So I’ve been thinking of the current state we’re living in and couldn’t help but be reminded of Horatio Spafford the author of It Is Well With My Soul.
Did you know that he wrote this hymn after pretty traumatic events in his life? First his four year old son passed away, then he suffered a great financial loss in the great Chicago fire of 1871 as most of his property in that area was damaged. His finances suffered more due to an economic downturn 2 years later.
He then was to embark on a family trip to Europe but was delayed due to business, so he sent his family ahead. In doing so, the ship his family was on collided with another sea vessel and rapidly sank. All four of Horatio’s daughters died. His wife was the only one who survived to inform him of the tragedy. After all these incidences in his life, Horatio was comforted by the peace that only Christ can give and was inspired to write this timeless hymn.
I’ve chosen three different renditions by three different artists that I personally feel have done this song justice for their genres respectively.
I’ve given you this history to meditate on and ask yourself, with everything going on, with what seems like the world falling apart around you, do you have the peace only Christ can give to say it is well with my soul?
