Nine Lashes Sign to Tooth & Nail, Release First Single

In all the excitement for Blessed by a Broken Heart, you might have missed news of another Tooth & Nail signing, the band Nine Lashes. We actually announced it earlier in the year, was confirmed in a newsletter by the label in April then kept quiet for a few months. Well it’s official. You can listen to the band’s debut single right here “Anthem of the Lonely” and then buy it when it goes on sale at digital retailers July 12th through Tooth & Nail Records. Read the press release below.

Seattle, Wash. ..June 27, 2011…Tooth & Nail Records proudly announces the signing of rockers Nine Lashes to their acclaimed roster. Nine Lashes’ debut Rock single will go for adds at radio on July 1st and will be available on iTunes July 12th. Their full-length label debut (co-produced by Aaron Sprinkle and Trevor McNevan) will release in early 2012.

“It is so crazy to know that we are signed to Tooth & Nail Records,” shares lead vocalist Jeremy Dunn. “Since I was a teenager, I’ve dreamed of playing music for a living. It is surreal to look back and see us come from nothing to this – God is truly impressive.”

Eventually Nine Lashes was discovered and brought to Tooth & Nail Records by label mate Trevor McNevan of Thousand Foot Krutch, who also helped co-write many of the songs and some guest vocals.

“It is amazing to be on the Tooth & Nail Records label. I remember when we started the band, Tooth & Nail Records was ‘the label,’ and we would talk about someday being on the roster,” states guitarist Adam Jefferson. “Now that dream has become a reality.”

Nine Lashes’ different personalities and musical tastes are a creative melting pot that produces a hybrid sound that will take the listener from rock, to screaming guest vocals from Demon Hunter’s Ryan Clark (“Our Darkest Day”) to moving melodies. Their differences were once viewed as an obstacle to writing music, but they soon realized that working together and embracing these variances created just the right sound and combination for the album.

“We just began writing what we felt, and the diversity within our band translated itself right onto the record,” states Dunn.

The debut radio single “Anthem of the Lonely” is a band self-description about taking a stand for your beliefs even if that means that you are standing alone.

“When we were writing this song, I saw this story of a person going through this change. Their life is being transformed but there is still this doubt and looking back, having to let go of the old things – that whole process,” Dunn shares about writing the single.

About Nine Lashes:
The band’s name is derived from the whip used to beat Jesus – cat of nine tails. They state Isaiah 53:5 as their reminder that the wounds Jesus suffered was for our restoration, and the name Nine Lashes reminds the band of those wounds. Um, what happened to old fashioned band pics without all these special effects? Look at all the new T&N band pics, some of them are rather interesting ;)

      BBABH was my favorite! Hahaha

My thoughts exactly! do they really need helicopters flying in the background? haha… I still think this band is talented musically and lyrically they’re pretty good, it’s just hard to sound unique in the “grundge with minor screaming/hard rock” genre.

  2. David M says:

Oddly enough, I don’t mind the music that much. I thought I’d hate it, but it’s better than some of their signings lately. I don’t think I’d buy an album, but I wouldn’t walk away if they were getting onstage.

That’s weird, the last time I heard them their lead singer had a lisp. Oh well, the single isn’t bad, but then I’m an easy sucker for heavy-yet-melodic. Then again, Aaron Sprinkle and Teerawk are involved, so maybe it won’t be all bad. I was more psyched to find out that BBABH got signed to T&N. (Shows what happens when you don’t keep up for a day.)

I like it. Kinda has a TFK vibe, but their own sound. Not bad. Like David M said, may not buy the album, but definitely worth a listen.

I’m always apprehensive when Trevor McNevan is credited for “discovering” or is associated with a band. The Letter Black, Hawk Nelson, and Manafest are not that amazing…

    • silentthunder89 says:

A difference in opinions I suppose. I really like The Letter Black (although I’ve followed them since their Breaking the Silence days) and Manafest, but I don’t much like Hawk Nelson. Not that they’re bad, pop punk just isn’t my thing. Although, they’re pretty big in the market in their own respect.

    • Austin says:

The Letter Black can put on one amazing live show, they just didn’t come out with the same sound once they got signed. If you go back and listen to their independent release, you may notice a few differences that made them more unique and (dare I say it) “Fresh.”

    • silentthunder89 says:

I think the Letter Black is coming around though. I saw them at Ichthus Festival a couple weeks ago and they had a really heavy sound (heavier than what the album let on IMO). She has an excellent scream, something I would LOVE if she did more. Heck, they even played a cover of Dream On by Aerosmith with some added screams. Another cool thing they did is while she was getting a wardrobe malfunction fixed (not like Super Bowl though), the band broke out a nice hardcore/metal-ish sounding groove that was pretty tight!

    • Sam says:

I’ll grant TLB, but Hawk Nelson isn’t that bad and Manafest is pretty cool (the songs I’ve heard anyway).

  9. evan144 says:

Yeaaaaa, this band sucks, sorry to be so blunt! I mean just when I thought Tooth and Nail was starting to get some potential, they signed them!

    Reply

    • Sam says:

Perhaps you would be so kind as to explain why you think they suck, and thus make your comment constructive rather than immature.

    • evan144 says:

HAHA sorry Sam! I feel that bands like this are annoying. I should not have said anything because it just is my opinion, but this “radio rock” sound is just bleh. There is no depth to the music, it has been done literally 10 million times before, and whenever I hear this style, I instantly get the dude from Nickelback stuck in my head!

Sorry to be a negative nancy, I just feel that Tooth and Nail, if they REALLY want to expand and become the label they once were, need to quit signing mediocre bands like this band, Icon for Hire, Family Force 5, I am Empire, Rocky Loves Emily… and so on.

They need to focus on what made them stand out… mewithoutYou, Sainthood Reps (I am very optimistic about them), Copeland, As Cities Burn, Dead Poetic, Far-Less, Further Seems Forever, The Juliana Theory, Pedro the Lion( !!! ), Showbread, Spoken, Sullivan, Terminal, and Watashi WA.

I mean, am I wrong in my thinking?!?! Arena Rock is fine and dandy if you are into that music, but Tooth and Nail should just form a side label or something called like Radio and Arena or something, so that Tooth and Nail can grow back into what they once were!

    • linds4lif says:

haha i love your comment about radio/arena rock it’s exactly how I feel about it! It’s so overdone and just well boring to me.

    • evan144 says:

Agreed, I mean to each his own, and who am I too say it sucks (sorry, my comments before were TOO harsh) but I find this style of music to all sound exactly the same with a bunch of boring “riff” chords, predictable song structure, and unoriginal song ideas.

That is just me, a ton of people probably feel the same about the music I like (which ranges from Copeland to The Chariot to Wes Montgomery, look him up, to Glassjaw to Vanna, and so on haha)

  10. David Green says:

Amen Sam! Haha, evan’s comment is ridiculous. I actually like this band quite a bit. I ALMOST bought their independent album because I loved the songs “Words of Red” and “Word of Advice,” but I hate the hassle of buying independent music without a credit card =P but I think this band has potential, and I still love the VAST majority of Tooth & Nail bands right now, unlike most people that comment on this site. I am going to buy Run Kid Run’s new album and Blessed by a Broken Heart’s debut if it is mature, and probably this band’s debut if it sounds as good as this initial single (which I think is pretty solid). Also, I am very intrigued by Sainthood Reps. I’m psyched for Icon For Hire’s debut as well; “Make a Move” is phenomenal.

    • evan144 says:

To be fair, I still listen to many of the bands on Tooth and Nail still, just not the “arena/radio rock” bands, which is like almost half now!

    • David Green says:

Yeah, I understand your opinion completely. I wasn’t discrediting it, simply saying that the way you stated it was a little over the top. This band doesn’t “suck.” They aren’t really that bad. I actually like bands like this (like Since October), but I understand their sound has been beat to death. I just so happen to enjoy it still. I also like bands like Sent By Ravens and Write This Down a lot, but I wouldn’t define them as arena rock. And I disagree, half of Tooth and Nail is not arena rock, unless your definition of that genre is a lot different than mine.

    • evan144 says:

See your point. I like Sent By Ravens a lot too. Everyone has their own taste in music.

What I was saying, btw I said ALMOST half, was this, and I am relying more on the “radio” portion:

Hawk Nelson (not arena rock, but wayyyy radio)
      Icon For Hire
      The Letter Black
      Nine Lashes
Project 86 (actually like this band though… this is how “arena” rock should be done… inspiring even though they fall into their old ways much of the time)
      Since October
      Thousand Foot Krunch
Write This Down (I would consider them “arena” type, although much different, they attract that “scene” and have much of the same chord structures)

Meanwhile, the bands I feel really stand out on T&N are outnumbered:
      Sainthood Reps
      Queens Club
      mewithoutYou
      Emery

(the other bands I would consider aren’t really “on” T&N anymore even though they have them in their active roster… Copeland, Mae, And Then There Were None, MxPx…)

So I guess the “arena” rock isn’t really taking over T&N, so I was wrong, my bad!

    • scott says:

Agree with Evan. Whats so bad about saying someone “Sucks”? Hahahaha I mean, come on! Do our feelings get hurt THAT easily? Its almost comical how offended some of you guys got…

  11. Tyler H says:

i expected more “oh noes tooth and nail is going downhill” comments from people who dont like arena rock. it is what it is, we’ll see if its any good when the album gets here

as far as the band pictures…they might be silly…but what do you expect, the same thing as the 90′s punk bands did?

    I don’t think these guys stink…
However, I will have to agree that this sounds VERY much like a Red song…almost too similar. Not that its bad, I still enjoyed it. I guess I just wasn’t hearing the “creative melting pot that produces a hybrid sound”. Maybe their other songs will be more diverse? They seem like a pretty solid band. And I wish Tooth&Nail would start signing bands that have different sounds than just this sound (Icon for Hire, to me, sounds very similar to this too…and they were recently signed this year).

I hope we can win u over with the rest of the album.
We write music we like personally and we all like different stuff and feel like the album is very diverse. So don’t burn us to the ground yet! Maybe you’ll like the other songs on the album.
Hope to see ya at a show.

  17. I’ll be buying this. This song has a Breaking Benjamin/ Since October feel to it.

I first came to this site back in the day to find bands that sounded like the secular artists that I liked back then. I felt that supporting bands that don’t live out a God-like lifestyle was wrong, and I came to IVM looking for new bands to replace the one’s I’d hear on the radio. Now I strictly support only those bands that I know are using their talents for God’s glory and placing a positive stamp on their scene. Now this is just my preference, but I encourage others to think about doing the same.

I would much rather support Nine Lashes than support a Nickleback or Breaking Benjamin with my money.

Really innovative music is great, but most people (Look at record sales) just like to rock out. The music is what it is, and there is an audience for it. It doesn’t mean the band sucks if you’re not part of their audience. A band doesn’t really suck unless they’re doing things wrong musically when they shouldn’t be, or aren’t trying to for some reason. Being negative when it’s not called for is what sucks :/

On a different note, people don’t need to worry about them sounding like Red. It’s normal. When Red first appeared they were basically Evanescence with a male vocalist. Shoot, Breathe Into Me was a rip off of Bring Me to Life, blatantly lifting the line “breathe into me and make me real” for the song title and copying other lyrics, too. No need to be surprised that there’s nothing new under the sun, ha. Just enjoy it anyway, or let and encourage other people to enjoy it.

FYI, I rarely listen to this kind of music, but it sounds good for what it is and I dig that heavy guitar tone.

Gosh, I’ve had this stuck in my head for like the past week. That’s the sign for me that means it’s not just good, it’s great. In my opinion, of course. And Nine Lashes, if you don’t mind me asking (and if you ever actually revisit this discussion), is this one of your favorite songs on your upcoming major label debut, or do you personally think there are better songs?

    • David Green says:

Oh, and I also wanted to ask if there will be rerecordings of any old songs of yours’ on the upcoming album? I personally love “Words of Red” and “Word of Advice,” and I was psyched that both of them made it onto the Christian rock radio airplay charts. Hopefully this does well too!
