Listened earlier. Won’t be buying it. Some of the songs had glimmers of hope in them but overall, the album is meh.
how are the extra songs? im just not super sold on this release, any thoughts anybody?
I can’t wait to pick this up on Tuesday. Sounds awesome!!
From what I have heard this is a solid release but not an epic release like The Infinite Order was.
Yeah I’m picking this one up too. I think for what they do, they do well. For me atleast.
Interesting responses from you guys. I listened through that about three times already and I have to admit, this is wow. This is a much better release than I thought it would be, and certainly my favourite out of DH’s five lp’s. The hype surrounding it was worth it. This is faster, heavier, tighter, and yet more musical, and more enjoyable than any of their other albums. It is difficult for me to swallow what Steve said.
I have listened about 3 times as well and I am liking it more each time. I do have to say that the it is tighter than some of their previous albums. Heavier???? I dont know about that. I like that they are melodic but I wish they would do a few more songs with no clean vocals and go brutal. It does seem to me that they have the fire in the belly again.
I may still be a little jaded that Solid State only gave me a 4 song teaser stream to use for a review instead of the full album stream. And all of the four songs were already on MySpace. LAME!!!!
This album IS good, but it’s not great. I really like a handful of the songs though. “Descending upon us” is a good opener with some awesome guitars. The title track is a really good “heavy” song, and “driving nails” is very ballad-ish but I don’t think it quite tops my throat is an open grave or heartstrings come undone. Again this is my opinion. It still rocks. I can’t wait to read the rest of the lyrics, my physical cd should come in tomorrow.
Can’t wait for this album to show up in my mailbox!
I’m so stoked for this album. I’m feelin’ it more then their last album.
This sounds like Demon Hunter performing a yet-to-be-released album or collection of b-sides and unreleased songs by Project 86. Other music this album reminded me of was Living Sacrifice’s “Conceived in Fire” and Dead Poetic’s “Vices”.
Both Living Sacrifice and Demon Hunter made the wrong choices for their first singles. I think “Rules of Engagement” is one of the best songs ever but I think it needs a lot of spins to realize its greatness and I think it suffers when heard in lower-quality streams and videos. Better choice: “They Were One”. For Demon Hunter, an album so masculine will sometimes have a few less heavy songs and I think “Collapsing” feels a little My Chemical Romance and kind of whiny. It’s my least favorite song on the album though the synths bring me back to the mainstream rock scene of 1999 like Bush. Better choice: “Just Breathe”.
There’s a good amount of orchestration on the album, the guitars feel very droning and ominous which creates a thick atmosphere. The dark, pervasive intensity is best exemplified in the unbridled anger of “Shallow Water” (the vocals are very strong on this song) and “Just Breathe”. There is a cohesion of the theme of counter-culture martyrdom and the increase in aggression, and that synthesis is consistent throughout the album. If you were wondering if this was a different Demon Hunter album, you would only have to hear “Breathe”, “Shallow Water” and “Feel As Though You Could” back-to-back-to-back. On a typical Demon Hunter album, there would be at least one song that was more melodic than heavy but on this album the last song “Blood In The Tears” is the only song that doesn’t have a side of heaviness. I heard the explanation of “Blood In The Tears” and didn’t understand it theologically. Get out your lighters for this one and, yes, there is auto-tune.
When you rate an album that is streaming on myspace, you have to remember that you will likely add about 2 points because of how much better it will sound on CD or MP3.
Good review. Well-written indeed.
i got flee the seen for 1 penny
