so glad you put Masstaden at number 2. that album is insane. glad to see someone else knows who they are. also that substructure EP is amazing. But you forgot Eden 2.0 by Tesseract!
I didn’t forget it I just think the songs/albums mentioned were better :/. I wanted to love “One”, it was just really flat. Impressive, but the production makes it feel flat to me. And I haven’t had the time to check out “Eden 2.0″, but I heard there’s no screaming and I loved that about the original version.
The song I left off was “Traces” by Vildhjarta. I do think that album is best listened to straight through, kinda like Tesseract’s “One”, but with a better mix and a little more ambitious.
Just my thoughts though. I still enjoy Tesseract :) I’m stoked for the new Periphery album next year hbu? Apparently Spencer used absolutely zero autotune or pitch corrector on the new album :D
yeah, definitely check out Eden 2.0. much better production and the new singer is phenomenal! yeah, traces is ridiculous! although i prefer the older instrumental version. Yeah new periphery should be sick!

now this guy… he has a good list
This was a not too bad year! Foo Fighters, Thrice, and o’brother were all big standouts for me. I still haven’t had the chance to really check out Switchfoot’s latest yet.
Next year means new Showbread, probably new Moving Mountains, (hopefully) new The Mars Volta, and new Blood and Water, and those are enough for me to be stoked, lol. :)

SOLID!! I definitely agree with you on those first five albums!
….but:
1. As The World Bleeds
2. Children of Fire
3. Leveler
4. Dissimulation
5. thegodmachine (Literally THE BEST debut from any metal band I’ve ever heard in a while!)
Every time I try and listen to Phinehas, I think to myself, “If I’m going to listen to an As I Lay Dying knock off band, I’d rather listen to the original.”
So just because they have strong screams, good clean singing, and lots of lead guitar they’re an As I Lay Dying knockoff? There’s more to their music than that.
Ehhhhhh…… To quote the great Chasing Victory, “If you are feeling original, don’t let it go to your head, it’s all been done before.”
If you didn’t know, As I Lay Dying has two vocalists. Phinehas has one. Besides the band has a different sound than AILD.

Darn it I left Hands completely off that list! Also forgot My Epic’s “Deathbed”. That song is phenomenal!
finally someone listed falling up in their list, my numero uno album of the year….
I found this to be a very weak year for new music that I like. So much so, that I’d seriously consider putting a couple Christmas albums on my best-of list. And I can’t even come up with at top-10 list.
1) Matt Papa – This Changes Everything
2) Mae – (E)vening
3) Mute Math – Odd Soul

(SO looking forward to the new DH, SbR, and TFK albums!!)
And by the way, I LOVE your profile pic… (THE FINISHER!!)
1. The Famine – The Architects of Guilt

6. Sosaveme – The Garden
7. Life In Your Way – Kingdoms
8. Hands – Give Me Rest
9. Memphis May Fire – The Hollow
10. My Epic – Broken Voice
I feel like everyone forgot about the famine because they were so early in the year…
Or because that album was highly overrated.
If you say so.
Maybe real metal scares people.
^This.
Wow. I usually disagree with people, but this year I am totally off from what y’all got. I can’t express enough how important the two albums are on my “best of” list. It would be well worth your time to check out both albums.
Last year, I only put albums that I rated 8.5 or higher in my “best of”. If any album had more than 3 tracks that I skip, then I didn’t put it in the “best of”.
I did the same this year.
THE BEST ALBUMS OF 2011
1. Shai Linne, “The Attributes of God”
This, ladies and gentlemen, is what we call a “game changer”. Check out the slow flow on “Lord of Patience”, check out the incredible beats on “Triune Praise (remix)”, “The Glory of God”, “The Omnis” and “Taste and See”. A lot of good hip hop came out in 2011 – certainly more than in any other genre -, but this was the best.
2. Creations “The Gospel”
This album is totally heavy with great lyrics. No clean singing, mega breakdowns, superbly percussive.
Honorable mentions: Braille “Native Lungs”, Da’ TRUTH “The Whole Truth”, Tedashii “Blacklight”, A Plea For Purging “The Life and Death of A Plea For Purging”, Pristina featuring Annabel Adams “The Killing Jar”, The Echoing Green “In Scarlet and Vile”, Lorenguard “Eve of Corruption”.
THE WORST ALBUM OF 2011: Hillsong “Aftermath”.
THE BEST ALBUMS OF 2010
1. Lampmode Records “The Church: Called & Collected”
2. Messengers “Anthems”
3. Living Sacrifice “The Infinite Order”
4. Json “City Lights”
5. Evangel “Expository Journey”,
6. Overcome “The Great Campaign of Sabotage”
7. Jamiroquai “Rock Dust Light Star” (not available in the USA and I’m not paying to have it imported, so I’ve only streamed it)
Honorable mentions: Daft Punk “Tron Legacy” score, the Human League “Credo”, Decipha “Rep”. I spent much of 2010 and 2011 still listening to 2009′s Thieves and Liars “American Rock N Roll” and Huntingtons “Punk Sounds”.
THE ONLY ANTICIPATED ALBUMS OF 2012:
Living Sacrifice, Timothy Brindle, and Flatfoot 56
Couldn’t agree more on worst album, lol. Nice to know I’m not alone on that
Uhh didn’t These Hearts come out this year? That beats Hillsong
Ooh, that’s true. And Design the Skyline too
1. “Young Love” by Kye Kye (Hands down best album of 2011. These guys deserve a lot more attention.)
2. “Children of Fire” by Oh, Sleeper
3. “With Shivering Hearts We Wait” by Blindside
4. “Young Love” by Mat Kearney
5. “Us; The Hollows” by Intohimo
I would like to reference the fact that Intohimo sounds for the most part just like early Underoath, but not as polished (I do however like this band).
I saw intohimo live last spring here in Finland and thought is this Underoath :D But they were good live nonetheless.
I need to get that Kye Kye album!
I’m really considering Kye Kye my Christian aoty, but so many people were including (e)vening on their lists I threw it in there. But yeah Young Love is seriously phenomenal, best CHristian debut I’ve heard in a looooooong while
You all make it sound like sounding like early Underoath is a bad thing. But no one mocks Phinehas for sounding exactly like Haste the Day or As I Lay Dying? And sounding like early Underoath is a great thing. A boy brushed red. Just saying.
Dallas Taylor-Underoath is my fav. :)
1. La Dispute – “Wildlife”
2. Bon Iver – “Bon Iver, Bon Iver”
3. Manchester Orchestra – “Simple Math”
4. Balance and Composure – “Separation”
5. My Epic – “Broken Voice”
6. Sainthood Reps – “Monoculture”
7. Thrice – “Major/Minor”
8. The Wonder Years – “Suburbia I Gave You All and Now I’m Nothing”
9. Touche Amore – “Parting The Sea Between Brightness and Me”
10. The Black Keys – “El Camino”
here’s a list i can back
Wow… Sleeping Giant barely made any of the lists. Only a couple. 13th and 5th.
Would have been #1 for me. Hands second.
I haven’t put up mine… yet. :D
Sleeping Giant was for me an incredible album. I haven’t done a list or compared it to other albums, but it is definitely up there! Getting to meet Tommy and see the band at Sonshine was also incredible!
Hands also put out a great album, and it was great to see them live as well (though it meant missing FF5 – not much of a sacrifice, considering I’ve seen them before and wasn’t too impressed.).
I’m not sure why, but I’ve never really been able to get fully in to them. I thought the new cd was pretty good though! I think I put it at about 22 which is leagues above how much I’ve enjoyed their other stuff. I really like them live though.
@ Loren Wade: I agree with you man!!! Sleeping Giant would have been my No. 1 also!!! Followed by Saving Grace and (@Boaz, this is for you:-) BTA!!! I haven’t listened to the new albums of Theocracy and Life in Your Way yet though… they might come before BTA in my list… oh, I almost forgot about Lecrae’s “Rehab” and “God is Able” from Hillsong…
My #2 album this year. Unbelievable album. So empowering!!
Lol @ Stevo and I agree about Saving Grace. Got to throw Phinehas some love too.
I am to embarrassed to post my list but that BTA was not on any above probably means would just get ridiculed anyway.
1.Close Your Eyes- Empty Hands and Heavy Hearts
2.No Bragging Rights – Illuminator
3.Debtor – Bloodseeds
4.Adele- 21
5.Hundredth – Let Go
6.Becoming The Archetype – Celestial Completion
7.Big Bang- Tonight
8.Jackie Evancho – Dream With Me
9.Life In Your Way- Kingdoms
10.Hands – Give Me Rest
backed.
1. Shai Linne – Attributes of God
2. Gungor – Ghosts Upon the Earth
3. Spraynard – Funtitled
4. Joyce Manor – Joyce Manor
5. Bomb the Music Industry – Vacation
6. Craig’s Brother – The Insidious Lie
7. The Wonder Years – Suburbia I’ve Given You My All and Now I’m Nothing
8. Laura Stevenson and the Cans – Sit Resist
9. New Found Glory – Radiosurgery
10. Transit – Listen & Forgive
Notes: Wasting Light by Foo Fighters is not in my top ten, but that was awesome and i like the direction that they’re going
Tedashii’s album Blacklight was good, but a let down for me, I really liked Identity Crisis and I was hoping for better
I havent listened to the new Bosstones enough, but its pretty solid so far (going to see them for hometown throwdown, that will be rad)
Also, just grabbed the Waffle Stompers, so far I love it
If you can’t tell i’m not really into breakdowns and screaming all the time, so excuse me for leaving off your favorite whatever
I guess I’m not hipster enough to do the whole bon iver thing, whatever…
Albums I’m looking forward to:
Relient K
David Crowder* Band (the final one)
Timothy Brindle
Sons of Odin
Trip Lee
Westbound Train (Obi Fernandez)
if Five Iron has their album out by the end of the year that would be rad
Woah this is list is awesome bro. Mad props for Joyce Manor and Vacation. Sit Resist is good stuff too. Didn’t get into Spraynard though when I listened to it, didn’t give it enough of a chance probably.
yeah no one really mentioned joyce manor or vacation, the joyce manor album blew my mind, my friend told me to check it out and i was so happy he did. spraynard is my love for pop punk, its good late 90s early 2000s pop punk and i love it.
now looking at it, my list is so odd, the last 8 go together, but the first two are kind of random
Five Iron Frenzy won’t be out until 2013. I can imagine it will be on my tops for that year though!
Here’s mine.
Best of 2011:
1. Theocracy- As the World Bleeds
2. Phinehas- thegodmachine
3. Hands- Give Me Rest
4. Josh Garrels- Love & War & The Sea In Between
5. Jenny and Tyler- Faint Not
6. Saving Grace- The King is Coming
7. Becoming the Archetype- Celestial Completion
8. Eisley- The Valley
9. Oh, Sleeper- Children of Fire
10. The Ember Days- Emergency
11. Sleeping Giant- Kingdom Days in an Evil Age
12. The Great Commission- Heavy Worship
13. Emery- We Do What We Want
14. Life In Your Way- Kingdoms
15. The Gun Show- Discontentment
Best Christmas album of 2011:
Timbre- Silent Night
Most disappointing albums of 2011:
1. The Devil Wears Prada- Dead Throne
2. Deadlock- Bizzaro World (This isn’t a Christian band, but I figured I’d go ahead and throw it on the list anyway.)
3. The Famine- The Architects of Guilt (This wasn’t a bad album, but it was kind of a disappointment compared to “The Raven and the Reaping”.)
1. The Gun Show- Discontentment
2. Gideon- Costs
3. In the Midst of Lions- Shadows
4. August Burns Red- Leveler
5. Love Begotten- Ugly, Dirty, Poor.
HM- Not One is Upright- God is Not a Watchmaker, and the World Isn’t Ticking.
Top Not- APFP, Their Life and Death or whatever (It was solid, but man… Son, I am disappoint.)
100% without a doubt, if The Gun Show went with Facedown (they were offered, but felt that wasn’t what God wanted for them), they would have been on Scream the Prayer this year and “Discontentment” would be in the top 10 for everyone’s metal list. So unique, that album pushed the boundaries of what Christ-centered aggressive music can be. Also, no one knows them, but Love Begotten’s “Ugly, Dirty, Poor” is probably better than The Chariot’s “Long Live.” I said it and stand by it.
Top Not-Christian Album (for me)
shitbird- Dropping a Deuce http://datathrash.bandcamp.com/album/dropping-a-deuce
Pure insanity, this is probably the heaviest a Game Boy ever sounded. If you like trying new things, you will not be disappointed.
also, I don’t understand “Heavy Worship” on so many lists. Talk about trite. I still enjoy them live, but not that album.
My top 10:
1. The Great Commission – Heavy Worship
2. Sleeping Giant – Kingdom Days in an Evil Age
3. FM Static – My Brain Says Stop, But My Heart Says Go!
4. Life In Your Way – Kingdoms
5. Times of Grace – The Hymn of a Broken Man
6. Oh, Sleeper – Children of Fire
7. Seventh Day Slumber – The Anthem of Angels
8. Becoming The Archetype – Celestial Completion
9. August Burns Red – Leveler
10. Haste the Day – Haste the Day Vs. Haste the Day/Thousand Foot Krutch – Live at the Masquerade (Tie)
Reading Gozola’s post right above this and then reading this made me laugh out loud. Hahaha!
lol, yep, I”m not gonna say anything ^_^
Oh, Sleeper’s – Children of Fire was such a weak sauce album. Shane really needs to stop with the Nickelback acoustic crap. Just saying, talented guy but needs to know that Oh, Sleeper is not the place for that.
Here is my top Metal and Hardcore List:
1) Animals As Leaders – Weightless
2) Hands – Give Me Rest
3) Becoming The Archetype – Celestial Completion
4) Close Your Eyes – Empty Hands & Heavy Hearts
5) Hundredth – Let Go
6) La Dispute – Wildlif
7) Gideon – Costs
8) The Famine – Architects of Guilt
9)August Burns Red – Leveler
10) The Human Abstract – Digital Veil
11) Uneven Structure – Februus
12) Tesseract – One
13) Hope For The Dying – Dissimulation
14) A Plea For Purging – The Life & Death
15) Pianos Become The Teeth – The Lack Long After
16) Oh, Sleeper – Children of Fire
17) Touche Amore – Parting The Sea Between Brightness & Me
18) The Devil Wears Prada – Dead Throne
19) Decoder – Self Titled
20) Balance & Composure – Separation
How anyone can compare anything Oh, Sleeper has done to Nickelback is beyond me. I thought Means to Believe was amazing and a nice break from the heaviness on Children of Fire. I hate how some people listen to metal so long it’s like they can’t appreciate anything soft anymore.
“Children of Fire was such a weak sauce album”…
Yet its in your top metal album list.
That made sense…
Amen Lucas. Means to Believe lyrically has such a deep meaning, especially considering Shane wrote it about his own life and it originally wasn’t even intended for the album. And it’s pretty much insanely beautiful musically too…
good to see Pianos Become the Teeth on here! great album!
I’ll narrow my list down to my top 5:
Phinehas
Blindside
James Durbin
Midnight Hour

The Parousia
Stellar Kart
The Rugged Spud

Altars
Good list. I enjoyed what I heard from James Durbin and the Quinn Ivory 3 song thing was great. It was more of an unofficial demo which is why it didn’t end up on my list. Also Keith never sent me The Parousia ep ;)
Oh and I don’t own Life on Repeat or new Ocean is Theory
technically the EP was released in 2010 but it looks like Brandon may be getting a stocking suffer.
BTW Steve, I might see you in february
I know when the EP was release I just didn’t have it until this year =P. Awesome I hope I get to see you in feb!

So wired for those!
Chandler, Living Sacrifice’s The Infinite Order came in 2010. AWESOME album though. It’s one of my favorites too! Anyways, they are planning on having a new album in 2012 though! Should I say next year? It just sounds weird because “next year” is in a few days. HA!
Oh yeah haha I guess idk why I was thinking that. That thing hasn’t stopped playing since then. Maybe it’ll be in my top albums of the year every year ;) And they were talking about writing a covers album, which, in my opinion would be awesome!
Me too Chandler. I’m listening to it now. It’s one of my favorites for sure! 2010 was an awesome year. Living Sacrifice’s and Demon Hunter’s albums of last year are still in my rotation since they came out. Not to mention the War of Ages, Haste the Day, and Disciple albums that year too. Top 5 of last year for sure. But those LS and DH albums…man. Too good! They are also my favorite bands though.
A Living Sacrifice covers album? That sounds awesome! I didn’t know. That would be cool if it happened. Thanks Chandler!
I don’t want an album of LS doing covers but and album of newer bands doing LS covers would be AWESOME.
It was awhile ago they talked about it, so I actually doubt they’d do it. But hm maybe some cover songs, who knows. But not sure I agree with you @Boaz, depends on what band would be covering LS and what song too. I’d honestly be more stoked for LS doing covers :)
Here is my list in no particular order…

I forgot about that Stickup Kid album, yeah it was good. I think they will be even better on the next album. Good list however I didn’t dig the Man Overboard album on the first few listens. You should seriously check out the punk band, MUTE, from Quebec, Canada quality stuff there.

And I probably forgot some. Oh, and best non-Christian, Bon Iver, by far.
I really can’t get into Bon Iver…sounds too pretentious and hipster-ish to me.
too pretentious? no way dude, that man makes music of legends
The music is decent, but the vocals are not my thing
Yea, I love Dead Letter Circus. Such an awesome band and good sound. They need more recognition here in the US!
yeah i went and saw them a couple of weeks ago, they were so incredible live, kim’s voice was perfect, i don’t even know.
I seriously didn’t realize how much this website listened to metal/metalcore/etc until all of these lists started going up.
and that’s why I frequent here, because a lot people listen to that kinda sturf.
And I don’t know why that is… Only couple of the staff are “metal-oriented”. But maybe they are/have been very active in posting. I personally would love a wider focus cause I’m sure there is way more out there. But maybe metal is very popular in christian circles outside the regular CCM crowd?
In my experience, it isn’t popular at all haha.

Overall, a great year with releases from many of my top 10 favorite bands that either lived up to my expectations or came really close. I was expecting Thrice to be better but for some reason it just never clicked with me the way their past 3 or 4 releases have. Still a great album nonetheless. I guess some might wonder about BtA being so high but that album remains my favorite summer metal release and I still have more fun spinning it then any metal album. Also, Sainthood Reps wins my award of best debut and best new band. Look forward to hearing more from them in the future. That album blew me away.
No Oh Sleeper?
I know, that’s a weird thought considering I loved their first two albums so much. It’s right there with #15. I just couldn’t really get into it though. I loved the clean singing and softer songs the most. The heavier stuff had some cool moments but overall I’ve heard it from them before. It’s no coincidence that the heavy stuff I do have on my list aren’t at all metalcore and are more experimental. That’s the heavy stuff I like and I like the more ‘experimental’ songs from Oh Sleeper the most.
Like your list Michael. The problem is that Major/Minor should be on the top :D

I realize this is super late, but I had a hard time truly deciding how everything should be ordered. If something is on the list, it is because I didn’t have the time to listen to it.
