Toby Mac Interview – Questions Needed

Heyyy guys,

Toby will be calling in about two weeks. As you know, he’s an artist who has been interviewed by everyone multiple times. So I’m sure he’s already heard every question in the book.

Send me some questions that you’d like to hear answered – and that are unique!

He’s going on tour with Skillet and I’ll be providing a show review of the concert as well. His latest record, Tonight, just released.

Post below – thanks!

It’s funny that, when I was at the Stronger Than Hell Tour, how I thought about how if it was 2000, it might have been Living Sacrifice, Embodyment, Beloved and Training For Utopia. If it were 2000 for the Alive Tonight tour, then you’d be seeing Skillet doing a lot of songs from Invincible and dc Talk playing a lot of songs from Supernatural. People will prefer the old and people will prefer the new. The bigger problem for me is, the Christian punk/metal/hip hop artists never tour together. The closest recently has been Project 86 with Children 18:3 and The Wedding. Of course, I only kinda like Team Schwab and only really like Children 18:3 but that was close.

Since I discovered them, Our Corpse Destroyed, The Rekoning, Children 18:3, A Plea For Purging, Shai Linne, Andy Hunter, Huntingtons, eleventyseven and August Burns Red have not toured together and those are my favorite artists in all of music along with Kid Liberty, Rush, and La Roux. I have some ideas for super tours.

  2. Razgriz says:

    Really, tyler h?
Don’t you think he’s had enough dc talk questions?
I’d ask him if he’s gonna come to the West Coast – Seattle, WA! YEEEAAAH!!
Seriously, though, I’d ask him why he doesn’t have any of those funky interludes on his new album – like Flight 92, Fresher than a Night at the W, and Quiet Storm.

that was kind of the point.

  4. which one is more gangsta?
why is every show the same, and why do say the same thing at every show?
when is the remix of the remix cd coming out?
do you ask people if you look like Justin Timberlake?
do you have dc talk cook outs and talk the good ole days?
if the Gaither Vocal band asked you to be the new lead singer, would you?
    have you consider auto-tuning?
how many greatest hit albums is to much?
what year were you not nominated for a Dove award?

    That was fun.

  11. Aaron C. says:

    Here are a couple:

    1) In his view what is the state of Christian hip-hop right now?
    2) Looking at Gotee Records right now, is it still a hip-hop/R&B Label or is he looking to sign more acts like HoH and I Am Terrified to make the label more diverse?
    3) What is the difference between this album and his past ones?
    4) What do you look for in a performer or band before you sign them?
    5) If you were offered more of a chance to reach out to a mainstream audience, would you?
    6) How do you feel about the label of Christian band or artist? Do you like it or does it matter? Do you feel it pigeon holes you as an artist?
    7) Run DMC or The Beastie Boys?
    8) What bands are you currently listening to? (I’m always curious about this)
    9) What 2010 release are you most excited about?
    10) Is there anyone you would like to tour with that you haven’t got a chance to yet?
    11) What advice did you give Grits when they started their own label?
    12) Do you feel like the Christian music industry is painted with a negative light? And if so, do you feel that is a fair light to paint the industry in?
    13) How does it feel to have your music more widely accepted by the Christian faith now, unlike DC Talk was in the beginning?
    14) What collaboration would you like to do next? I think KJ may have you beat on that now.
    15) What artist or band do you see as the future of Christian music right now? Who will carry the flag next?

  17. tyler h says:

    what supposedly happened?

    • Jordan says:

yeah for real? you can’t just drop hints like that and incite terrible speculation. Do tell.

    • sue wheat says:

haha. I am thinking of how to type this out and I can’t help but giggle. Well supposedly, they played at l.u. one evening and was staying at a hotel near by, and had a little too much to drink and they sneaked back onto campus after curfew and where caught by l.u police and where not allowed to play anymore… I want to know if this did or did not happend…or did something happen that wasn’t that? What is really going on with the “L.U.” story?

  18. Drum beats, electric guitars, and loud vocals were all apart of their performance, a big NO NO.

Ask him why $25 per person in West Lafayette, IN for Skillet, House/Heroes, & him? Let him know the venue never gave a date for group tix and they were sold out of group tix the day tix went on sale. SUCKS!!!!! Sorry can’t spend $100 to take fam.

    Reply

    • Jordan says:

$25 per ticket? that seems about right for three national touring acts. Unless this is before “convenience” charges.

I’m not really sure you have the right to be angry at these guys for trying to make a living. You have to remember the venue is going to be taking a huge chunk of that ticket price.

    • Phil Recognition says:

i’d pay 25 bucks just to see house of heroes, so good

  20. tyler h says:

they dont set ticket prices, the venue does. they charge a performance fee, which is probably high because tobymac and skillet are big names and have a lot of people to pay. if you want to see high ticket prices, try going to a jonas bros or u2 or bruce springstein concert or some other top seller…then youll be thankful for 25 bucks

    Reply

    • Dan says:

True story. I saw U2 a couple months and had to pay $75 for a ticket on craig’s list. The ticket was originally $50 but U2 tickets sell out very quickly. Anyway, totally worth it, the show was mind-blowing.

  21. Daniel H says:

From a wise man once, some questions for Toby Mac
and anyone in the music world:

“Are you willing to never play music again?

Are you willing to be nothing?
Are you willing to go anywhere and do anything for Christ?

Are you willing to stay right where you are and let the Lord do great things through you, though no one may seem to notice at all?”

    to conclude a final thought:

The Lord commands you, “Deny yourself take up your cross daily, and follow me” (Luke 9:23). My piano is not my cross, it is my tool. I’d never play it again if God would show me a more effective tool in my life for proclaiming His Gospel.[God gives us each our own unique tools. But we may never use them if we become more interested in someone else's. Seek God, ask Him for His plan for ministry (true, God glorifying ministry) in your life.]

  22. $25 isnt bad at all! I think the tix at the stops around me are $40. Most i’ve ever paid for a concert tix was $30 bucks like 2 years ago to see Switchfoot ha. And i’ve never spent that much since.

  23. He’s not doing state fairs yet? wow.

Definitely not worth $25, unless its a theme park show with LOTS of other bands.

Since Toby’s been really good about offering the fans new music between studio albums, does he have any thoughts about what to do for record 4.5 yet, or will that come in a few more months?

  25. I see him every year (unfortunately). Im a youth pastor, and its what the kiddies want. I try to intro the kids to good music, but sometimes ccm (crap) wins.

  26. Angry fan says:

Ok so I’m not so angry to sin, but I’ve gone to better shows with 4 or 5 bands on the tic and paid less than $20, or less than $15. The show is at Purdue, nuff said. It is the venue’s asking price and wonder if the bands knew about this? Not sure but was told Comatose shows were not as much. I would pay $25 to see this show if I were the only one going. Our youth group got in on opening sales date but group sales were sold out, and never promoted. I have a a 10 yr old & an 8 yr old that my wife & I were going to take, but not for $100.

  27. tyler h says:

well…kids are expensive…cant blame tobymac for that! hahahaha

    Reply

  28. sue wheat says:

Speaking of things that are expensive…why is most “Christian” items WAAAAAAAAAAY more expensive than other stuff, like glue, paint, hammers, paper, cell phone battery ($35 min), glasses, water, stuffed animals, dog food, movie tickets, paper plates, plastic cups, cd-r’s,(ok, so that stuff is really cheap but still) cds at non-Christian stores, Christian music at non-Christian stores and so on? What the Crap? I got two…2! t’shirts from a Christian store called C28 for my birthday, and the tags said 21.95 each!!! WHAT!!!!????

    Reply

  29. tyler h says:

have you never been to a mall? hot topic shirts are the same cost. larger retailers like walmart have cheaper clothes because a) they’re made from cheaper material and/or b) because they buy in bulk…they sell a lot more so they don’t have to make as much on each one…the same reason why you pay more for food from a convenience store than from a grocery store…its just business…c28 doesnt even make a profit (and they don’t need to, the owner is rich, he just wants to have the stores because they minister to people)…at best they break even.

i’ve never heard of “christian dog food”…so you lost me with all that.

  30. sue wheat says:

what’s a mall? …I won’t tell anyone you shop at hottopic… ijk. ok makes since. I think Christian “stuff” in general should be lower priced. They could buy in bulk as to not have such high prices. Thank God for bestbuy and the internet.

    Reply

  31. tyler h says:

why should Christian stuff be lower priced? Do you, as a Christian, offer everything that you do at a lower price? do you work for 3/4 of minimum wage? if it were at a lower price, they would lose money by the truckoad. they can’t buy in bulk because they can’t sell that much and they’d have inventory issues. its business stuff.

i go to hot topic to see if they have any christian band shirts or vinyls…in the last five years i’ve probably purchased 3 things…an underoath shirt, a paramore vinyl…and an anberlin shirt a few days ago…i’m 29, i don’t really care if someone on the internets thinks i’m lame for going to the mall…i think its lame that mall generally doesn’t like selling things to the big and tall. i’m glad i’m only an XL…if i were any bigger then it’d probably be impossible to find anything there.
