No reason to put the guitars down. Even if it means they have to quit touring consistently or only put out albums sporadically.
Get together and record every few years. Play a few shows when or if it’s financially feasible. Stay together.

I totally agree with you. Look at Five Iron, Mxpx, Slick Shoes, and numerous other bands who don’t “tour” anymore. They just do spot dates and the occasional new album. A hiatus would suit them better. I’m not a big mwy fan but I do see they’ve had a immense impact on people and their music resonates with an entire generation. I think they’ve had a tremendous run and if you count The Operation, a long time in music. Maybe the guys are going in different directions musically and want a fresh start?

Right on. Those are some of the exact bands I was thinking of. Look at Slick Shoes right now, planning their first full length in 17 years!
The exceptions would be a band like Embodyment, where the singer just straight-up said, “I’m done with music,” and moved on to another career to never touch music again. Then again, if one day he woke up with the itch, I bet the other three guys would be up for it!

Extremely talented band, and an incredible band live. Will miss them.

I half agree with all of y’all. Why should a band quit in today’s musical climate? Producing music is cheap and easy and you can release it on streaming platforms and make some income without leaving your home. You can do less than 5 shows a year, fill venues and sell a ton of merch. Easy. But. I also hate that. It is almost like a refusal to move on and grow. It overpopulates an industry that upcoming bands struggle to enter, suffocating the breath of fresh air these new bands could bring. Often the new albums these semi-retired bands… Read more »

I used to love MeWithoutYou, but I haven’t really listened to their stuff since Brother, Sister. I’m sad to hear they’re breaking up, so I’m glad I finally get to see them on the upcoming Thrice “Vheissu” tour.
