It’s the Same Old Thing

So it appears some of the nominees for the Dove Awards have been announced and the same old bands are being nominated. Yep, it looks as though Jars of Clay and Skillet are up for 6 nominations each, alongside Toby Mac and Casting Crowns (plus a few other nominees I don’t feel like posting about). It is cool that Needtobreathe are also nominated, so I’ll give the academy some credit there. Other than that, it feels like a repeat of prior years. Oh and Thousand Foot Krutch were nominated for a “Best Rock Album” award as well so that’s neat. Don’t you just get tired of these awards shows? I mean the Grammys sucked, the MTV Video Music Awards suck, and I don’t know much about the Gospel Music Channel Awards because I don’t have that channel but was it any better? These academies need to start listening to the people and not to other outside major label influence. Well, what else is new? I hope you’re all having a splendid day. Let’s talk music. P.S. If anyone has the complete listing of nominees, please post it in the comments or give us a link to a reputable site with the list.

Apparently The Killers, I mean Abandon, got nominated for Rock Album of the Year. I need to get a hold a list for the rest of the nominees.

Brandon, I say IVM does an Indie/Alt/HC/Metal award show to counter the Dove Awards. We could have some polls up and give away some cheap trophies

I wish we could do a Reader’s Awards but I wouldn’t even know how to begin that here. There are some free survey sites out there that let you customize forms, maybe that would work? Does anyone have a link to a free survey form I can use to do a reader’s choice thing? I’ll do it if it’s simple enough. I can’t promise any trophies though ;) ha ha.

They are listening to the people….the people that are brainwashed into liking generic and uncreative music.

surveymonkey.com only allows 100 responses for the free plan and there is no way I am paying $20 a month to keep it. I did find another option though in SurveyPirate.com. We’ll use that one.

I’ve been looking all over for that list! You’re right though…it’s the same old groups….which is fine… if they were any good. The good stuff almost always gets missed…even my 55 year old mom doesn’t like the AC stuff.

I’m not going to insult any of the nominees’ music, but congrats to them. Maybe more independent music award shows will happen for the rock & metal artists in Christian music. If Christian hip hop can have their own awards, God willing, there has to someday be one for rock/metal

I feel like the Dove Awards have become a bit of a joke. An exaltation of a self serving industry. At this point, I couldn’t care less about what they have to say.

Though it’s great that Mikeschair has 4 nominations. They’re a great bunch of guys doing it for the right reasons.

Also, it’s ridiculous that Lecrae hasn’t been nominated. That dude is ruling right away.

if these people were in charge of the grammys, barbara streisand and barry manilow would win every year. relevancy fail.

Hate to say that Dove Awards are a little different than the Grammy’s in the fact that anyone can vote (anyone who is a GMA member which anyone can become one). Read up on the process of how voting works here:

    http://www.doveawardsvoting.com/process.cfm

This means that if every Sons of God fan became a member and nominated them for the flawless EP, then they could top Casting Crowns. This has been done before:

I’m not going to say that the same people are not nominated time and time again, but that’s because you and I are not voting, it’s “Becky”:

Well my wife would be considered a “Becky” and we have three kids now. However, she like myself, find great discomfort in ccm music (for the most part) and really want nothing to do with the contemporary Christian music market. I’ve always been a fringe music listener with dissatisfaction with how the contemporary market sells itself. That’s one of the reasons I got into concert promotions back in high school almost 15 years ago. It is also one of the deciding factors I had for starting indie vision music 10 years ago. The gospel music association is largely out of touch with the youth of America and especially those not living in Tennessee (no offense to anyone living there). I got so sick of being force fed some of this garbage most of my life that I wanted to venture out on my own and truly impact the community fir change. I think we are capable of doing our own part to better the music scene at large and it’s my hope that little ole IVM would inspire young adults to do something entirely unique with the tools God blessed them with. Myself and others reading this site are not content sitting on our butts drooling out the mouth and being spoon fed the same junk over and over again each year. I’ve been around the block, seen a lot of things (and heard) that quite frankly irritate me. No one stands up and no one speaks their mind for fear of ruffling feathers that might cause others to say “you are a bad Christian witness” blah blah blah. I’m firm enough in my faith that I don’t let it affect me anymore and I could care less about burning bridges. My income doesn’t revolve around the “industy” and I’m self sufficient enough that I can do things my own way. I’ve been invited by industry people for years to attend gma week but I politely refuse each and every time for the past ten years. I feel that God has given me the ability to write and put my thoughts to the keyboard, and this is how I’ll spend the time I have here on earth. My heart aches for the world to learn about Jesus and I’m going to do my best speaking of his good word through my passion for music. If IVM has any hidden agenda, it’s that I desire more passion for the youth to seek Jesus in everything they do. I’m sorry if this sounded harsh towards anyone that works in the industry but it’s just how I feel. -Brandon Jones

UGH THE CCM SCENE NEEDS TO DIE! It all sounds the same very few Christian bands these days standout and if they do 75% of them sell out there faith.

  20. I think the categories are pretty messed up. How fair is it that Switchfoot has a song in best Rock and Best Rock/Contemporary song and Pillar has more in common with Skillet, Red, & TFK than David Crowder band & Barlowgirl yet ends up in a categories with the latter instead of best rock album with the others. It seems like they’re just trying to fill the gaps OR their definitions are too loose.

it just goes to show you that the dove awards are driven by their own little interest groups just like everything else. there is absolutely no reason whatsoever that some of these “artists” should be nominated year after year and time and time again.
