There are times when it take me about a minute into an album to come to the conclusion that I’m just not, or at least shouldn’t be, the target market for this stuff. There are also times when I start way too many reviews by starting it with “there are times”, but I’m not here to tell you about how lame I am, that’s your job. My job here is to tell you that Constant Recourse is a pop rock band that is simply going to reach a much younger audience. This isn’t just because the vocals are a bit cutesy and not likely to grab the awesome factor from an old man, but more importantly because the lyrics are simply simplistic and immature. That isn’t necessarily a bad thing, in fact these songs should be encouraging to the youth crowds, it is just that they aren’t incredibly deep, intricate or original. If they push themselves a bit harder to create art and not just a song, then I could see something fruitful coming, but as for now I’ve just heard a bit better.
If you like a band like Hazel & Vine or…I don’t know…a thousand other independent pop rock bands, then you might find this amusing. They do show some hints of decency along the lines of The Almost, but it just isn’t quite there.

While you’re certainly entitled to say what you will about how the music does (or does not) hit you, I don’t think that you’re giving the lyricism of the album much credit – or grace, for that matter. Lines like “God save us all, I can’t get by just on help – I need to be saved from myself,” “I cannot forget I convince myself of anything if I try hard enough,” “It’s not that you loved me too, but loved me first,” and “I’ve got a nightly amnesia, I forget where I come from” don’t seem “simply simplistic and immature.” I went to the band’s website (www.constantrecourse.com), and there’s a one line description of the band which (even though it comes from them) rings more true than your entire review: “dynamic and memorable rock music for people who care about lyrics.” I know it’s a bit hokey, but it makes sense. Whether that person be an annoying teeny bopper middle school girl or a Harvard professor, that one-line description seems to line up well.
I’ve listened to some of The Almost, and I don’t think that this band is anything like them, not that there’s a value judgment in that at all. I feel like this band is the kind of band that may not grab the Thrice fan or mewithoutyou junkie, but encourage the old man that needs some truth spoken into his life with uplifting and challenging lyrics that are meant to…well…uplift and challenge.
Finally, what do you mean by “art and not just a song”? If the song Less Bitter (not to mention Nightly Amnesia) isn’t artistic, I don’t know what is. And of course you’ve “heard better.” I could say that about any band/song, depending upon what I’m looking at (musicality, dynamic, hook, lyrics, etc.). In any case, I’m glad that you reviewed this group, because it made me give them a look-see, and I was pleasantly surprised by what I found.
I completely agree with Judge William on this one. Much like the man with the gavel, I only checked out this band because of this review. I too, was pleasantly surprised and proceeded to purchase not only this album, but their debut album as well. I have no idea where The Almost comparison came from, but these guys are far from that sound.
I think these guys are 100% worth checking out. Even if the lyrics were simple and immature (which they most certainly aren’t) the music itself is good to listen to. The lead guitar plays off the keyboards nicely as does the bass with the drums. Vocally, harmonies are tight and interesting to listen to. You will definitely not get bored listening to this music.
