Adam Young creating new music

Adam Young (aka Owl City) has created yet another music project, this time called Sky Sailing. Do you think it’s different enough from his main project to consider it different? Full explanation from Adam can be found here.

Hello.

The music of Sky Sailing is a library of memoirs, a historical account of a guy who has done a lot of living, a lot of sustaining, a lot of traveling. He has made a great deal of mistakes and miscalculations over the course of time, but he embraces each new day for what it is: a chance to be better, a chance to forgive and be forgiven, a chance to appreciate and treasure the beauty that lies all around. This beauty is not out of reach, it’s right above your head.

Having traveled the world over, been privileged to catch sight of the most breathtaking and awe-inspiring vistas imaginable, Sky Sailing is the work of an artist with an endless amount of questions, a vast array of hopes and desires. Yet underneath is merely a man more content and thankful for the time he’s been given than his words could ever begin to describe. Perhaps his music can suffice.

This is his story.

Hey guess what… I heard Adam Young has taken over Never Shout Never, Romance on a Rocketship, Breathe Carolina, Breathe Electric AND Blue Apology!

Crap scene takeover anyone! HAHA jk! But seriously his genre is so freaking unoriginal! let him make another copy side project to make money off of while the GREAT bands in good genres struggle but still stay true to themselves!

Haha… Being that this is a a democracy, if the majority speaks with their dollars and cents, then I guess your “great” bands are the crap bands, and this “crap” is great. It’s a bummer, but if other people like it, then it’s selfish to say that it’s garbage…. And selfishness is anti-Christian. Food for thought.

    • Evan says:

True, and I know I am judging, and I do like fireflies, but I cannot stand unoriginality (which are all of these bands).

But I agree with what you have to say!

    • I Dreamt Of Polar Bears says:

Who defines “unoriginality”? Cause if you can name one person who can do what Adam does better than that artist definitely needs to get his music out there. You can’t compare Owl City with Breathe Electric, Breathe Carolina, Romance On A Rocketship, or any of those artists you listed. He pretty much has created what he does and I’d say he’s perfected it as well. Just my thoughts.

It’s different enough, the only way I could tell it was Adam Young was from the voice. Wasn’t sure about it when I saw the new project, but I liked that first demo. I’ll be checking out the record when it comes out in July.

I dont like Owl City but surprisingly I like this stuff. Vox are very similar, but I like the feel of everything together.

I haven’t listened yet, but his explanation of the concept behind the music leads me to believe that this will appeal to a more mature audience than Adam’s previous project. Not that singing about toys having a dance party under your bed in the middle of the night isn’t mature, but I think this will force listeners to think about what they’re singing along with more than Owl City did. +1 to Adam for making the myspace and facebook crowd engage their brains.

You know, funny thing: before Fireflies was released as a single and Owl City got huge, most of the scene people I knew that heard his stuff liked it. Now, it seems to be about a 50/50 split of either loving it or hating it.

While I respect the whole difference in opinion thing (without it, we wouldn’t have any good music), I have to wonder how many of these people who now hate Owl CIty’s music hate it because they heard it and genuinely don’t like it. I suspect there are a lot of people who heard it and don’t WANT to like it because he’s well-known and on the radio now. Also, there are probably a lot of people who heard that another scene dude that they respect doesn’t like it, so in turn they don’t want to like it anymore.

    Just a couple of thoughts.

Either way, the lyrical approach on this new project seems to be more serious, I’m really curious where he’s gonna go with all this, seems to be a cool idea.

I knew of owl city before Fireflies came out and I remain a fan. His live show isnt the best though. also he has a few other projects like Port Blue, Windsor Airlift, Dolphin Park, Insect Airport, and Seagull Orchestra. I think he is planning one more band with Matt Theissen in the near future.

    • Sam says:

Yeah, I heard his live show used to be pretty boring. Saw him in January with Deas Vail and Lights though and he was pretty good, guess he made some changes.

I still do not own the OWL CITY album “Ocean Eyes”. I keep picking it up and holding it in my hands at Best Buy/Target, but I always put it back. I don’t know why that is exactly. That “Fireflies” song gets stuck in my head though. Didn’t Adam Young have another side project called Swiming With Dolphins or something?

    • Shawn H says:

Yeah…Swimming with Dolphins was another of his side projects

    • XWriting on the WallsX says:

Just download it. The guy is a major success with a side project that will in all certify be a pretty popular project as well. It’s fine to download music from a thriving artist. Doing it this way lets you have the music in 5 min and not have to wait anymore.

  13. sue wheat says:

Brandon, just get it. I did the same thing and in the end was glad.

  14. TylerM says:

He has 4 side projects. Not kidding.

  15. Sam says:

Just found out, this actually isn’t a side project, it’s a collection of recordings he made when he first started making music. It’s kind of like and “Adam Young Rarities” record.

The dude is barely a few years into his professional career and already his discography is confusing.

He writes so much music, it’s crazy. Prolific songwriter. Reminds me of Shane Gould of Quick and the Dead/Advantage/Threats/Mendelson/Audiomonster. That guy too, writes an insane amount of music each year.

Port Blue, Windsor Airlift, Insect Airport and Seagull Orchestra are fantastic.
They’re like less sugary versions of Owl City. Sky Sailing looks like its going to be awesome too.

I think of Adam’s work as like a family, with Owl City being the cute kid that gets noticed and becomes famous, while his older, even more talented siblings are just being discovered now by a handful of people.

Did you guys not catch the part that these are all songs he wrote 3 and half years ago before Owl City even existed? I mean sure, it’s a lot like Owl City, but that’s what makes it even better. The song Brielle is one of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard. Purely incredible.
