    As Cities Burn interview

Decoymusic.com did an interview with Colin Kimble who plays bass in As Cities Burn. You can check out the interview right here. I’d be interested to hear your thoughts on what he said in this interview. One part that stuck out to me was “Instead of trying to come up with a Christian version of everything, Christians need to just get in the world and try to be a part of what’s going on instead of creating a bubble of safety within a Christian music market.” What do you think?

he was referring to the music when he said that.

I was happy to see Colin answer that question truthfully. I totally agree with what he had to say. To this day I still see so many bands label themselves only as “christian”. Why? Why would you seclude yourself from an audience of others?

I agree with what Chris said. I think that it’s great that more bands that know Christ are being seen in the secular music scene. It’s great that we have bands that glorify God and everything and I think in general the church needs there to be SOME bands that are considered “Christian bands” bands that are mainly only listened to by the church, and it’s not necessarily something they would try to do, but would happen naturally because the world isn’t too interested in giving God glory in case you haven’t noticed. So I think the bands that are intent on glorifying God can come from all different genres, not necessarily what many would categorize as worship. Worship seems to have become a genre in itself, which I thnk is wrong. But my long, drawn out point is that I think a larger number of bands need to know Christ, yet be presented in the secular world so instead of “preaching to the choir” after the show they can make an impact on the kids who come by to say “what’s up?” after the show. Just to be a witness for Christ even if it isn’t in what they say. Sorry for the long drawn out comment, but I couldn’t think of a way to say it well briefly and still I’m not sure I said it entirely right, LOL.

we don’t really know his heart. he may have said it out of pressure. but still, i agree wit his words.

That is why I do not like the term “Christian band”. Christians should make excellent art (I’m not just talking about music) and present it to the world. On top of that, they should focus on leading people to Christ with a great message that is not talking down to the audience.

    6. ChrisC | September 30th, 2007 | 6:56 am

Out of pressure? It was done via an email. I don’t think he was pressured at all into saying that. I let him answer the questions the way he wanted.

    7. Quincy | September 30th, 2007 | 7:20 am

      I agree with him.

However, there’s a lot of bands comprised of Christians these days to don’t really care to do anymore than point out the flaws in the church. By now, they’re beating a dead horse. Most people know it needs help, and if all you can do is bash it, and not do anything to make it better, perhaps it’s your own lack of commitment that is the flaw. A church full of bands that can only say bad things about the church is dastardly poisonous.

Also, if you’re going to have really vague lyrics about God and say in an interview “we just want the kids to get whatever they want out of it” expect people to overlook any talk about faith. How many artists will actually tell what a song was about for them when they lyrics are very personal? Very few. Indifference as to how your song is interpreted is becoming a cowardly trend.

As Cities Burn don’t fall into either category, and for that I give them props.

Chris, I think what John meant is he could have said it thinking that would be what people wanted to hear. Either way, I don’t think it matters too much, because I agree with what he said…More and more people seem to be thinking that way. And why judge his motives?

But there is always a temptation to say that so as to avoid feeling “pressured” to share Christ. But with a band that talks about God so frequently like ACB, that may not be as much of an issue.

Hear, hear. There is certainly a place for pointing out problems but it seems like people are just simply uncomfortable talking about anything spiritual unless they can find fault in something. We ought to be able to feel more free to express spiritual thoughts without having to always attach a disclaimer.

Uhh, the interview was with Aaron, not Colin.
