Goodnight Caulfield - The Masquerade

Posted by Eric On December - 31 - 2008

Artist: Goodnight Caulfield
Album: The Masquerade
Label: None (released independently)
Release Date: January 3, 2009
Review by: Eric Pettersson

Tracklist:
1. All You’ve Got
2. C.S. Why
3. The Prowl
4. Blue Room
5. The Departure
6. Goin’ Nowhere Fast
7. You Don’t Love Me Anyone
8. Hearts
9. Far from Fiction
10. Angels in Disguise
11. Without a Sound
12. Sleepwalk

It’s been a number of years now since the fall of emo. The music itself still exists under its new name, indie-rock, but the old word has become something to be avoided. We still crank up the volume for The Almost and Paramore, but we are very reluctant to say emo, because it’s developed a bit of a bad stigma. Emo is lame.

But then the roaring guitars of “All You’ve Got” come pouring in with strong but smooth clean vocals reminiscent of The Early November, and I remember why I used to love emo. Because that’s what this music is, emo, and it’s good. Real good. Sure, close to half the songs deal with the bitter pain of a breakup, and their lyrics can come across as desperate and whiney, but I’m sure they’re not so bad for people who can relate to phrases like “You don’t love me anymore,” and “Do you even care at all?” Other songs like “Blue Room” end up sounding more like Mae (circa Destination: Beautiful) by adding a piano lace and softer vocals. Dual guitars on the intro to “The Departure” could almost be metal, but Goodnight Caulfield avoid ever taking their music into screamo territory. The acoustic “Hearts” is a perfect fit in the middle of the album to keep things from getting too repetitive, and it is also one of the best songs on here.

Strong from start to finish, The Masquerade packs a hard-hitting emo-rock punch that this reviewer hasn’t felt since he first bought Anberlin’s debut. Everything is tight. The music is thought-out, and the guitars are never boring. Vocally, singer Adam Caudra delivers in a way that is fitting and memorable, even if the lyrics annoy me once in a while. Unfortunately, despite the creativity and excellent musicianship, a lot of the songs end up blurring together by the end with no obvious stand-outs. It’s all good stuff, but nothing really sets the songs apart aside from the acoustic “Hearts.” Even so, this is a bright debut for a band with great potential for the future.

Hands Album Coming February 24th

Posted by Brandon On December - 31 - 2008

Don’t forget everyone that the band HANDS has their new album “The Sounds of Earth” dropping on February 24th through Oort/Lobster Records. Yes, they are on Facedown but they were previously signed with Oort Records for a one album deal which is why “The Sounds of Earth” is being released in February on the Oort label. The band is hitting the studio in April to record their Facedown Records debut to release in July. Yeaaaahhhh booooyyyyyy, TWO full length albums in one year from this amazing band called HANDS. Check them out if you get a chance, they are going on tour in the new year and they’ll be at Facedown Fest here in Southern California in April. Just to show how much I love/support this band, I bought a Tshirt and Hoodie from the Facedown Store for Hands. I encourage you to do the same.

Situation With IVM Site

Posted by Brandon On December - 31 - 2008

Hello everyone, this is Brandon Jones. I just wanted to drop you a line to say thank you for visiting the new and improved Indie Vision Music. As you can see, the site is in a state of construction and is still being worked on by Nate and myself. Nate went on vacation a few days ago and he hasn’t had internet so that’s why many of your messages have gone unanswered. He will return soon and answer all inquiries. We are well aware that many elements of the site still are not functioning correctly and there is a obvious misspelling of the “Visit the Store” button. I also wanted to let you know that in order to see and click on links in posts, you have to click the “Read More” button. I am trying to get that changed so that links will appear in the news box on the main page without having to “read more”. Or some of you saavy internet users will just use our feed function or bookmark the “news” page so that you can read all the news articles with LINKS in them. I am also trying to get at least 30 news posts to show up on the main page like we used to have and maybe a column on the right side of the site with pictures of the albums for our reviews. We need an easier to read “reviews” section with links on the main page, I am well aware of that. If Tyler and his Christian Music Zine site can have pictures of the albums that are being reviewed then we can too.

So just keep in mind, this is very much a work in progress and all of your questions, suggestions, and general concerns will be answered shortly. Thanks to all of you readers for your continued support and friendship, and thank you staff for your dedication.

Goodnight Caulfield - The Masquerade

Posted by Tyler.H On December - 31 - 2008

Artist: Goodnight Caulfield

Album: The Masquerade

Reviewer: Tyler Hess

This album reminds me of why we’re in the business. As much as I love bands that everyone else and their mama know about that tour around the world and are loved by millions, there is always that local scene (which through the internet isn’t totally local) where indie bands perform in their area as they grow a local fan base and expand. Through sites like this we help bands like Goodnight Caulfield get the word out about their music and get them attention from labels and such (hopefully). Maybe the songs aren’t perfect, maybe the production isn’t all there, but there are songs and albums out there that maybe none of your friends know about, but you wouldn’t give them up for the world.

Goodnight Caulfield, whom you may recognize from our latest compilation, “A Very Indie Christmas”, resides and plays just south of me in San Diego. Between S. D. and Los Angeles and even the Bay area up north, California has a ton of Christian artists making the circuits, but how many people know that? Not enough.

So, now that I’ve talked about everything but the music, Goodnight Caulfield has come out with a surprisingly good album, though I think they might have benefited more from cutting this twelve track album down to a five song ep, they must have wanted to get all their songs out to their fans. There are several very good pop rock songs on this album that are memorable without being annoying. However, for every song that sticks out, there is another song that can be glazed over. There aren’t any bad songs that I wish would just die, but there are several that are too easy to ignore, hence the suggestion that this be cut down and shipped out, but my advice is never asked for, is it?

Lyrically, I’m impressed with how many different subjects they are willing to approach. Nothing seems to be off topic, as they attack thoughts of faith, unbelief, sin and temptation and more, with well constructed choruses.

Indie Vision’s Top 20 List of 2008

Posted by Brandon On December - 30 - 2008

I have a project for you. Count up the top 20 albums people posted in this thread and in our forums here. Tally up the Top 20 albums everyone seemed to agree that were their favorites. I will then take the Top 20 albums everyone agreed on was their favorites and put them in a poll on the main page. You can either post the Top 20 in the comments of this post or in an email to me: brandon@indievisionmusic.com. An example would be if more than one person put Brave Saint Saturn in their list, then that band would be part of the final Top 20 and so on. If you have any questions, just drop them in the comments. Thanks everyone!

Incrave

Posted by Brandon On December - 29 - 2008

Incrave

INCRAVE was formed early 2001 under the name Evergrace in the Swedish town of Edsbyn, by six individuals on a singular mission to create quality Heavy Metal. It didn’t take long for them to find their own sound, however, they have been compared to bands such as Tad Morose, Nocturnal Rites, Morgana Lefay and Dream Evil.

During their first years, they played many shows in Sweden, and after singer Johan Falk returned from one year of vocal studies in Huskvarna, the band decided it was time to start working on their debut album. The album was written and recorded during 2006.

A deal was inked with Ulterium Records Sweden, and September 2006 marked the release of the band’s self-titled debut album, which instantly got very good reactions from media and the metal audience all over the world. The coming year saw the band touring venues all over Sweden, and also visits to Norway and Switzerland was included. In February 2007, Evergrace decided to change their name, and in April the debut album was re-released under the new band name, INCRAVE, and with the album title being changed to, “The Escape”.

Summer 2007 INCRAVE once again entered Studio EVG in Edsbyn Sweden, to record the follow-up to “The Escape.” This time out, the album was mixed and mastered by Per Ryberg [Morgana Lefay, Tad Morose, Bloodbound] at Studio Soundcreation, and the artwork was painted by Kristian Wåhlin [At The Gates, Emperor, Therion]. The name of the new album is “Dead End.”

While INCRAVE is a young band, with an average age of 22, on this outing, there’s a maturity and refinement in terms of song writing, performance, and production that exceeds their age. With an album such as “Dead End,” INCRAVE looks forward to the future, and their entering into the world-stage with forthcoming touring, and overall world domination.
