I got that too, but it only would make sense if we knew the meaning behind the song.

    • Sam says:

My guess as to the meaning of the lyrics is that it’s supposed to be Satan urging a guy to reject grace and continue steadfast in his sinful ways. I guess you could apply that to the Danny Trejo character in the video.

As I long-time MATSOD fan, I like the album a lot too. I guess the most appealing thing about the video is the poetic justice. Not the most edifying message though haha

I’ve been thinking about getting the new album despite all the naysayers… this helps. Implausible as it is (Which doesn’t matter much in this kind of genre), that chainsaw use was great. I saw this elsewhere and honestly didn’t expect to see it get posted here. I’m perfectly ok with it, but I wouldn’t have questioned anything if it didn’t get posted.

  21. Whelp… Sub par song, unconsidered video, big name actor. I think this video would have worked without those subtitles just fine, and my personal opinion is that any music video that can’t tell its story without subtitles is most likely too complicated or not thought-out enough…

  24. Really confused why a, what I thought was a christian band, would put barely clothed women in a video. Yeah, I understand the idea of getting revenge on a pedo(but: “revenge is mine, thus say the Lord”) but theres no need to put these women in a video that a majority of guys are going to watch(much less ever video taping them in general). Looks like I’m selling my collection…

    Reply

    • rowdyrob says:

As far as the women in the video: I’m pretty sure that many, many other vids on the internet have women wearing much, much less that are the real stumbling block for men out there.

^^That’s the problem with many “Christians” these days. Mediocre and not willing to stand up for what is right.

  27. Brandon says:

We posted it here because this is a band that receives regular coverage on a number of “Christian” websites including our own. Until the band comes out with a statement that goes against the message of Christ and decides upon being labeled differently, we’ll continue covering the band and their music.

  28. Ryan says:

Looks like the pharaisees are picking up their stones. It’s ridiculous someone would sell their collection because of this video. Good grief.

  29. kevin fitz says:

    Let them hurl their stones.

The moment i saw this video i knew what was going to happen, i think we all did. This is going to become a debate of who is in the right, who isn’t. Guess what, we’re all sinners so we’re all in the wrong. Done and done

    Reply

  30. Evan says:

KnownameCris, who are you talking about? tim or Kevin? because i agree with tim…this video does not represent Christ at all. i don’t care if Maylene is “trying to make a point” – there is no reason to put a potential stumbling block in someone’s way in order to do so.

    Reply

    • DT says:

I could be wrong but… I’m thinking some people, whose primary thought was that the women in the video are barely clothed, have already built their own stumbling block into a fortress through their own fears, guilt, and repression that serves to sensationalize sin into a bigger temptation than it is. In other words, sometimes people stumble only because they worry about stumbling–not because of the blocks others place in front of them.

  31. Evan says:

that may be some people, DT, but it’s not me.
again, my concern is with Maylene creating a video that could be, and undoubtedly is, a stumbling block for people who genuinely struggle with this sort of thing. a band that affiliates itself with Christ needs to do everything possible to present a positive and spiritually sharpening message – not one that reflects worldly values and encourages fleshly thoughts. surely you agree with me there.

    Reply

    • DT says:

As a band whose theme revolves around the family of Ma Barker, I don’t hold them to such standards. Anyone who has a MATSOD collection should know better than to expect Christ-centered lyrics.

I would agree the video isn’t positive. I don’t agree it encourages fleshly thoughts related to barely clothed women. For me, it encourages fleshly thoughts of vengeance and justice. I’m ok with that. I understand grace enough to know better than to actually seek vengeance through the ridiculous horror movie means in this video or the criminal justice system.

  32. Evan says:

well maybe i’m speaking from ignorance here, but i was under the impression that MATSOD was another one of those bands which, while no explicitly Christian, are still seeking to “shine a light” through the message contained in their music. please correct me if i’m wrong, but i thought they were in the same boat as, say, Underoath.

    Reply

    • DT says:

Ha, did you say Underoath cause you knew Dallas used to be the vocalist for Underoath? Maylene has been made up of Christian members and they have, and continue to be, associated with blatant Christian bands through touring and guest spots on albums. Still, it’s my opinion that it’s more accurate to not think of them as a band seeking to “shine a light.” At least not in the typical manner.

Maylene and The Sons of Disaster is essentially one big morality tale about a family of criminals from the early 1900′s who met a grisly end. Very different from your typical “shine a light” or “Christian” band. There is a lot of religion in the storytelling, but it’s so different that I wouldn’t advocate placing upon them the usual Christian expectations associated with a band like Underoath. It’s just not who they’re trying to be. They don’t fit in any of the usual “Christian music” boxes.

It’s funny, now that I write this, I realize the story in the music video is essentially what Maylene is about. Criminals who aren’t able to escape consequences for their actions. Perfect.

  33. kevin fitz says:

Evan, he was talking about me. I’d address it, but no one would like the outcome of that.

Anyways, i agree with DT on it all.
Also, if that is a stumbling block for some of you you may not want to go to the beach in the summer or turn on a television set or even go online or even stand in line at a grocery store because of the magazine rack.
I mean, to what ridiculous extreme do we want to take this?
    Forgive my sarcasm, but seriously.

    Reply

  34. Evan says:

DT – i never realized that about Maylene. i guess that changes my understanding of their music a bit. thank you for clarifying.

Kevin – actually, you’re right. despite your sarcasm, i completely agree. if someone has a genuine problem with lust, then they should be as extreme as necessary in uprooting that sin [in all of its forms] from their life. but, since you don’t call yourself a Christian, i don’t expect you to understand.

    Reply

    • Tim Roberts says:

Complete agreement with evan. I didn’t put enough effort into studying what MATSOD was really all about and I completely agree with his reply to kevin. There are hordes of Christian men out there that have problems with lust, thats why they dont do those things stated.

I honestly don’t understand the problem with it. I agree with DT. The people who are offended by this LET it offend them. They are the ones who need to grow up in the sense that, stop letting things bother you.
I watched it, and ok, theres a girl in a cheerleader outfit, okay… high school?

As for the other girl. you see more when you walk into a grocery store and see the mags.

What if a band made a video of some of the violence in the bible? That book is one of the most violent books ever written.

    Reply

    • Smacky X says:

Zac- it’s out on line to say that someone “needs to grow up” if something offends them, or to say that they are “letting it” offend them. Did you take the time to think that it might legitimately offend them. I’d say that people “need to grow up” if they are trying to make their personal standard a universal standard, or if they are too quick to judge or too slow to understand. But you can’t fault someone for having a hard time with a concept, or for trying to process something according to their faith understanding…

If people are saying “these guys clearly aren’t Christians” or something to that effect, that is not right of them. But IVM has readers and post-ers from different christian backgrounds who are trying to really understand this stuff.

And we should admit that both sides of the debate use simplistic reasoning at times. One side simply dismisses something as wrong … but the other side accepts it as ok, reasoning that “it could be worse” or “they are Christians so we shouldn’t really question it.”

I have really liked Maylene for a really long time, and this video isn’t going to change the things I like about them. But I don’t think that it’s audacious at all that people are questioning the elements of the video that they are, even if they are drawing different conclusions than I might.

Indirectly related to this part of the conversation, I have to say I respect tim roberts for asking questions using Scripture as his basis. This video appeals to my passion for justice, and to my hatred for the actions of abusers/predators. But is the message of the video compatible with a right (biblical) understanding of true justice? Does it confuse that message? I think these are legitimate questions to ask

    • Lucas says:

Zac please… I’ve seen that “there’s violence in the bible” comment so many times. Everything in God’s word is for a higher purpose: to reflect Him by means of our depravity. This is why I love Oh, Sleeper and Showbread despite some of the violence in their lyrics. For example Oh, Sleeper’s “The Marriage of Steel and Skin” is a pretty violent song about when someone tries to take justice in his own hands apart from God.
This video is just silly and meaningless. I hardly find it disturbing but I don’t think it’s worth giving my time to.. and I think it’s unwise for Christians to portray violent images as a means for entertainment.

    • Lucas says:

Excuse me I meant to say “a lot of the violence” in God’s word is for a higher purpose to reflect our depravity. Not everything obviously. :)

    • Zac says:

Idk what to even say, what I mean is- yeah the video sucks, it has nothing to do with the song in every way possible.

I think people have the right and the justification to not like it, and not like what’s in it. But people were going to the extent of saying that they weren’t a christian band anymore. THey’re like the people who banned showbread cds from their stores when anorexia and nervosa came out.

  37. Evan says:

alright Zac. following your line of logic, please send me your address so my girlfriend and i can come over and have sex on your couch right in front of you. if you let it bother you, you need to grow up.

@ “don’t hold them up to UO level of xian”: Underoath’s frontman isn’t a Christian anymore last I checked. Maybe if you’re talking about old Underoath…

The way I view Maylene is it’s a Christian message, just told differently and something all people can relate to so you can’t fault them for not having “check out Jesus he so cool” lyrics. Unfortunately the video isn’t playing for me, so I’m just going off the comments. I think if a guy is furiously turned on everytime he sees a girl in a bikini or whatever, he probably just needs to learn self-control in that area. I agree that sometimes women need to be more tasteful of what they wear, but I don’t think we should judge someone for not dressing like Rebecca St. James every day. Especially a fictional character..in a music video…the point of which I’m sure was not just “look at these girls. they aren’t wearing much. woo hoo!” :P

John, like I said, I don’t have a problem with this stuff. I wasn’t remotely turned on. But I would rather not look at a woman who is provocatively dressed like that unless she’s my wife. I think that’s a reasonable stance to take, don’t you?

also, John, where did you find the info that Spencer Chamberlain doesn’t claim to be a Christian anymore?

Spencer never said he wasn’t a Christian anymore, some people are just assuming that from the interviews they’ve seen/read/heard. You can listen to a interview BlankTV did with Spencer here:

Or read an interview from last year:

This debate, about the content of the video, seems to what happen to Brian Head Welch with his video “Flush”:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MN_7DXt7o4A

In this video, the goal is to show a huge part of his life (drugs) as real as possible. You see girls with “drugs” on their body and other stuff. I remember a post on his Myspace who he wrote that MANY typical “Christian book stores” removed his CD from their tablets after having seen the clip. Head told: “Thanks God for Itunes!”.

I think, as a Christian or not, it’s essential to think about the content first.

To the “there go the pharisees” comments…Christians judging Christians for judging is a bit like that annoying Alanis Morissette song. Also, Maylene wasn’t Jesus last time I checked (no matter how nice their beards are).
People have a right to be offended by this just as much as the other side has the right to enjoy it. Personally, I find the video to be kind of a dumb re-tread of a million other revenge fantasy films, except Danny Trejo is in it (actually, Danny Trejo is in a lot of those, too…dude is enjoyable to watch, though).
So anyway, if someone makes something contentious, it’s kind of ridiculous to get upset about people contending with it (nothing to add, just wanted another parenthetical). I just wish they would have found a better use for Danny Trejo. I feel like he has romantic comedy muscles that are waiting in vain to be stretched.
