Brian “Head” Welch’s Response

Posted by bloodwater On October - 1 - 2008

A number of Christian retail stores have pulled Brian “Head” Welch’s new album off of their shelves because of certain content in his video for the song Flush.  You can read his response here.  What do you think about this situation?  (bandsonfire.com)

  1. Dan Said,

i have to agree that the video is a bit much. i understand his point of view but i think he could have used better symbolism, or at least more clothed.

  2. Garrett Said,

I think that the video was a bit too graphic. I’m sure he meant it to be, but at the same time I just don’t think it’s right.

Yea….I understand what he is talking about and agree, but then I watched the video…and….there are much better ways to get across what you say than that I think…its just a too much I think

In our society, image is more important than substance, so a video that acknowledges reality will get guff for doing so. If mainstream Christianity were to acknowledge the meth problem, hell would freeze over.

  6. Jon Said,

i think he can do a video however he wants, and the christian stores can make a decision on their own. I think the shots with the models are somewhat sexual but they moved quickly and the black junk all over them helps to distract. It is a lot less sexual than most music videos out there but also more sexual and graphic than “normal” christian videos. would you rather see secular rapper videos with girls wearing almost nothing dancing for the whole video in slow motion or see this on mtv? I would much rather have this on the mainstream video channels than most of what is out there…

  7. fusse Said,

there’s a lot good stuff in what he is saying, yep. but then again the video has content that should have been left off. i don’t think it does anyone any good to see what we see in the video. some of it should have been left off. i can’t think of any good reason to justify the content as there are definitely many many kids who will see the video and not sure if all the scenes communicate exactly what they intent to… i could go on for very long but we better pray this video will do more good than bad and most of all for Brian to keep on shining Jesus the way God leads him to.

when it comes to pulling the cd from the stores, I can understand. i’m not sure how many kids who buy this cd from christian stores are the exact target group brian wants to reach with his music anyway? i dont know.

  8. Jon Said,

I agree that im not sure that the content itself gets across the symbolism and meanings he intended when he planned the video.

  10. Dan Said,

if i’m a parent, i don’t want to have to worry about my 13 year old watching christian music videos because there are half naked girls licking each other. think of a better way to get your point across, or at the very least, put some clothes on the girls.

Honestly, I was pretty shocked by what I saw. I’m disappointed a bit too. I mean he can do what he wants, but saying that you were trying to be “real” doesn’t justify putting the audience through the sexual images it had, which is my main problem. The person watching (and this is mainly for the guys) are going to think about those hot girls and what they are doing, more than the idea of quitting drugs.

    Wow, intense video.
I can really see both sides of the argument, and I hope this thing opens some eyes to the reality of addiction. I can understand how people might find the clip offensive, but I think that his reasons are legitimate.

  13. KT1 Said,

I think you guys have missed the point. I dont think christians are his intened audience. He made his album to reach the lost, those who still have a worldly mentality. Although conservative christians might get offended, s grest deal of people will think the video is alright. oh well, I guess Brian would say die religion die.

  14. (a different) Dan Said,

I think Head’s message is something christians need to hear as much as non-christians. I think the models dressed like that could have been done better but I don’t mind it because I think it’s something that will draw attraction from mainstream media. I just wish christians wouldn’t be so uptight, if the models weren’t doing that people would still complain about how it’s too graphic because it talks about drugs and if he’s a christian drugs shouldn’t be in his music. Gosh I’m sick of christians who flip out because somebody actually makes music about something other than the typical christian stuff that is sucked dry by way too many artists. Way to go Brian for not being fake

  15. charles burcher Said,

I think this video was not intended to be watched by Christians as much as it is designed to reach out to the lost and suffering. I do understand how it may shock fellow Christians, especially those who did not go through what Head did before they were saved. I attended a meeting where Head was the featured speaker recently, and 30 people gave their life to Christ. You will know them by their fruits, and Head sure produced good fruit that night. I think the Lord is using him to reach those who are hesitant to set foot in a church. I found Head to be very sincere and full of compassion in his own special way. Please give him a chance. I think he would give you one.
