Tooth and Nail Documentary Coming

According to this post here and a twitter update here, someone is going to be releasing a documentary on Tooth & Nail Records. I have no word on who is behind the documentary or where it’ll be released. Shall be very interesting.

Oh man, I can’t wait to see this thing! Should be super interesting, assuming it’s done well. Plus, in doing this project, the director automatically had a killer set of songs to choose his or her soundtrack from. Seriously… so many good tunes. I’ll be eager to see which ones get included.

    Old-school Supertones FTW.

This is awesome!! It will definitely be interesting to see which bands they talk about. I’d love to see interviews with members of Juliana Theory Ghoti Hook, Slick Shoes & Project 86.

If I have the extra money I’ll pick this up.

How about some friendly bets/speculation of which bands will be on the DVD. Just for fun…

I think they’ll talk to both of the Martin brothers. Probably Plankeye members. Underoath. Aaron Sprinkle. Emery. MxPx. Anberlin? Juliana Theory?

    Those are my thoughts

Whoa now i’m even more excited about this. I guess it’s officially a Tooth & Nail release. I hope they interview some long dead bands. I can get the singer of Value Pac if T&N needs his info.

  9. Eric says:

Yeah dude… the Martin Bros are in the two longest-running bands on the T&N roster. If they’re not mentioned, it would be an outrage. MxPx and the OC Supertones are also early bands that stuck around for a long time, building the popularity of the label as some of it’s most known artists. These four must be there. Aaron Sprinkle basically produces all their records, and he’s been in three of their bands, so he’s also a given. Underoath and Hawk Nelson are their biggest bands now, with Anberlin close behind. Hopefully they talk to someone from Wish for Eden. I mean, you’ve gotta get props for having the label’s first record release.

  10. Brandon says:

Yeah talk about classics and get a spotlight on “Spirit Filled Hardcore” and it’s early beginnings on the label.

Anberlin is the most popular T&N band in all their history as a label. Followed by MXPX and Underoath.

in what universe is anberlin more popular than underoath? record sales say differently. i love anberlin, i’m wearing an anberlin shirt right now, but facts are facts

    • JoshIVM says:

Agreed, although you’d have to factor that it is possible that more people illegally downloaded Anberlin. I’d also take into account many overseas tours all over the globe, etc.

    • bobbythebuff says:

Well if we’re mentioning over seas tours: Underoath, from what I have seen, has been to Australia, East Asia, Brazil, Chile, Russia, Columbia, Argentina, and probably a ton of different European Countries. Plus, since they go to Europe pretty much every year I’m sure that boosts their popularity over there.

I am not too familiar with Anberlin’s over seas touring experience so I can’t comment on them. I am aware though that they were in Brazil last month.

  13. schlottermann says:

I have a feeling the Supertones could hold up against Anberlin as well.

  14. Brandon says:

I hope they answer the sales question although I think they probably won’t. I would love to have sales figures on their top selling albums and a history of how many have sold. I tried asking Mr. Ebel that question in an interview but he skipped over it.

      ironic screenname

    • JoshIVM says:

If you trust Wikipedia (in this case it’s fairly accurate), it states that prior to New Surrender, Anberlin sold 400,000 records. Underoath was certified gold with both TOCS & DTGL (shipping over 500k). I think that makes it pretty clear.

    • bobbythebuff says:

Is the shipping with TOCS & DTGL just including The US? or is it Global? Cause if it’s not global then there is no telling how many records UO has sold over seas

  16. matt_b86 says:

Wasn’t MxPx’s Slowly Going the Way of the Buffalo certified Gold as well???

  17. eric says:

slowly, was basically licensed to a&m, for a cut price

Let’s be honest, Tooth&Nail Records rarely lives up to expectations these days. Gone are the glory days where every band they signed was a pure music delight. Today they just sign cheap imitations of what is popular. They are, in general, a disappointment. On paper this documentary could be brilliant. One of the best labels telling us about themselves. But let’s face it, it’s going to disappoint. That’s the general trend. It will not live up to the hype we’ve just created! Unfortunately.

My screen name is ironic? Thanks.. Couldn’t think of anything better..
Maybe UO sold more albums, but as you said, more illegal downloads may take place for Anberlin, more radio play and also promotion. They are over all more popular. This may be a exaggeration, but saying that uo is bigger than anberlin It is almost saying that Underoath is more bigger than Switchfoot. Maybe your right, but anberlin does get radio play and bands that get that, such as Owl City, usually are pretty big.

    Reply

    • JoshIVM says:

Promotion doesn’t equal popularity. Illegal downloads is a hypothetical argument since it cannot be proven (though a possibility). While Anberlin does get more radio play, it really isn’t a valid argument since they are radio friendly and Underoath isn’t as much.

You can still think Anberlin is more popular if you’d like but that’s neglecting all the facts which counter that.

  20. tyler h says:

why would people randomly download anberlin illegally more than underoath? underoath fans have more money than anberlin fans? anberlin’s music makes fans prone to steal? c’mon, really?

anberlin gets alternative radio play…and a lot of it…but thats nothing compared to getting top 40 radio play…underoath defines an entire genre, thats tough to beat

also…some people should not use the word “ironic”…because they just don’t know what it means.

  21. Kevin L. says:

Really? From just people I talk to way more of them have heard of Underoath, whether they like them or not, than Anberlin. Think of all those Warped Tours, etc. Moreover, counting illegal downloads it shaky, since its just as likely kids are pirating UO as well.

Moreover, Anberlin isn’t on T&N anymore, so technically, any attention they’ve received from New Surrender on wouldn’t count.

I would hope that they do interview a lot of the older bands that helped make the label interesting and stay alive when so many other alternative Christian labels died after just a couple years (Boot to Head, Bulletproof, Flying Tart, Bettie Rocket, etc). It would also be cool if they interviewed some other people from the industry (Frank Tate, maybe?), so we can hear their thoughts about how T&N managed to survive or have influenced/impacted.

It would be interesting to hear some detail about the big clash with MxPx from the late 90′s, but I’m sure they won’t let it happen…

Bands/People I would also LOVE to see in the doc:
    -MxPx
-Stavesacre (the first T&N band made up completely of people from former T&N bands; based on Mark’s book Simplicity, he’d have a cool perspective and some cool stories at least)
    -Bill Power
    -Scott Silletta
    -Mike Knott
    -Jeff Suffering
-The one really artsy/proto-emo looking dude from their staff that used to be in the background of all their old T&N VHS tapes :D
-Actually anyone on their old staff. I remember reading the booklet from the 4-Year Anniversary set and they had some interesting stories about moving from CA to WA, etc. Although I love hearing form the bands, the doc would be a unique opportunity to hear form the people behind-the-scenes.

I’m already frustrated because you all have some good ideas, but there’s no way they can do all this, unless the doc is 3 hours (pay Reese Roper to do it?).

    Have a good Friday, ya’ll!

    -Kevin

I have some friends who are not Christians but listen to underoath while only some of them know of anberlin. I think FF5 should also fit somewhere on here for their release of Dance or Die which was a mainstream hit. Really get some of the old stuff though like mxpx.

Though it would make the DVD quite lengthy, I’d like to see at least short interviews with a member of each band they’ve had sharing some memories or whatever. Then longer interviews for the bigger bands.

  24. XWriting on the WallsX says:

Didn’t know Anberlin left T&N. I don’t see any evidence that weighs against anberlin being less popular than Underoath besides the fact that they at one point sold less albums. Yes, UO has gone on warped tours but Anberlin has gone on those too (Vans Warped Tour 2010) and big tours just like uo. In the hardcore scene uo of course would be more popular, but that doesn’t mean they are overall. Even if anberlin is played on alternative stations and are not in the top 40 that’s still more than uo gets, especially now. Whatever. I know i started it but i don’t see a point in debating about it anymore. Really is irrelevant which band is more popular.

Seriously, not one person has mentioned one of the greatest T&N bands ever. Roadside Monument. Not only amazing records, but their live shows were just something to behold. But yeah, it would be really cool to see this. I’ve listened to everything T&N put out since day one and even though they really have gone down hill in the past, I’m really glad that they are still around, putting out music.

T&N is paying for and producing this doc themselves. Don’t expect anything other than a propaganda piece featuring the artists they want to hype. Don’t expect to hear about the times they nearly went out of business. Don’t expect to hear about the lawsuits. Don’t expect to hear about the death threats. In short, don’t expect to hear about anything other than what T&N wants you to hear.

If someone in charge at T&N reads this, I challenge you to interview the bands you dropped, the ones who aren’t Christians any longer, the ones who might have something critical to say.

In a completely different direction than most of these comments are going, i would like to pose this question…why is T&N going so far over to the side of just “entertainment”. Correct me if im wrong but in the 90′s it seemed like their bands had more of a purpose, and a god-centered intention behind their songs… Now we got more and more bands that seem to just get your foot tapping, not that there is anything wrong with christians just merely singing about life and stuff. BUT does it seem like too many record labels are candy-coating the fact that they are christians simply for album sales? I want to make a buck just like the next guy… but i think there may be a bigger purpose and influence alot of these newer bands are just straight up not taking advantage of… whats your guys thoughts????

I know other bands that got dropped or sued. Value Pac was one. Craig’s Brother got dropped for various reasons. The Agony Scene were dropped. Stuff went down but why do we have to be all negative and bring out the bad when there was quite a bit of “good” done by the label. Like it or not, this label left a mark on our little scene for years and years to come. I am sure there are bad stories out there floating around and people that have been hurt by the label or other Christians in general. Some people have become jaded by it all and may have lost their faith along the way. All I can say is that we need to pray for them and if we are ever to come in contact with one of these people, show them that not all Christians are wacky. Anyway, I want this documentary regardless of what light it casts the label in.
