I was waiting for Tooth & Nail to swipe up a dance-rock outfit. Little did I know that they would pick up one of the best out there. They never cease to amaze me. Once again signing a group out of nowhere, they present the outfit known as Jonezetta. They have brought new wave back to life and gave it a modernized alt-rock twist. For most of you, you missed the new wave era (as did I but I’m an 80’s freak), so you’ve all been blessed with a second chance to love it.

Insanely fun and lighthearted, ‘Popularity’ flows from start to finish. Many of the songs seem to blend right into the next as if intended to be a continous line. However, most tracks have their own perks and allow each to stand alone. Amazingly, the band presented an album’s worth of singles in their debut and have shown that music can once again be fun and creative at the same time!

Included are straight up keyboard-laced dance tracks like “Get Ready (Hot Machete”), softer almost indie ballads (”The City We Live In”), and everything in between. The production is phenomenal and mixed to perfection but doesn’t come across as overdone and fake. Each instrument was paid plenty of attention and came across the speakers exactly as they should. The band wisely kept an alt-rock base to the tracks as well as tossing in pop sensibility, which when combined offer a more rounded album. ‘Popularity’ is far more infectious than the majority of dance-rock out there and hopefully will replace most.

Overall Rating: I wasn’t sure what I’d think of this album. I had heard their independently released EP with just 4 demo tracks and I liked it but it didn’t fully hook me. I’m not big on this whole dance rock genre and I find it all too repetitive from band to band. I trust Tooth & Nail for the most part so I figured I’d hold off judgement til I could listen all the way through. Well I’m hooked now. The albums is chock full of catchy tracks, that once they get into your head they will not get out. This album certainly has the ability to propel this band to big name stardom if promoted correctly. I could see a bunch of these tracks being MTV “worthy” if you can consider that a worthy thing. This band could easily become T&N’s next big hit group! (9/10)

Standout Tracks: “Get Ready (Hot Machete)”, “Man In A 3K Suit”, “The Love That Carries Me”

Destroy The Runner came out of absolutely nowhere to most folks. I had just previously heard of the band before the name change and signing to Solid State Records. I had heard that they sounded similar to As I Lay Dying, which didn’t surprise me since they were from the same area, and that’s always a plus in my book. So off I set to find out more about this band and what I found made my day! As I read more and heard snippets I was intrigued. Upon reading the lyrics and hearing about the band I was also glad to see another overtly Christian band, proudly unashamed of their beliefs. We need more like this!

Rarely do bands venture out of their comfort zones and safety nets. It is deemed unsafe to venture away from what the fans already know and love. We all know what sells in metalcore; blistering speed, thunderous breakdowns, quick guitarwork, and general mayhem. Destroy The Runner has taken those basics and transformed them into something different and dare I say, more enjoyable. Instead of constant pummeling the band opts to continuously intwine pop-sensible melodies into the mix. Kyle’s throaty screams are offset by Duane’s more soothing cleanly sung vocals. The guitarwork is precise and intricate and at many times work together to harmonize before unleashing earth-shattering rhythms. The song structure and chord progressions are impressive for a debut. The band has mastered their art and have blown me away!

“Dialogue” is an instrumental opener which doesn’t really prepare you for what’s to come, but definitely baits the hook. It builds and builds, layer upon layer, and enthralls your ears. Then comes the setting of the hook. “My Darkness” shows off the band’s harmonizing dual guitar attack. While not being totally brutal, the song is fast and agressive, and reminiscent of some of As I Lay Dying’s guitarwork. The chorus is incredibly catchy is run through quickly and then we see the band’s ferocity with some pummeling rhythm work and chugging guitars. “Saints” comes across more as epic in overall scope, melting the best of both metal and melody together, leaving no seams. Tracks such as “From The Red” (think a catchy August Burns Red) and “Thoughts In Reverse” bring a tougher bite and heaviness to them, while “Without Sight” and “Sound Of Reason” are less brutal, more thought out, and speedy, all the while still keeping their agressive roots.

Overall Rating: I cannot think of another band, even amongst all the metal that I listen to, that really sound the same. Certainly influences and similarities can be heard but DTR have literally destroyed the mold and will hopefully force others to think differently about metal. The diehard metal enthusiasts will dismiss this album as weak, but I believe it’s just the opposite. In fact, another positive aspect is that they will become a gateway band to other, harder bands (like labelmates Underoath & Haste The Day). Very melodic metal with some serious pop appeal. Not pop as in Britney Spears, but in the sense that the band creates captivating and unforgettable hooks. Most will say the album is overproduced and I can understand, but I feel it had to be done this way. Agressive, pop-influenced metal, presented amazingly for a debut! (9/10)

Standout Tracks: “My Darkness”, “Saints”, “Aleph”

    X-Sinner - Fire It Up

    Band: X-Sinner
    Title: Fire It Up
    Label: Retroactive
    Release Date: n/a
    Review By: Josh IndieVision

    Tracklisting:

    01. Fire It Up (Demo)
    02. I Take Power
    03. Gotta Let Go
    04. Rollin Thunder
    05. Getch Ya
    06. Don’t Go
    07. Peer Pressure
    08. We Need Love
    09. All I Need
    10. You Got Me

    Members/Duties:

    Rex Scott: Vocals
    Rob Kniep: Bass:
    Mike Buckner: Drums
    Greg Bishop: Guitar

X-Sinner was formed in the mid-1980’s by guitarist Greg Bishop. The band’s first album “Get It” eventually became a classic but was the only album recorded with the original vocalist. Rex Scott was picked up for the second album “Peace Treaty” and helped the band define their sound even more. He is the vocalist heard on this album as well. These songs were intended to be the sophmore album on Pakaderm Records. The band recorded the effort in 1991 in the Pakaderm Studios under the helm of the Elefante brothers, John & Dino. The band was not happy with how the recordings turned out and eventually resulted in the group leaving the label. “Fire It Up” came as a result of Greg going back and re-recording the album in Australia, in 2004, and also adding a new title cut, “Fire It Up” in 2006.

The first track “Fire It Up” is a demo, which was not originally recorded on the Peace Treaty sessions. It leads off the album with a bit of classic southern rock in vein of ZZ Top. I was surprised at first because it definitely differs from the rest of the album but definitely peaks my interest for the new studio album (”Back In Red”) coming in 2007. Good ol’ southern rock never gets old. “I Take Power” sounds like a huge radio rock hit! Ringing guitars and pounding guitars lead the way to a driving guitar riff. Oh man, the attitude of the hair metal days was great and these guys had it down. The singable and harmonized “I Take Power” chorus drives its way into your head and you will no doubt be singing along. “Peer Pressure” definitely shows off their AC/DC influences. At times they do sound very similar but that usually doesn’t last terribly long. A great anthem complete with an amazing guitar solo!

Overall Rating: As a huge fan of many of the early Christian metal and hard rock outfits this album was a great choice for re-release! Catchy, thunderous arena rock covers most of the songs on this album. This album is a must-own for fans or collector’s of early Christian rock. If you’re simply a fan of classic rock in general you need to check this out! (9/10)

Standout Tracks: “Fire It Up” (Demo), “Rollin Thunder”, “I Take Power”, “You Got Me”

Marketability: This, as with most other Retroactive releases is definitely marketable to older fans of the band and for new fans alike. The band captures the classic rock sound, with anthemic, sing-along choruses and guitar leads. I had previously been a fan of this band, but the re-recorded stuff here sees the band’s vision finally come true. (5/5)

What can I say about Lust Control. Interesting name, interesting band. An uncomprising Christian punk outfit from the late 80’s to early 90’s who I’m sure pushed people’s buttons with song topics about virginity, speaking in tongues, masturbation, planned parenthood, partying, and many other things. The band, which began as a joke, actually became a serious outfit, but soon fizzled out and died. Track 33 gives a detailed commentary on the history of the group, which I thought was a nice edition for new fans. The band, after approached by Retroactive, was given the opportunity to remaster the album, which the band gladly agreed with. (They had not been fans of the original recording’s sound.)

Musically, the band tears through punk and thrash like tunes. They’re a hybrid of some sort, like the always awesome 90LB. Wuss, and are certainly filled with passion for their convictions. Guitars are in your face and blistering fast whilst chugging through power chords. The lead vocals are raw and clearly are not intended to be blissful melodies. Gang vocals are found all over this disc. Plenty of tracks are circle pit approved

Overall Rating: The band takes some getting used to if you’re not into more straightforward punk. I can guarantee it will not be actively in my cd player but will find its way in from time to time. The reason is, mostly, that I’m not a huge fan of this brand of punk. It’s a band you need to hear, so that you can judge for yourself.(6/10)

Standout Tracks: “Virginity Disease”, “If You Fail”, “Pray For The City”

    Individual Ratings:

Lyrics: I like the uncompromising straight-forward approach but I’m not sure the way they present things is the best way. I would think it might cause more negative reactions than positive changes but then again I could be wrong. Sometimes people need to hear the message very bluntly and that is the band’s territory. They most certainly deserve punk cred for standing strong and not playing word games, but it no doubt often put(s) them in the middle of upset people on all sides.(4/5)

Marketability: This is a limited edition re-issue of 1000 copies. Honestly, this is probably more of a collector’s item than anything else. I’m doubting that they will pick up many fans with it. This kind of punk just isn’t big anymore in music, even more so in Christian circles.(3/5)

Well I can’t say I expected the style the band presented on this album. I was a fan of their previous EP, “Exclamationaire” released with Sound Vs. Silence in 2005. They’ve pretty much dropped the previous style, akin to an older Norma Jean era, and headed right for the South. Yes, the good ol’ South, which seems to be taking over the metalcore scene. “Shock Value” is Twelve Gauge Valentine’s debut for the new, younger Solid State roster.

The “Intro” is simply someone messing around with the FM knob attempting to find something to jam to, and to no surprise Everytime I… wait I mean Twelve Gauge Valentine chimes in. Sadly, this cd is eerily similar to many ETID tracks and really does 12GV harm. The band clearly is talented but they should have really attempted to bring a bit more to the table. Many will dismiss them as a simple rip-off band but I will not. The cd is enjoyable and does show me that the band could do great things, if they distance themselves from other contemporaries.

Anyways, the sound is definitely “metal ‘n roll”. Basically take a metalcore outfit and play classic rock for them 24/7 for a bit and this is what you’ll get. Thick, crunching guitars tear throughout the album. The more you listen to the disc, and focus on the guitarwork, the songs begin to stand apart (although not drastically). The band often utilizes fingerwork and tosses in occassional chugging patterns. Very few legit breakdowns are found, but there are some slow Southern-tinged parts that might get a few dancing. The drums are decidedly more metal than ETID’s approach, which is no surprise when checking out the band’s back catalogue. The bass is quite thick and really provides a solid backbone. Vocally, the leads are yelled/screamed, but are quite clear and easily understood. The recording sounds excellent and each instrument is captured quite well and provides and intense listen!

Overall Rating: It certainly has it’s highly enjoyable moments, but also has some spots that are generic and lacking. 12GV doesn’t present the best Southern-influenced metal out there but by far not the worst either. A little variation will go a long way and really help the band stand out. The main areas of issue with me are vocals (sound way too similar to ETID), and the similar (nearly identical) guitar approaches in each track. Needless to say after many listens it is growing on me and I do enjoy the album overall, but give it a lower score due to lack of creativity. (5.5/10)

Standout Tracks: “Casket Junkie”, “Bone Crusher”, “Search Of The Alley Dwellers”

Marketability: The southern influenced metal is big right now so it was an opportune time for the band to “grow” into this style. The album is solid, but lacks catchiness that would be needed to really blow up.(2.5/5)

Apocalypto and Letters from Iwo Jima are being considered as Golden Globe nominees in the “Foreign Language Film” category. Letters from Iwo Jima is directed by Clint Eastwood and is a companion piece to the “Flags of Our Fathers” film, telling the story from the Japanese side of WWII. I dont know how I feel about this but oh well. Speaking of Apocalypto, read some early reviews right here.

Read a newsletter written by Peter Jackson about the state of The Hobbit prequels. This film can’t be made without Peter Jackson is my opinion. His creative team is fantastic and to not utilize their talents would be a huge mistake.

Check out the Trailers for the films below:
    Mr. Bean’s Holiday
    Spider Man 3
    Night at the Museum
and a featurette on The Transformers
    The Nativity Story

    Reviews

Josh has written a bunch of great reviews, see our reviews section in the bottom left hand column of this site for the full list.

Emily has reviewed the Edison Glass album, read that here.

Eric has reviewed the new Copeland album, read that here. This is a one listen album for me, but what do I know right?

We also have a great interview written by Cory with the band Cool Hand Luke that you need to read. Check that out here.

We also have a new fun poll up that you probably have already seen. I was just curious to see what your favorite Indie Vision bands were.

Lastly, what do you guys and gals think of us doing another Unsigned band contest? You know the kind where you can vote on your favorite band and the winning group gets an interview, review, and feature on our site. If you’re in a band, maybe you’d like to contribute? I am also on the hunt for bands to lend us songs for our “Hot Downloads” section. I use to keep it updated more frequently back when the old site design was up. Well ever since the Summer Slam Compilation, I haven’t posted anything “new” to the site. If you could could contact some good unsigned/independent bands (or even signed bands if they’re allowed) and let them know we are in need of their songs, that’d be awesome. Tell them all about the exposure they’ll get here on Indie Vision Music. That’s all for now.

Lovely is Death by Gabriel Wilson

Gabriel Wilson, frontman of The Listening, is releasing an acoustic solo album entitled ‘Lovely is Death.’ The name itself sounds incredibly emo, but I hear a few people here or there are into that…

However, The Listening is incredibly good, so regardless of the name, Lovely is Death could very well be awesome too.

’Lovely is Death’ starts shipping December 10th. You can pre-order it now at LTownMusic.
