Normally I wouldn’t post something from Trent Reznor or Nine Inch Nails here, but today I think that Trent has some very valid and helpful advice for unsigned bands. Maybe his ideas aren’t for every band but the man has made a very successful career for someone who started as a janitor in a studio. Check out what he has to say here.

this is awesome.
Seems like stuff bands should already know. I guess there’s a lot that really don’t think these things through
quite solid indeed. lot of good stuff there.
Bands should know this, but few act like it.
we’ve learned it. hence why we joined Noisetrade. already on Noisetrade we’ve moved more copies than we have the cd’s we pressed. plus we get the bonus of getting the email addresses so we can build a mailing list to send out updates if we want to.
Noisetrade.com is an awesome service. I wish more bands would use it.
^And I’m sure they will, now that its free!
Most bands need to throw out the old way of doing things because the market has changed. This is really no different than any other type of business out there. The music industry had been quite stable for a long period of time and everyone got comfortable and were not prepared for a major change like the digital age. Instead of thinking outside the box and looking to the future, they tried to hold on to the past. The faster young bands realize this, the more productive they will be. Trent made some good basic points, but there are plenty more things that bands should really be doing on top of giving music away. That’s just a starting point.
