5 Up and Coming Christian Metal Bands

By in Articles | 6 Comments

Today, I’m doing something a little different. These bands are bands that people should know and that are on the rise. Check them out! And here you go!

5. Saints Can Lie

Metalcore acts have become very common in the United States. But Saints Can Lie seem to be doing something sort of fresh. The band formed in 2012 with the original lineup of brothers Vocalist Jake and Guitarist/Pianist Hunter Shaw, Guitarist John McDonough and Drummer Bryce Garland. The band comes from Texas, home to many amazing metal bands including Pantera and The Famine. On April 26, 2013, John, as well as Jake and Hunter, got into a car accident. John died that day, but the Shaw brothers survived. To this day, the band has memorialized him permanently on their Facebook page. The band is independent and has released an album titled Trial & Tribulation.

4. Death Therapy

Guitarless. That’s one word to describe Death Therapy, the Christian industrial groove metal band. The solo project of Jason Wisdom, the powerhouse that has been apart of Becoming the Archetype and Solamors. Death Therapy has been at it for about a year now, officially. It’s only Wisdom with assistance from a drummer and quote “The most important member of the band, the iPad”. The band seems to getting their name out there, the band’s first tour with Project 86 certainly helped. Wisdom has recently signed to Solid State Records with the project and their debut album is set to be released in February 2017.

3. What We Do in Secret

The Christian mathcore/chaotic metal scene has been pretty dry, since bands like The Chariot disbanded. What We Do in Secret seems to be leading the revival of that side of things. The band formed in 2012 in Tennessee. The band has gained some notice, working with Fit for a King’s Bobby Lynge, and even having former FFAK member, Aaron Kadura play guitar briefly. The band has released two EPs, New Eyes and The Migration and are working on a full-length, titled Love | Chaos. The band consists of Vocalist Josh Adams, Guitarist Clay Crenshaw, Bassist Drew Nance and Drummer Devin Harris.

2. Abated Mass of Flesh

Abated Mass of Flesh, like What We Do in Secret, are Tennessee natives that formed in 2011. But unlike WWDIS, Abated Mass of Flesh plays Christian slamming brutal deathcore/grindcore/deathgrind. The whole subgenre thing goes a little far stretched with these guys. Just say Extreme death metal and it’s good. Anyways, the band formed in 2011 as a solo project of Zach Plunkett. Zach later hired on his brother Matt (Vocals), and his friend Logan Hayworth (Bass). Zach later met Kade Dodson (Drums) early the next year. Kade and Logan both left in 2014, and were replaced by Riley Wingate and Max Tubville, and also added on second guitarist Thomas Wingate. The band has recorded five EPs and live EP and a studio album, with another, titled Lacerated, on the way.

1. Death Requisite

In the last few years, the Florida metal scene has flourished with great bands. One of those bands, is Death Requisite. DR formed in 1999 in Sarasota, Florida, home to the famous band Atheist, (who will be mentioned in a little bit), with Lead Guitarist Dave Blackmore, a.k.a. Dave Requisite. The band went on hiatus in 2005, but reformed in 2010 with a new lineup. The band recorded two EPs, Prophets of Doom and Second Death, before two of the four piece quit. The band’s lineup currently consists of Blackmore, longtime drummer William Lee, Vocalist Vincent St. James, and Guitarist Joseph Moria. The band’s bassist position has been a revolving situation as of recent. Regnal the Just (RTJ), the band’s most recent bassist, seems to have been replaced by Blackmore’s son, Gabriel. The band just released Revisitation via Rottweiler Records on November 25, 2016. The band has received notable quotes from bands such as Atheist (brought it back around!) and Broken Flesh and A Hill to Die Upon.

What are you unsure about with regards to Wage War? Whether they’re up and coming? Whether they’re Christian?

Like Jeremy said, their lyrics make it pretty clear where they stand.

In terms of up and coming? They’ve sold a good bit of records, and I’m expecting their next album to be huge, so I maybe wouldn’t call them up and coming.

In fairness to Mason, I had the same thought/concern. It’s why I mentioned having asked them directly.

I really like WWDIS, more than I usually do the “chaotic” stuff. I couldn’t be more excited for Death Therapy, plus as an added bonus my wife likes it a lot as well!
Wage War is an honourable mention? My favorite album this year, so excited for the next one! They are really exciting live as well. I spoke with the drummer and they are all believers (you can see it in some the lyrics to).

Touching backstory, but I couldn’t get into Saints Can Lie. The harsh vocalist is good, and the backflip just after 2 minutes is fantastic. Death Therapy is awesome, the song reminds me of a very heavy Rival Factions era P86. I can’t not bounce along to these songs. Such groove. Plus his vocals are ferocious. I liked What We Do In Secret a lot more than I expected to. I’ll be watching for them in the future I’m so glad Abated Mass of Flesh had a lyric video. I wouldn’t catch more than three words otherwise. That’s a big breakdown… Read more »
