Josh definetly screams on every CD, most commonly seen on The Weak’s End. Until this CD, that is. He’s on this one alot. His scream has definetly changed alot, but he does plenty of highs on this CD. As for the CD’s before, he’s usually the backup screaming while Toby and Devin will be singing. Live, however, he does almost all of the screaming.

Josh Head did no screaming on Emery albums until I’m Only A Man. He is the low pitched scream you hear on the two most recent albums. Toby does the high pitched screaming.

tyler, you nailed it on the head buddy. this album is definately a 10/10. not one bad song on this album. i mean its not an album where you cna just pick one song to listen to, and not the rest. kinda like TCC’s “The Silver Chord” was. One thing worth asking, in your pic, is that a Packers foam finger??? LOL

yes, they changed the name, they switched up tracks 2 and 3, they made track 12 into track 12 and 13 (split one song into two) and made track 13 a B-side. the CD i got in the mail was WAY different than the download t&n sent me, but musically it is the same, just arranged slightly differently

Tooth And Nail is amazing record company, very nice people indeed. I pre ordered too. I agree with the intensity of screaming like you had mentioned. Based on what I have heard on their myspace, it sounds like the volume is softer and they used a lot of distortion. I liked the screaming better on the first and second CDs better. This new CD goes back to their original style, before “The Weaks End”, back to their own released “The Columbus EEP” using mainly inspirations from that for this new CD. The “I’m only a man” CD was different, but every band has to experiment with different styles to see what works best sometimes. But the past EP was to show more is coming, and this time, it’s better.

I’ve absolutely loved the 6 songs I’ve heard (Cutthroat, Curbside, Piggy Bank, Poor and Prevalent, 2 songs from While Broken Hearts Prevail).

It really seems to be more of everything they did well on each album (better screaming sections than Weak’s End, better melodies than The Question, and just all around better than I’m Only A Man- which I loved btw)

thanks for being honest. part of a community is that both sides get to be honest. i did not say that you are in general a covetous person, i did say that i felt your comments were in line with covetousness, which you can either disagree with or accept. we all have a choice to either be humble or proud.

as to your service vs. community comments…i really think it is both. if we did not post news, reviews, interviews, etc people would not come here no matter how much fun we have talking about music. if that weren’t the case, i am sure that our forums would be much, much more popular. both are reasons that ive been such an active participant around here for the last year and a half, as a commenter, writer and in the forums. we have had many healthy (and at times unhealthy) discussions over that time. some have made me a better person because people, like you, have shown me the error of my way, or in the very least shown me another side to an argument. it is because of this community that i wanted to get this review out asap. people in the forums were asking me what i thought about it and i wanted to be able to give them a response without making them wait. i had also noticed lately that some early reviews around here have receieved a lot of discussion (as cities burn for example) and i wanted the same for this. i wanted people around here to get excited about this album and discuss what they thought of the band, perhaps getting into what they liked or disliked about previous albums.

so, im sorry if you dont like a) early reviews b) me c) anything i’ve said in the last four days
im not trying to argue with you or anything (though i may be failing) i’m just trying to explain my side and maybe we can learn from each other

all I was trying to say was that, for me personally, the albums being reviewed ahead of time makes the site feel like less of a community and more of service. i liked the community feel, that is all. the comment section of an emery review was probably the wrong place to do that. my apologizes. for the record, i never said illegally downloading records was cool or should be condoned. I guess what i was really trying to say (and probably did not get across very clearly): i got the impression from ivm that downloading leaked records was worse than downloading records that are 10 years old. that doesn’t seem to be the case. thank you for clearing that up.

and i’m not going to lie, i am a little upset with the above comments. It really feels like you are saying i am just a covetous person who is all about getting what he wants. That is a bold implication to make and honestly does not make me feel all that welcome on ivm anymore, especially not to post my thoughts, whether they relate to music or to the site. With the perks of working for the music industry, i would think there is also the responsibility to be a little more gracious and courteous to your customer.

I’ve been following ivm DAILY since 05(ish). I have a huge amount of respect for the effort you, Brandon, have put into ivm. It really seems you’ve poured his heart into this site ever since i’ve been on it.

but yea…i actually got emery through my own site, http://www.christianmusizine.com but because IVM (i.e. brandon) has always been good to me I wrote a review here too (not to mention this site has way more readers and this is a really important album that deserved a good review). i’m pretty punk rock haha so when brandon said “DIY” that made me smile :) but yea, if you love music, start your own zine! its great! it can be a lot of work but if you have the spare time and have an opinion then it can be fun too!

Well they already said their fill so I won’t add much but that was a lopsided arguement. The stuff is given to IVM with a watermark (ie: it’s not the real recorded version because it has interruptions I believe) specifically to be reviewed. It’s not something that can be handed out to people as a replacement for the real thing either because of that watermark.

And I’m fully behind Brandon on the illegal downloads thing. I just don’t get how people can say that’s not stealing when you are getting something that’s supposed to be bought for free. If people feel a bad economy gives them a right to download illegally then I guess we all better start shoplifting food for the same reason…

Getting pre-release music is just part of the game of being involved in the music industry. Labels want good press for their releases and in order to do that, to gain that publicity, they need to supply magazines/webzines/blogs with early music. A lot of record companies aim to sell mass copies during release week and it’s tough to do that if there are no reviews to be found before hand. I’m an old school guy myself and I prefer cds but these labels have all pretty much switched over to digital downloads, which I guess I’ll settle for. I used to be a collector of everything T&N but since they switched over to digital, I haven’t gotten my “fill” of cds from them. So that means I go out and “Collect” their albums from Best Buy/Interpunk/etc.

I strongly oppose illegal downloading so sorry to upset you Brian but that’s my opinion. You wouldn’t walk into a grocery store and steal a carton of milk, saying “Well, I’ll try it out first and if I like the taste I’ll buy it later on”. Duh, that obviously doesn’t work and either does your argument. I still buy cds because I feel it’s important to support these struggling artists and I prefer hard copies of my music. I have also been buying stuff off of ITunes lately though I would rather have a cd to be honest. I know a lot of kids/people talk real big about buying the cd once they’ve test run it, and I know that’s a flawed argument as well. Alot of people get the free music and decide that during this terrible economy, it’d be much more worthwhile to save the spare change on a Burger and fries than on a CD that you already own digitally. Be honest, how many of you who download illegally really go out and buy EVERY album you download? You don’t. I know some people that download illegally that will never go to a band’s show, never buy a band’s merchandise, and never buy a cd. Tell me, how does that support the struggling musician? It doesn’t, bottom line.

If anyone wants pre-release music, start your own zine/blog/magazine. I encourage our readers to be independently minded and if you guys truly want to be DIY, just start your own webzine. Then when you get enough visitors, you can request this music yourself and get your own copies beforehand.

but your argument is a poor one, and ill tell you why. am i getting the album “free”? well, yes and no. yes because i didnt pay money for it (though in this case i did end up pre-ordering it because i wanted a hard copy and the vinyl). no because there is a good reason that people send us cd’s…this is essentially really cheap advertising. bands, labels, marketers, whoever WANT people to know about their stuff. its like this…if you go to a skateboarding competition, sometimes their will be people at booths who will give you stuff, like a tshirt or a red bull. just because they give you a red bull doesnt mean that i’m then allowed to steal red bull. you are trying to rationalize the situation to fit your needs. am i stoked when i get a great cd in the mail? absolutely. but do i ever go about getting a leaked version because it wasnt given to me? never. not once. and ive also had to suffer through some pretty horrid cd’s for review too, do you feel jealous then? sorry, sometimes life doesn’t seem fair, sometimes certain people get certain things that others dont. you know what its called when you want something that you cant have and are jealous of someone who does have it? its called covetousness. its in the ten commandments. and what do you think reviews are for? so that people know if they should buy a product, right? well, this product is available for pre-order and if it gets good early reviews then more people are likely to buy the preorder, so the company/label/band/whoever wins. thats just how it works. waiting an extra few weeks wont kill anyone. and really, in many ways its better to get it the same time as everyone else, cus then youre stoked about it the same time everyone else is. by the time june 2nd has rolled around who knows what ill be listening to? but i know who youll be listening to, emery, just like most smart people around here.

sorry if that rant seems a little rantish, im not trying to be hard on you or attack you personally or something just as you probably werent trying to personally attack me or the other ivm staff, i just feel that your arguments are invalid based on the reasons ive just given. thanks for reading, i hope you enjoy emery and ivm as much as i do.

never said what you were was against the law and i know that it was given to you guys by good ol’ t&n to review. I’m not really upset either, more complaining than anything. Mainly that i’ve read certain “ivm staffers ” say how much they think its horrible if a guy were to download a leaked album even if he goes out of his way to buy the album on the release date because of how it wrongs the band. and then they review music that is given to them for free well before the release date. a poorly constructed argument would say it’s a little bit of a double standard. My thoughts would be: if ivm’s stance is that downloading leaked albums (if you’re going to go buy the album) hurts the band and the effort they put into the cd, then they are they reviewing albums before they drop (regardless of how they got it) and not waiting like the rest of us chumps.

btw, i really enjoyed your emery review. i was on the fence about getting this album, but i’m picking it up for sure now. can’t argue with a 10/10.
