Cornerstone Rumors

By Brandon J. on July-3-2011 | Filed under News | Tags : , | Share

Well since I personally couldn’t attend the festival I have been relying on my keen eye and social networks to fill in the blanks at just went down during the days of the festival. From what little I read this is what I gathered:
Norma Jean played a surprise set
The Thieves Guild (Reese roper and Josh Dies) played a surprise set
Venia played an awesome cover set of classic hardcore tunes
Thirtyseven was/did play a classic poppunk cover set
Blood and Water played an acoustic cover set of mostly foo fighters songs on raging storm stage
Gasoline Heart gets set cut short and supposedly gets kicked from cornerstone for using foul language on stage
Sleeping Giant and Gungor lead a worship night
Blindside and P.O.D play to packed main stage crowds
I heard about the typical cheesy Christian vendors
What else? My Epic ruled? Facedown Night was a success. Anything else I am leaving out? Remember, this isn’t everything that happened at this huge festival just some of the surprises that I caught on to through social networks. Post your experiences below and look for a full write up from one of our staff soon.

All I have to say is: The Undecided, Calibretto 13, Huntingtons, Squad Five-O, Ghoti Hook, Noggin Toboggan, The Echoing Green, Five Iron Frenzy and Living Sacrifice. I don’t think I missed out on this year.

I heard via Saviour Machine’s facebook that someone was selling bootlegs of some demos from their as-of-yet incomplete and unreleased album “Legends III:II” and calling them official copies.

  4. Norma Jean was a surprise. Didn’t know anything about Thieves Guild so I’m really bummed if that’s true. However I do have some sweet Five Iron news that is worth its own news post once I get back to a computer. Also we interviewed Deas Vail which should be up later this week along with some sort of general festival writeup. Another big thing.. There were rumors that the festival is severely in debt and in danger of not continuing and at least one staff member confirmed from a stage that they are “out of money” and that Cornerstone 2012 will look very “different”……

I think it was pretty pathetic for throwing Gasoline Heart out for saying the F word. If anyone truly got offended they could just have left, no reason to cut their entire set short.

To clear everything, he didn’t get kicked off for that. He cursed on stage, so they told him they were going to cut his set from 50 mins to 35 mins. He didn’t like that so he said the sound guy can suck it. That’s why the kicked him off.
But there was a large amount of people that still wanted to see him play, so he did acoustic songs right outside the stage he was playing on. A member of security was right next to him for a couple of songs when he performed another song that had the f-word in it. The security guard said he had to stop playing, and he didn’t agree with that. It escalated to the point the security tried to physically take the guitar away. Everyone stayed civil, so the conflict was resolved peacefully. He then apologized to everyone and said he shouldn’t have cursed in that environment, both on stage and in front of everyone. Gabriel Kelly and someone else I don’t know ended up playing with him as well. Really fun time. They played for about 40 mins after he got kicked off stage.

Can’t believe this. In 2003, Jessie from ZAO said everything imaginable and they continued playing. I thought then that they should be pulled so I wonder why they’re doing it now? Good job Cornerstone.

I don’t think Zao has played Cornerstone since then, so they were probably never invited back.

    • Joel says:

I didn’t know that Seth. Thanks for keying me in on that.

    • Patton says:

Zao has played Cornerstone since 03. They haven’t been in 2 or 3 years, although they’ve said they want to play the festival.

It’s funny how Gasoline Heart says the F-bomb and gets thrown out but David Bazan/Pedro the Lion plays and swears from stage and it’s alright. Squad Five-O played the main stage and censored their songs. Jesse Smith did have his rant in 03… A sad double standard.

    • iskelly87 says:

I wouldn’t say this is a double standard. I would say different situations handled by different people in different ways. Each stage is ran by a different crew. If the guys running a stage feels the need to shutdown a show they will and in this case the show was shutdown.

    • Lucas says:

Since it’s a Christian festival it’s got to put the people running the show in an awkward position.. I mean considering the audience.

The official @cstn tweet made it sound like they played together. They didn’t, they just both played around the same time and played worshipful stuff in their own genres. I saw parts of both sets though and they were both good.

here is a video I found of the baptism at the Sleeping Giant set – was amazing

  12. As brother and Sister in Christ, why not talk to, or counsel or, even love on them after their set if any thing was offensive, instead of act in a non loving way. I know they didn’t crucify him, but still…my 2 cents.

I was only there on saturday and main stage was not packed. It is now moved to the food court area, kinda sad. The main merch tent was sloowwww. It’s now over half full with orgs, clothing/jewelry vendors, there was a skin care company doing the mall kiosk type deal (ridic). I remember in 01-03 it was packed with people and band merch. I do like the fest but turnout has seemed to decline the last 5+ years. I heard from a fest organizer that this was Icthus Fest’s last year, they’re done.

As far as GH, i love Lou. Love his music. But he always pushes the envelope, it’s his thing. I’m surprised he’s played there so long (10-12 years). Back in like ’02 on T&N day, they played that night. Between songs he was amping up T&N about how good they were, etc. Then said “this next song is dedicated to them, it’s called ‘All the Whores’” and went right into that song. Was a favorite moment. That was like 8 yrs ago.But it’s because he’s like a fixture, he’s known them all so long. management has worked with c-stone for a long time, so yeah.
