Song of the Day: Mortal - Cryptic

I’m sure a few of you have been wondering when I was going to eventually get around to covering this important band. Well, wait no longer. Mortal’s roots were in a similarly-named synth-pop project called Mortal Wish. While that version of the band showed promise, it only hinted at the greatness that was to come after a minor name change and a huge change in direction. (FYI: downloads of 2 different Mortal Wish demos are available online if you know where to look for them!) The mysteriously-titled (Lusis means “freedom”), dark and brooding debut hit stores in 1992 via Intense Records, the first in the industrial genre for the otherwise exclusively metal label.… Continued →

Allen Odell - Are You Okay? (New Song)

Allen Odell released a brand new song titled “Are You Okay?” back in January and it is a magical, beautifully dynamic yet simple, new song. I’m loving the vocals and soft guitar strumming from Allen. This song has some soft beats in the background adding layers to this already great sound. It’s like a mix of Matt Kearney, Jon Foreman, and David Bazan with a little Snow Patrol thrown in (vocally). This is a bright and uplifting track, perfect for those warm spring/summer days (still to come).… Continued →

Switchfoot Joins Nickelback and Stone Temple Pilots on Tour This Summer

This is no joke. A personal fave of mine, a band we call Switchfoot is joining up with world renown Canadian rock band Nickelback and California based grunge-alt-rock band, Stone Temple Pilots (STP) for a run of dates this summer/fall. This might just an epic rock extravaganza or How You Remind Me of a cringe worthy PHOTOGRAPH? Either way, there is a little something for everyone and a true rock n’ roll fan to enjoy. I’ve heard the new vocalist of STP is one of the best.… Continued →

UPDATE:Ā  Switchfoot has confirmed the end of their hiatus in a new video and announced that the journey begins 10/19/2018! Original Post: SwitchfootĀ have taken to social media to tease album number 11. The bandĀ uploaded an pictureĀ of an “11” last night leaving fans to guess what it means. Naturally one can only assume they’re teasing their 11th studio album, but after theĀ April Fool’s Day videoĀ teasing metal cover of “Meant to Live” it’s anybody’s guess. Speaking of that video though, it referred to “Project 11” and teased a October 2018 release date.… Continued →

Gravity Galore: A Brief History of Christian Songs Titled "Gravity"

“Fire” and “water” are arguably the most overused metaphors in contemporary Christian music. But there is another common nature-themed metaphor in Christian music you may not have noticed: gravity. I by no means consider my research to be exhaustive, but I found nearly two dozen songs from the past 25 years with “gravity” in the title. Researching Christian music prior to the 1990’s is a difficult task. While I have little doubt that this theme continues back into the 80’s and maybe even 70’s the earliest contemporary Christian song titled “Gravity” I’ve been able to find so far* is from 1995.… Continued →

Switchfoot Return With Powerful, Artistic Take on Modern Metal

Switchfoot have gracefully returned from their years long slumber to reemerge as a metal band. Check out this first single titled “Project 11” which does sound eerily familiar but not sure quite how. This is the “heaviest” the band has ever sounded. Those of you that were secretly wishing for a Jeremy Camp metal project can settle for second best and get a sweet Switchfoot one instead. What goes better with the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ than Bunnies, Eggs, Peeps, and good ol’ heavy metal?… Continued →

Switchfoot Announce Hiatus

The men in Switchfoot have announced their hiatus in 2018. They’ve been a band for 20 years which is quite an accomplishment. The fact that these core guys could stick together this long and put out a consistent set of cherished songs for 2 decades is admirable. I wish them the best and thanks for all the years of entertaining, uplifting and well loved songs. We were meant to live for so much more, indeed.… Continued →

Best of 2016: Ian DeVaney

2016 was a great year for Christian music, so great in fact that I found it difficult to keep up with all of the releases coming out! These are the albums that I found myself listening to the most over the course of the year though, and after spending a few days listening to the others that I missed, I’m quite comfortable saying that these are the best releases of the year! 1. Switchfoot – Where the Light Shines Through 2. Dogs of Peace – HeelĀ  3.Continued →

REVIEW : Switchfoot - Where The Light Shines Through

As I begin this review, I should probably note that Iā€™ve been a Switchfoot fan since I first heard ā€œMeant to Liveā€ on the radio all the way back in 2003. I was 11 years old and just beginning to get into music at the time. Switchfoot quickly became one of my favorite bands ā€“ a place that they still hold 13 years later. I remember often lying in my bed late at night and waiting for one of their songs like ā€œStarsā€ or ā€œDare You To Moveā€ to come on the radio.… Continued →
