Does anybody know what this band is like? I haven’t really been able to find anything in decent quality by them. I’m excited to hear what they sound like.

    • Indie for sure… a heavier indie. If that makes sense.

I think you can download their latest song on the new Tooth & Nail sampler being given away for free via the Tooth & Nail Facebook page.

Based on a song and a half (one called “Condor” that I found on YouTube and a demo clip of “Hotfoot” on their Myspace and FB pages), they seem to have kind of a indie/hard rock sound – really ambient and experimental in some places, more hard-edged in others. I would hazard Edison Glass as a style-mate, but I haven’t heard enough of either band to be sure. Somebody on YouTube compared “Condor” to Brand New, but that’s another band I haven’t heard.

This is from a year ago, and they have improved their sound, but this is a lot of what you will get on Monoculture… just advanced!

Considering Derrick is in Brand New… he would inevitably bring some Brand New influence to the table! They have a really weird kinda heavy indie feel to them. Definitely a band to watch if you are into this genre. I have a feeling they are gonna be the next big thing… in my book!

    • Sam says:

I generally prefer more straightforward rock, but this isn’t half bad. I might check out their album when it comes out.

For sure man… when I finally expanding my horizons to the vast land of the Indie realm, my mind and ears were blown. I remember I got chills all over my body when I first hard a Copeland song. Lydia’s Illuminate was the album that got me into this scene though… well no, it was before the, like back in 2003 with Brand New’s “Deja Entendu” or The Early Novemember’s “The Room’s Too Cold.”

    • Justin says:

Sam, by straightforward rock, do you mean rock n’ roll or modern rock? Or do you mean hard rock like Pillar or Skillet?

I love Brand New. They use fuzz rock, punk/alternative, and post-grunge. Pure awesomeness. I prefer the grungier dirtier sound, for sure.

    • Sam says:

Come to think of it, my idea of “straightforward rock” could be considered punk, in the sense of barrel-ahead pump-up rock-with-no-frills. That said, I’m definitely not a punk and I don’t mind some musical substance within those confines (I think of bands like The Classic Crime, TFK, and Project 86, as well as some more radio-friendly artists like Red, Fireflight, and now Icon For Hire and Nine Lashes.) I guess I just like music that has some weight to it and doesn’t waste time with cute tricks.

“Monoculture” is an intriguing song… I can’t really form an opinion about the band yet. It’s enjoyable, but I wish the vocals were a bit easier to understand. The style seems pretty unique to me, though, and I like it.
