Woman (Oh Mama) – Joy Williams

Alternative artist Joy Williams (formerly, The Civil Wars) posted a new music video on her Facebook this morning with the tagline:

I am a universe wrapped in skin. Maybe too much skin. But I felt I needed to show who I was from the inside out. Who we all are. I’m excited (and a little nervous) to share the video for “Woman (Oh Mama)” with you… Watch it it now!”

“Woman (Oh Mama)” comes from Joy’s upcoming album Venus. There is currently no release date but it will be out this Summer.

(As a warning, the video does in fact show quite a bit of skin. It is all tastefully and artfully done with no explicit nudity. However, I am sure it is more than enough to offend someone and/or make them stumble.)

Lecrae – Welcome to America

Lecrae’s new music video for “Welcome to America”, off of his album Anomaly, peels off the veneer of the America many of us know for a heavy look into a broken world of poverty, fear, and injustice which lies beneath the surface. It’s a powerful song which resonates with people all the more with every new headline in the news.

The director, Isaac Deitz, who’s been working on the video since December of 2014, revealed some of the behind the scenes process in an interview on the Film Rant Podcast. . Shot as a documentary, Deitz wanted to “show America in the way Lecrae’s describing it, how people are struggling in this world. We’re all humans at the end of the day, all trying to get food on our tables.” He shot film all over the place, including just blocks from his own home, including (with release forms), footage of “prostitutes, a crack head smoking crack in his house — police men, firefighters, it’s all real, the only direction I’ve given anyone is ‘do what you do.'” Once you’ve seen the video, you’ll realize how big the scope is and why it must have taken months for Deitz to put it all together. And what you see on the video in four minutes barely dips into the three terabytes of film he captured. Listen to the whole interview, because Isaac Deitz shares some great stories and insights into his process.

We Are The City – King David

We Are The City’s video for their single, “King David,” premiered on The Line of Best Fit:

Lead singer Cayne McKenzie describes the song and video: “King David came as the first song of Violent idea during a stay on an island off the coast of Vancouver. At that point, I was staying up quite late, I had turned my sleep schedule on it’s end. We were renting a room in the basement of a church, it was a kids play room. There were keyboards and pedals, guitars and amps, tape recorders and toy cars with puzzle pieces spread all around. The guitar line came out and the vocal part followed close behind. Though it was the first song to start, it was the last song finished before recording two years later.

“The video is a response to an earlier video that we released. It is in contrast to Baptism. Instead of light liquids and bright shots with close up shots of faces bombarded by sparks and smoke, we have a dark room and black liquid covering a single subject. The lyrics of King David are about examining your own insides. They are about trying to find a way around feeling self deprecating and dark. The video is supposed to feel uncomfortable to watch, like the lyrics.”
