Setting the Record Straight About Paramore and Other Reader Habits

I need to set the record straight about something. As many of you are aware, I removed a post over the weekend that was just a simple news bullet about a Paramore video. It caused a firestorm of comments on the site, many of which were offensive to Hayley and myself. The fact that people still have to bring “Sex” into a discussion on Haley and her band is beyond my scope of understanding. Please read more for full blog.

To hear young people bring up her photos and start accusing the band of “selling out” or sexing up their (her) image is just plain ridiculous. Paramore is just a rock band that happens to have a female singer. They don’t claim to be the saviors of the universe, they’re just here to rock out, give us a good time, hopefully share a little bit about their struggles, the human condition, and where their love comes from. I hate when I have to delete a post but I do it to save us all the embarrassment. Apparently someone shared our post with Hayley and she read up on the comments. I don’t know her opinion but I am sure it led to a little disappointment. You guys have to understand what the world at large thinks when they come to IndieVisionMusic.com and read our comments. You’re representing not only our website but also yourself as a “Christian” living in this world. If people really want to learn about Jesus, they aren’t getting that sentiment from reading a bunch of accusations and spoken ill will coming from our users. I’m not pointing any fingers at certain individuals, I think if you said something offensive, you know who you are. It’s okay to question but to slam the personal lives of members in popular bands is unreal. I’ve been one to accuse bands as well and there are still some artists we don’t cover here because of profane matter but that’s another discussion for another day. This is a message to Haley and the rest of Paramore, the sentiment expressed in comments under our posts is not necessarily the overall opinion of Indie Vision Music and our staff. We can’t control comments and I rarely delete any of them so if something comes across as offensive, I apologize. In the future, if any of our readers comes across something that is “offensive” on our website, I would like to be the first to know about it. You can all email me here anytime during the day brandon[at]indievisionmusic.com and I’ll answer whenever I get a free moment.

A lot of our readers and supporters here at IVM are “Christians” and I just want to encourage those of you of Faith to express a little more self discipline when it comes to spouting your mouth off in the comments. P.S. It’s not the end of the world if member(s) of popular “Christian” bands have a drink or two after a show or in their off hours. If you’re over 21 (in the U.S.), then it’s legal and as long as you aren’t “abusing” alcohol, I see no problem with it. I get so tired of hearing other Christians, especially young kids, slam their favorite bands or burn their cds in some ritual because they find out a band member had a drink or two. SXE is great and all but it too can become your religion after a while. I think everything should be taken in moderation whether it be SXE, or drinking, or dare I say smoking. Smoking is a nasty habit and it’s one I personally have stayed away from my entire life because I can’t stand the smell of it, however, this doesn’t mean a band member who does it is all of a sudden and magically, not a “Christian” any longer. There are some common misconceptions here in the conservative Christian country of the USA and I think it’s leading a lot of people away from Faith and from a relationship with God. I am just tired of all the accusations and personal attacks on some of our most beloved artists. This is what turns people away from God when they see fellow Christians who can’t even put up with one another in the simplest fashions. Christ didn’t die on that cross so we could all sit around attacking each other for “slipping up”.

I also get tired of reading people quote Bible scripture to suit their own needs. We all come from different view points and we could all throw Bible scriptures around till we’re blue in the face to justify our uneasiness with a particular subject, no matter what side of the fence we’re sitting on. This is another reason why some of these comments on our website get out of hand fast, because each of us is coming from a different situation and it leads to some dissension among us. Whether it be emotional, physical, mental, or spiritual, each of us is in a different place than the guy sitting next to you. We are all uniquely individual people with diverse opinions on the world and how we conduct ourselves in it. I just want to plead with you to please show respect and careful restraint when speaking to one another here at IVM. Like I said above, I HATE to delete posts and censor this site but sometimes I am left with no choice.

The standards of IVM: We are careful in our choosing of artists to feature and write about here on IVM. There is no precise “selection process” for choosing bands to cover and not to cover, it’s all based upon our instincts for who feel the crowds want to hear about. I usually cover music from any artist living the “Christian” life regardless of their opinions on politics, and such. Though I am somewhat of a moderate conservative, I show no ill will towards anyone who disagrees with my standpoints and personal opinions on life. We can all agree to disagree and vice versa. I may not agree with the personal politics of every band we cover here at IVM, I respectfully choose to cover them because we all share a common bond of Faith in Jesus Christ and knowledge of his unconditional love for our lives. Not every member of every band we cover here is a “Christian” but usually the songwriters are and/or singer. We’re a bit independent in terms of our coverage and who we choose to feature here. I don’t operate on anyone else’s terms and/or standards set by other sites. I choose to cover whoever the heck I feel like covering and it’s my hope that you’ll all trust my judgment (as well as our staff’s judgment). The only hidden agenda of IVM that I would like to share is my overall desire to see people led to freedom through Christ and recognize his love for our lives. His love for us is unconditional and because of it, we have hope to see another day. Hope is something I want to share because personally in our current society, hope is not something openly shared. It’s quite dreary everyday when you flip on the news or read a headline, it’s enough to make some people end their lives prematurely. With hope, there is a reason to persevere and the desire to see another day through. If the salvation of Christ on the cross was all a joke or some “fairy tale” then there is literally no hope, no conscience, no morals, no boundaries, and no unconditional love. Without “Christians” in this world, there would be little charity and relief organizations, less hospitals, and a whole lot of angry people. We can get into this whole debate on the beginnings of “morals” and it’s place in our world but I think I’ll save that for another day. This is getting lengthy. Basically our standards are this, “Faith and Entertainment With and Independent Perspective”. Meaning we cover everything within the scope of “Faith and Entertainment” but with an independent focus that sets us a part from other like minded media sources.

I want to thank each of you for your unending support of Indie Vision Music and everything I try to accomplish with this site. It’s because of you and my love for music that I carry this site on each and every day. Will I be doing this when I’m 40? I guess if I still have something important to say at that age and a breath left within me to speak out, then I’ll definitely still be pushing and promoting independent music on into the future. I rely on staff to keep me updated on what’s happening in the music scene when I’m too busy to check it out on my own. I’ll never get bored of music and the passion I have for sharing the love of Christ with an unbelieving world, will never die out no matter what curve balls are thrown my way.

This is quite possibly the longest blog post I’ve ever written on this site so thank you for reading and for your support. God bless each of you and may his love carry you through to see a new day.

In Him,
Brandon Jones

I’m not trying to be a part of the problem when it comes to throwing Bible verses around, but in essence, I think this verse can apply to the situation. If we, as Christians, walk without love and are quick to condemn (note: I’m not using judge; those are two separate words, but that’s a separate topic), what good are our words? I know I’ve been one to say some crappy stuff here and there, but I agree: when it comes to the bands being written about on here, there is a difference between expressing your distaste in the music and then just finding fault in their character. Not to pull up the ever-so-often used “casting stones” analogy, but it’s true. You claim they’re not walking a Christian life, yet here you are, condemning them in a way that is nothing short of un-Christlike.

I’ve been coming to this site for years and it’s hard to keep coming back, not going to lie. I mean, Brandon, I appreciate everything you do, because I know where your heart is, and it’s for the Lord. And to the staffers, it’s been awesome working with you when I have and seeing some awesome bands come to light. HOWEVER. To the people who come here, leaving comments? If you want to slander and say something you truly have no idea what you’re talking about, go to Lambgoat. There’s plenty of that going on. What good is it to sit behind a computer screen and spout off the hottest rumor you heard or talk about how someone isn’t loving God the way they should just because they like the taste of beer or, God-forbid, got really into the moment on stage and swore? What is edifying in this? Where is the love for the body [of Christ]? There is none.

I challenge anyone who posts here: re-read everything you say before you post it. Like I mentioned earlier, it’s one thing to express your distaste in a band (as long as it’s constructive). But there is never a need to attack someone’s character, especially anonymously. If you have an issue with something they are doing, I can guarantee every band mentioned on this site has a way for you to contact them. As Christians, we are called to exhort and help others in their walks, but not in a public, disrespectful manner, and ESPECIALLY when it’s not out of love.

Brandon, I didn’t mean for this to be this long, and I’m sure you didn’t mean for YOUR post to be as long as it is. I just didn’t even realize any of this happened this weekend and I think it’s sad. As a musician, I could care less if someone doesn’t like our music. We play it for the Lord and let Him do with it what He needs done. But if I saw someone attacking me personally for something that, chances are, they had no clue about…yeah, I’d be a little upset/hurt to wonder why someone would even WANT to do that.

Christian or not Christian, let’s focus on loving others. Let’s stop the hate and the gossip and just enjoy music, for Pete’s sake. It’s not that hard.

Good post, Brandon. I didn’t read any of the comments you mentioned, but they seem to be rather superficial and petty.

Not to be “that guy” that brings scripture into something, but (as far as I know), the only people that supposed to be held in a higher standard are teachers/masters, James 3:1. Setting musicians up to be more of an example for the sole reason that they are more popular seems rather unscriptural to me.

Exactly. Didn’t even think of that verse, but it’s true, because a lot of these people in bands, while they have a heart for God, aren’t trained theologians or anything along those lines. Not saying you HAVE to have a formal education to be a teacher, but I mean, I just became a Christian last year. There’s still a lot of times where I mess up and can’t even imagine if I was in Paramore’s position. Good point, Jay, thanks.

Ps: my comment got lost in the spam filter, but I put a verse in my comment, as well.

Great post! Really long, but i read every word of it because it captured my attention, unlike most long posts. I would, however, like to say that it’s no wonder so many comments were being posted about Hayley. Paramore is a big band and people will search Google, and IVM pops up. It brings in allot of new people and non Christians leaving comments. If she read it like you said (not that I’m sure how you could know if she did) I’m sure she was aware just because its a Christan site doesn’t mean no none Christans will ever visit it and leave dumb comments, which they have the right to do. Christian sites representing their faith on the internet is hard and somewhat unrealistic because people can say whatever they want if there’s a comment box.

Oh yeah, I was following that comment thread. I didn’t see it get really bad though, but I didn’t read it for a couple of days. The potential was definately there because the first comment was practically an accusation aimed at Hailey.

I can only imagine what someone thinks about Christ when they check out something like that on IVM and the first thing they see are attacks on something that in all honesty wasn’t a big deal at all. Since we’re Christs representatives, if we’re being petty and accusatory then to the lost’s eyes that reflects what Christ must be like.

Thanks for writing this Brandon, it needed to be said.

  11. Hopefully people who read on IVM realize that not everyone that posts here is a Christian either. Anyone with access to the internet can post here and they can do so in a derogatory way. Of course that’s not to say there’s some massive conspiracy theory here as some posters here get out of hand but you know what I mean, haha. If I weren’t a Christian and came here I would look at what the staff says as being more representative of the site than readers since the staff are technically ‘employed’ by the site and should uphold the site’s values that Brandon described. Readers aren’t as expected to do so.

That being said, well said Brandon and I agree. :-D

    A couple of thoughts/questions:

    1. I was a very bad Christian when I was the age of Paramore’s members so I have no room to talk.

    2. I don’t know why anyone would look to Switchfoot, P.O.D., Paramore, Lifehouse or any other ‘band of Christians’ who doesn’t like the term “Christian band”, for spiritual meat, Biblical lyrics, preaching live or anything other than entertainment and artistry. I am a little surprised that they are covered on this site, just like John Reuben, with both artists using God’s name in vain. That said, I have zero expectations for any band that doesn’t want to be called Christian. They can be salt and light in a different way than the ministries of Sleeping Giant or Demon Hunter. What’s difficult about evaluating the lyrics and actions of Christian celebrities is that we don’t know them close enough to admonish them or to even be sure they are Christians. Paramore’s accessibility to their fans is nice, with a livejournal page where you see everything from a quote of Spurgeon’s to tour stories to remarkable respect and humility to Hayley foregoing turning the other cheek when Bravo magazine made fun of her skin.

    3. I find it highly ironic that their video featuring cuddling got a conversation going when the “Brick By Boring Brick” video/last album cover had Satanic/Illuminati/mind control references. I don’t believe they endorse those things (like Satanic Lady GaGa) and I doubt they really comprehend them but it was a pretty interesting video. http://pseudoccultmedia.blogspot.com/2009/11/paramores-monarch-internal-world.html

    4. I think it’s difficult because even though I don’t believe I’ve engaged in anything un-Christianlike on here, it’s hard to discern poor theology/choices and even expound on good theology without alienating people who aren’t Christian. Christians are not commanding to judge the lost, only other Christians and even that has its parameters. Two things all Christians, not just missionaries, are commanded to do are preach the gospel and love. I was struck by some of the words of the people in my favorite band, Living Sacrifice, along with the Showdown and Paramore. Bruce has made it clear many times in interviews, that other than their faith, they are just normal guys. I don’t view this as a grab for acceptance but rather a tearing down of myths about Christian metal bands. They want people to rock first, and maybe discover something more in the music or in discussion later. I read a tweet David Bunton of the Showdown wrote about Donald Miller saying “i love all his books. who knew christians could be normal. hahah.” Josh from Paramore said this: Josh: We are Christian, but we

I thought this was a really good sharing-of-thoughts, so thanks Brandon. And yes, I would agree that something many of us in the Christian community (especially in the younger generations) need to face is the temptations of pessimism and cynicism. I’m not saying that people shouldn’t stand up for what they believe is right, but when we do we are faced with the choice to do so in a way that can be constructive or destructive. The danger is that the Church become a place where we’ve eaten each other alive as opposed to becoming a source of nourishment for each other and our neighbors.

(I was considering making a connection between this and the recent work of Mr.Derek Webb, but I don’t want to start controversy over something as nice as this.)

To Chris, I never said I’d delete a post because of scriptural inaccuracies it’s more done because the comments become profane, insulting, and otherwise ridiculous. Some people insist on beating you over the head with bible scripture to make you somehow feel less inferior and I don’t agree with that. Not all of us are Thelogians (myself included) so when people have to justify their nasty comments by throwing a scripture in my face or another person’s face, it just falls on deaf ears. Brandon THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!
After years of doing interviews I’ve gone through the whole disappointment phase with artists. People (I don’t care if they’re famous or not) are never who you want them to be. It’s as simple as that. I let people down all the time. Thankfully for me I don’t have news posts written about me so no one can highlight how much I suck at life and at being a Christian.

I’ve also recently realized how lousy I am at loving. Have you ever thought about it? We love our friends because we get something from them, be it a good time, common interests, having to not feel alone whatever. But the people I don’t always get a long with? Gosh… I’m usually good as externalizing “love” and “pretending” to love them outwardly, but internally they might annoy the heck out of me. Why can’t I love like God does?? Why is it taking me SO LONG to figure out something so simple like love? To love people no matter what their actions or words, no matter what friends they have or what their theology is. Why can’t any of us figure out how to LOVE like God loves us????

I have so much respect for Paramore and other Christians in the mainstream. They’ve dealt with a lot of flack. I will never be mad at anyone for wanting to have nothing to do with the Christian market be it Mute Math or Paramore or who ever. I wouldn’t want to put up with all the pettiness of everything either if I were in their position. So again Thank you Brandon for interceding!

The sad thing about us being Human is that everything we do is in our own interests. We might not think that way conciously but it is true if you take time to think about everything. Wether it’s the good feeling we get for helping someone or the feeling of love and acceptance we get from hanging with our friends. It is all for our own benefit. We as Humans are selfish by nature. Every single person on this earth is selfish. Like I said it is mostly unconcious for most people, but it is true. Then there are people that are outwardly selfish and those people are easy to spot.

And it is really true about meeting people you have admired from afar…they usually end up disappointing you.

Actually, Baphomet, the goat figure who appears in two Lady Gaga videos and who she seems to be emulating with an outfit of hers, is famously used in Aleister Crowley’s Thelema religion, as a pawn of Satan. This popular religion said that there was no devil and that Satan is basically God for helping people “know thyself”. Crowley was a popular English Occultist and magician in the late 19th Century, early 20th Century.

Tiger Woods and Charles Barkley are great examples of how it’s unfair to criticize them as “bad role models” because their sex and alcohol-related failings will not be the only information young fans will get on these subjects. However, teens who look up to Lady GaGa likely don’t have much of a reason not become interested in Satanism, but have a really fun, cool celebrity who is giving them lots of reason to become interested.

Good post there Brandon. A lot of people jump to conclusions that is for sure. And it’s true we shouldn’t bag on someone for slipping up. But what we should do is hold those people accountable for their actions and help them realize they might be heading down the wrong path. I don’t remember the verse in the Bible but it has to do with us as Christians holding each other accountable for our actions. In other words we should be saying “Hey I see you did (insert bad thing here) and I know you aren’t perfect and neither am I but lets help each other avoid those mistakes in the future.” I hope that made sense. I havn’t seen a picture of Haley from Paramore recently but if she is dressing all scantaly clad then perhaps she needs an accountability partner or something. I think we all need someone in our lives to help us stay the course and we in turn can help them do the same. It shouldn’t be about bashing each others bad habits or whatever, it should be about helping each other realize our mistakes and help each other to keep from going down those dark paths. Anyway I hope this all makes sense.

Let’s just Brandon’s post ruled and made a lot of sense and leave Paramore out of this discussion. Isn’t that what forums are for?

  52. Brandon, your right on man, and although unfortunately there are some believers that take things too seriously, and take them to the extreme, there are still believers who appreciate what christians like you do, and thats bring us news on our favorite bands! as for paramore, i do like a few songs not all of them, but them as people are awesome. And i as a believer am happy to have a band like them in the mainstream secular world repersent the love of jesus!
Keep up the good work IVM your a blessing!
