Staff Blog, Jan. 9th: The Headless Horseman

Welcome to the new Indie Vision Music, ladies and gentlemen! We hope you like what you see. We’re extra proud of the new look, and we hope you’re fans as well.

As we work through this transition period, we’ve had a ton of new ideas for IVM, one of which is this articles section. Staff have occasionally written opinion pieces before, but this has been very infrequent. We think it’s a cool idea, so we’re going to be doing it a lot more (at least, Matt and I are). If you like this kind of discussion, I urge you to check out the forums and hang out with us. The more the merrier, right? We’re almost always talking about something awesome, like end of the year lists, stuff we’ve bought recently, whether the word “Matt” is a swear word, and for a limited time only, a heated discussion of John Mayer. Come hang with us; it’s probably better than whatever you’re supposed to be doing at work.

So to kick this off, I wanted to start with a quick discussion of music in general. This is for two reasons: first, so that everyone has something to say, as opposed to only fans of a certain band, and second, so that I can feel like I’ve earned my staff post and still have time to catch a Boston Legal episode or write a break-up song before my brother’s birthday party. Here is the question: What, according to you, is a wrong way to enjoy music? And why is this wrong?

We’re in the digital age, friends. There’s no stopping it. I know many of you don’t like this; you love to listen to CDs or, if you’re really cool, vinyls all day long. You wish everyone did the same instead of downloading a couple cuts from iTunes or, if they’re really cool, Amazon MP3. Why? When music fans say this, they don’t generally mean only that it’s more convenient or more practical for them to listen to CDs. They think there’s a good reason for everyone to. Why? I buy from eMusic and Amazon MP3 a lot…it’s cheap and easy, and I feel like I’m getting the same product you are. What’s the difference?

You’re not alone in how you feel. My dad is one of those accursed “singles listeners.” He downloads a track or two off of iTunes, or, if he buys a whole CD, only puts a couple songs on his iPod shuffle — he decided he didn’t need a full iPod because he doesn’t want to carry around most of his music. I think this is a wrong way to go about listening to music. Is it? Why? If he gets the same things out of his music that I get out of mine, what’s the difference?

There’s a battle currently going on in the scene between groups I will call the “elitists” and the “backward,” though neither term is fair to those particular people. The stereotype of the elitist talks about those who had Bon Iver as their album of the year … in 2007. They hype bands that were created only to sound weird, and they ridicule anything they didn’t come up with themselves to make everyone else look bad (i.e. “normal” music, “fun” music, “pop-punk” music, “Britney Spears” music, etc.). The stereotype of the backward, on the other hand, has no artistic credibility. He would pay money to hug someone in Good Charlotte. He listens to the radio and yells things like “F*** YES DUDE” at Hinder songs. Why is either person wrong in the way he enjoys music?

How do you look at music?

The Headless Horseman is a student of philosophy and theology at Wheaton College (IL). He is a staff writer for IVM, though he seems to apply more effort to the parts of that job that do not involve “writing.” He is currently listening to Jimmy Eat World’s Chase This Light and bears striking resemblance to Matt Damon. He is currently single.

you should spell it M*tt until the debate is settled ;)

I think the only wrong way to enjoy music is if its stolen music.

I also would have accepted “country” music as wrong, but my fiance would heavily disagree.

  • Brandon says:

Headless, you’re my hero!! Score for your little disclaimer at the bottom. I am laughing so hard I almost fell out of my chair. GOOD ONE!! haaaa

  • Tyler.H says:

utoh, that was a close lawsuit, brandon could have hurt his tailbone, sir.

  • fusse says:

I don’t look at music. I listen to it.

  • hahaha. The next disclaimer will say: “Except in the case of Brandon Jones, who can go sue himself.” ; )

  • linds4lif says:

Haha nice article, funny comments. I agree with you Tyler H. country music is *cough* crappy*cough*

  • Eric says:

I’ve never liked country, and I still can’t stand commercial radio style country (just like I can’t stand commercial radio style rock). But recently I’ve gotten to enjoy a lot of alt-country artists, or indie bands with a lot of country flavoring, like Dustin Kensrue, Gasoline Heart, The Snake The Cross The Crown, (new) Connor Oberst, The Lonely Hearts, (old) Derek Webb, etc. It’s really good stuff, probably most of my favorite artists even. So don’t rule out country altogether just because the mainstream is bad. If that’s your reasoning, you’d have to stop listening to any music at all!

  • The Mobile Horseman says:

I agree with the above comment.

  • John Wayne says:

See, Horseman, I told you you done write good. This is top notch! Matt Damon = hott… so what does that mean for you, haha.

I personally think it’s wrong to only listen to singles, but I guess if you look at it honestly, throughout the history of music a lot of people only know the hit songs by bands. It’s only recently that we’ve been able to extract only the songs we want for purchase.

Eric is a genius. New Conor Oberst!!! Gasoline Heart! The Lonely Hearts!

IVM should be updated to WP 2.7 so threaded comments can be had. I want to quote people!

  • fusse says:

We are using 2.7… ;) I think threads are really a matter of personal taste… I dislike them a lot (well, at least deeper than 2 levels) and some people like them a lot. Plus to add it to IVM right now would require quite a lot, it’s not just to enable it from the WP settings…

  • Tyler.H says:

eric, no love for the almighty tumbledown?

  • Brandon says:

Don’t forget Orion Walsh, Eric. He has written some great alt country music!

  • The Mobile Horseman says:

    @John Wayne: *bows*.

Oh, and I definitely agree about the threads thing…

And now, the singles thing…I feel really weird about that.

    @Fusse: …Deeper than 2 levels?

  • Eric says:

As far as singles go, I am one to prefer buying whole albums. I find it totally unnecessary to ever skip a song. I listen to the whole record or CD from start to finish, period. It was created as one solid piece of art, to be listened to as a collective whole. Or at least that’s true with the bands I love. I’m sure Kayne West or Britney Spears could care less, but if I’m popping in Circa Survive, I’m listening to the complete package.

On the other hand, music in the form of a whole album was only invented in the past 100 years. Before that, you had classical music, which was super long songs, or you had folk music, which was just the everyday people playing songs, not albums. So this whole argument is really only relevant if we’re talking about recorded music. Before there were recordings, there were only singles. Hmmmm.

  • fusse says:

yea okay i’ll look into the thread possibility with how things are now but can’t promise anything yet ;)

  • Brandon says:

what is “thread possibility”? I’m lost.

  • Tyler.H says:

i believe it means that we can quote each other, thats about it. i dont think its all that necessary

  • Brandon says:

Can’t people just copy/paste what they want to quote into a comment? Is it that hard?

    • Eric says:

No Brandon, copy and paste is out of the question. And in reference to your second question, the answer is “That’s what she said.”

  • John Wayne says:

I was actually supposed to be responding to the H with that “unnecessary” comment. Don’t know why it went under Fusse.

Anyway, I agree with ya Fusse. 2 levels was all I wanted. I hate it when they keep going and going. This seems like a nice implementation to me, but apparently those higher up think it’s easier to cut and paste!

    • Brandon says:

I’ll copy and paste you Mr. Holcomb!! Take that!! haaaa. Always the kidder aren’t I? This is cool, thanks Miika!

    • fusse says:

It went under as it was a reply to Tyler, but I had also replied to the same comment and therefore yours was listed under mine as it came later… Every comment with a light gray background is a reply to the comment above that has a white background…

headless horseman… did you used to be on the zboard?
